Just a thought.
The £15 million fee being mentioned for O'Shea could be a relegation release clause.

I love watching Beyer at this level, absolute line breaker when fit. Appreciate that is the conundrum - when fit.
I really don't want to sell DOS - as good as it gets at this level and feel we go up with Steve and DOS.
I am resigned to losing Berge now there is interest from other parties outside Manure. £30m though, don't take less.
Trafford I really want to sell, as I think he's poor and will lose value and I don't was us to have to sell DOS. If he ends up staying, of course we get behind him. But the cross he missed at Luton was food and drink to a good keeper at this level.
I don't get excited by sales, or money in the bank (trust me this is not a problem, Burnley having loads of money in the bank), but I know the reality of running a business / servicing debt, I know enough about our finances that there has to be more outgoings, and that Berge and Trafford would cover it.
Final point, would of course love to keep Berge, but then again Ipswich would love DOS for £10m. But such is life of supporting a team relegated, we have to sell players, and unfortunately they tend to be the ones who can step up, by definition.
I think if it's just Trafford and Berge, and some odds and sods, we **** the league.

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Steady on, New. When the club was relegated in May 2022 James Tarkowski and Ben Mee were both out of contract. The club didn't sell either of them. Nick Pope, Dwight McNeil, Maxwel Cornet and Nathan Collins were sold. They all wanted to continue their careers in the Premier League. (Also, Wout Weghorst exited on loan as he needed to continue playing in a top division). Of course, the club had a new manager who wanted to develop a new style and the exits financed the incoming - and dealt with MSD debt obligations.NewClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 6:17 pmYes, that’s exactly what I was saying: if we’re selling at £25m we’re not replacing with equal or better quality.
So the bank balance increases (or our debt lowers) but our playing talent and therefore chances of making an immediate return decrease. That’s obviously a risk in its own right because miss promotion and the whole model collapses very quickly.
I agree that the hope is our recruitment dept have identified suitable successors that can get us up again. I’m not particularly convinced with the names I’ve heard but I do think the rump of the squad probably has enough talent to get the job done anyway. And to be fair our competition are getting raided too to equal things out.
But I’m not convinced that anyone we buy now will be able to step up to the premier league if we got up, which is the issue for me because by selling your Berge and O’Shea’s you’re actually removing the pillars you should be building around.
When we went down and we sold Pope, Tarks, Mee, Dwight, Cornet you immediately have 5 top players to replace if you go up. Then you get your arguments about too much change, team spirit, connections with the players, etc etc.
If we’re selling Muric, Odobert, Berge & O’Shea (minimum) I feel we’re in similar territory and I think we’re going to struggle to break the cycle without holding on to players that proved themselves in the premier league and building around them.
Thats why I can’t really get excited when we sell a good player regardless of the fee.
So far this window the club has received compensation for Vincent Kompany's departure, plus sold Muric and Odobert. Yes, others will leave, the club has a very large squad. Yes, it's better that the club is able to choose who leaves while retaining both the players to be successful thus season and be ready to be successful in the Premier League when we are back there. But, there will be a balance, the better players will be most in demand by clubs with money to spend, which will mostly be Premier League clubs.

That is all very well, but if the board are making those sort of decisions without consulting NewClaret and getting his approval, I suspect they might get themselves into troubleHoltyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 4:35 pmYou think the board don’t know exactly what’s going on and are acting without any element of pre-planning, strategy, diligence...

claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 4:13 pmSounds like we're going to have a seriously depleted squad and less money coming in than what promotion is worth. Very risky, as if the players rumoured to leave do leave, playoffs is certainly more realistic than top 2.

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
The other problem we will face is having to pay over the odds for any replacements for outgoing players as the selling clubs will be holding out for more as they know we have made big sales.
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
A lot of sense in your post and agree we have more chance of winning the league with an O'Shea / Esteve partnership but if Berge goes we desperately will need a suitable replacement or we will struggle with just Cullen , Brownhill & Messengo.GrahamBranchsPerm wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 6:40 pmI love watching Beyer at this level, absolute line breaker when fit. If we’re going to make good of this whole buying and selling strategy we really should refuse to agree any release clauses even if it means losing out on players in my opinion, so hopefully he doesn’t have one.

Precisely. Good for us to get into a bidding war.

I’ll be sad to see Berge go as with him I feel we’d be formidable this season. We have got to replace him with some quality, albeit finding someone as good as him will be nigh on impossible but a high quality player is achievable nonetheless.
I wonder if this will push United to go up to the £30m mark

Sander is 26, not even peaked. I wouldn't entertain anything less than 30 and it would be pure stupidity for us to do so

At least we know that is the absolute minimum for Berge now.
Will be replaced.
Will be replaced.
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
We know that the priority for the board and SP is to get back to the PL for next season, but for me if we had to spend another year in the Championship whilst a changing team develops it wouldn’t bother me too much, in fact I think I prefer it, as long as we get to the PL to grab some of that dosh the year after.

Has to be replaced.
An injury to Cullen or Brownhill leaves us hoping either Massengo is of the right standard or experimenting with players who don’t normally play in the centre of the park.

The thing is Jos our odds of promotion reduce each season. Now is the time.
Anyway - no one is stopping us this season, we are in a position of strength here (loads of players, high base, good start, weak teams around us (we are better than Luton and Sheff U).

Toney expected to go to Saudi Arabia for £50M.
Would give Brentford funds for DOS.

Hope this doesn’t set the tone for these next 10 days. Was already anxious even knowing Berge was one who would definitely leave.

Looking like Wout to Ajax is getting nearer.
Also a new prem club in for Berge, might leave United stuck with someone they thought they were selling…

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Just been listening to Sundays FTBHE Podcast.
They were talking about Massengo being a natural replacement. I think he could, he's definitely too good to be ignored, and if Berge stays unlikely to improve while sat on the bench. A season in the championship and we could be saying Sander who?
Tongue in cheek, but after all his experience at Bristol, this is his time.
I'd still hold out for 30 mill for Berge. 20 plus 5 for add ons, could end up being 20. That would be a massive waste of money.

Whilst I always expected we’d lose a few, I can only imagine the disruption of selling several key players after the season has started.
