Expected goals
Re: Expected goals
Xg is only relevant to teams that try and walk it in like city and Brighton.

"Goals are overrated" was another one of his.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 10:48 amCase in point, Johnathan Wilson once said something in the way of "People use goals too much to judge how a game went"
But then his attitude towards football has always been "so how can I understand this popular pastime that you humans spend so much effort and emotion on?"
Michael Cox is another one who has entire laptops full of spreadsheets explaining football, but will never, ever, understand how it works.

Re: Expected goals
Had a discussion on the podcast today about why things perhaps went wrong last season and I think as a manager, VK allowed himself to fall into the trap of everything being about the data. I said last season that he'd taken away the emotional decision making from players so they were incapable of making the right decision when decisions needed making.Plissken wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 12:31 pm"Goals are overrated" was another one of his.

What was evident on Saturday - in pockets - was the players on the pitch making subtle positional decisions to try and come to the right answer. That didn't happen with VK last season because he micromanaged every phase of play and it became muscle memory. The problem was that the muscles we had weren't as developed as the muscles most of the rest of the league had.
Re: Expected goals
It was noticeable that there were far fewer set patterns of play on Saturday, especially on stuff like our own goal kicks. (I got tired of "Pass to the centre back on the right, to the right wing back who has dropped back, inside to Cullen, turn to the left centre back, look to go up the left wing." Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.)
Re: Expected goals
Indeed. A man who once said that "I don't think many people understand football as much as I do" and it took me a short while to realise that he was serious.quoonbeatz wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 12:47 pmIs cox the zonal marking guy? One of those who doesn’t deserve football.

Re: Expected goals
I’m not even trying to understand it. The reason? I don’t give a sh!t. It’s just, in my opinion, another load of pointless ******** that gives pundits the chance to look intelligent. The more I read about it the more I don’t see the idea behind it. Like possession stats, teams lose with 80% possession so what good has that possession done them? After the fact stats don’t change the result of a game. Expected goals don’t win games, actual goals do.
But what do I know?
But what do I know?

Re: Expected goals
As a person who has studied Maths (Pure) at Uni, this is like explaining to someone there are more than 3 dimensions or 4 if you include time. The extra dimensions around space mean nothing unless applied in Physics etc. I am with Leisure. 2 plus 2 equals 4 and Burnley hit the Onion Bag 5 times and Cardiff didn't. Final score Burnley 5 Cardiff 0.

Problem is Blue too many on here will have 2+2 equalling 5 if the truth doesn’t suit their agenda. I am definitely in the ‘what’s the point’ camp.
