Mobile signal / wifi at the Turf

Post by pureclaret » Thu Aug 22, 2024 2:08 pm

I am looking to change my mobile phone and plan, over the years the signal for both calls and Wifi have got worse , possibly due to increased attendance and more people having phones. I sit in the Bob lord and I do see other people who get signals on there phone. I did ask one person who said he used the BFC hub Wifi but he does use the BFC business room during the week so was unsure if that was why he got it, or is it available for all.
Im with sky which uses the O2 platform. Most other net works seem to be twice the cost for both phone and plan, and odd people who dont get signal are on other net works.
So what Im looking for is if it is possible to us BFC wifi or has it hotspot you can log on too? Or do I just forget about whats going on at other matches and just cheer on the winning Clarets UTC

Put the phone away mostly- worth a check but not worth worrying about your carrier just to get a reliable signal. When you have 15000 people in the same space all trying to get a connection tion most networks run a wee but slow :)

I don’t think changing it will matter - the signal is useless in the Turf. All of our large group are on different networks and have different models of phone and none of us get a decent signal on matchdays.
There is WiFi in hospitality which works fine but as soon as you walk through the glass doors to sit in your seats you lose the Wi-Fi and are back to struggling to get a signal.

On a matchday my phones works perfectly fine getting off the train at Manchester Road and continues to do so until reaching the town hall then I might as well be on dial up. I have to ask anyone in our group if they can check the train back isn't cancelled. I am with O2.

I’m on EE. It’s awful on match days in and around the turf.

I’m on the 3 network and I don’t think I had 3G, never mind 4G, for the entirety of the time I was in Burnley town centre and on the game. It’s always been pretty bad but now seems to be worse.

I had the hospitality Wi-Fi password for a couple of years which worked a treat in JML but when they redeveloped the void in that stand they’ve made some changes to the Wi-Fi and can’t get anything now unless someone leaves the glass doors open at half time - spoil sports!!

Yep that’s exactly what happened to me last week.
I’ll leave the door open from now as my gift to the public !

I used to have a business phone on vodafone and that did work all the time but that was 10 years ago so not sure if worth the extra £20 per month for signal at the turf, possibly just forget it given that i live in Rishton what emergency could there be that I could make a difference to if contacted during the match to rush home ?

I have Tesco ( uses O2 ) and with the exception of WhatsApp and occasionally Twitter I get nothing from the summit downwards into town. I’m happy to keep my phone in my pocket on the match, but it’s a pain in the rear for car parking.

I’m on EE and it’s pointless to try and get anything on t’interweb at half time. Ironically when I had an older iPhone I could manually select 3G instead of 4G and that would work fine, albeit a little slower than normal.

I don't think I have ever got a signal on the Turf with O2.

My lads seem to do alright on Smarty, but I'm not sure which masts they will use.

Same boat. Even on non match days, there's been times when i have no signal in the centre. Nice to be without it though sometimes!

I used to be with O2 and could never get a signal in the Bob Lord stand or anywhere on/near the ground.

Switched to Lebara (which uses the Vodafone network) about 18 months ago and never have a problem connecting anywhere in that area now.

Vodafone network works consistently and reliably for me - never have any problem getting online with 4g or 5g when I'm at Turf Moor.

EE works well for me. Sometimes need to go to airplane mode and back but better than O2 I had before which didn’t work at all.

I have 4 bars and 4G (BT Mobile/EE network) when on the Turf, but its still slow as hell ... as has been said its down to the numbers trying to access networks ... doubt changing phones or providers will improve much.

Having spoken to a number of female members of WYClarets about this on a walk the other week, they said that they’d tried to address this issue about mobile reception with the club and that not having the ability to check messages, make a call, after the match, when meeting others, has not been ideal. They said it sometimes makes them feel unsafe. I do think it’s something that needs looking at.

I can understand problems on the Turf due to numbers, but the poor town centre signal is a disgrace.

You still have numbers there as with most town centres up & down the country especially on weekends. People want to go busy places such as concerts/events where crowds gather you have to accept the trade off. It's nice sometimes to go off the grid & accept peace & quiet. I can't think of 1 occasion where I've not been able to access basic essentials such as sms & calls data is a different beast apart from outages which can happen anywhere regardless of traffic.

If you need a signal in town stand outside MacDs .We had to pay on the mobile for parking and it was the only place to get a signal

I recently had the same conundrum, and moved to Vodafone (seems to be best coverage for Burnley) and I can now get things to load like latest scores etc, whereas before on Sky it would show 4G but do nothing.

How many towns and cities do you visit on a busy Saturday and can’t get a signal? I travel around quite a bit and I’ve not been to many, if any, places with a worse signal than Burnley, over the last few years.

Something has changed because it’s got worse. I’m sure that there was a post on here a couple of years ago about mast issues needing to be resolved. Must be a big job!!

If the phone signal is poor in Burnley, even on a non-match day, something should be done about it. Hell, it’s not some remote Scottish island with 63 residents and a 1000 sheep.

I've been to plenty where I can't access data I haven't counted. That many places you can just hook up to public WiFi hotspots it's not a massive problem. Your phone should recognise them if you've used them before in theory you could walk around with data disabled hopping from 1 to the other & still have Internet connectivity.

I picked this thread up as I was coming out of Tesco and using their WiFi - tried to respond but no chance of a signal in town. It's appalling.

Bishop auckland wasn't great last week top of my head I nipped into the local witherspoons got a coffee with unlimited refills to fire off some emails it's a common thing. Depending on the times you get throttled off the host network I use a MVNO. Carlisle wasn't great the week before.

The signal as a whole in the Burnley area is abysmal, even in wide open places like Towneley park.

Recently I've been around most of Anglesey and to Ripon, Thirsk, Whitby, Downham, Slaidburn and Skipton. All had excellent 4G on Giff Gaff. Yet in Burnley town centre on any day no 4G. Even so I won't pay Vodafone prices.

I’ve not tried in Bishop Aukland but had decent coverage in Carlisle, EE and Vodafone.

My point remains though, the infrastructure should be in place to at the very least, ensure solid signal in towns and cities throughout the UK.

There shouldn’t need to be a reliance on public wi-fi, be that provided by the town / city or by swapping from one retailers hotspot to another.
Is there also not an increased security risk with public networks for those not tech savvy?

Ultimately, we’re all paying for a service from our provider and not always receiving what we should.

Different things work for different people & if you are resourceful you can or should be able to find a workaround. Can it be better? Yes for sure. We aren't at the stage where we are using tins & pieces of string.

I’m guessing the workaround and resourcefulness for not being able to get a signal on the Turf is to not go on the game.

Put the phone away mostly- worth a check but not worth worrying about your carrier just to get a reliable signal. When you have 15000 people in the same space all trying to get a connection tion most networks run a wee but slow :)
Up north they run a little slow. Have you noticed though that our mobile signal is fine when we visit London grounds?

Tried different phone operators the past 20 odd years and never had a signal strong enough inside the Turf.

This was exactly the issue I was having as the parking meter was out of action! Had to use the Big Window Wifi to access the app!!

Go with Voxi... Similar to gifgaff but they use the Vodafone network. £10 a month for plenty of data.

Anecdotally I've heard from numerous people that 02 signal is non-existent in Burnley town centre.

I'm on EE and have decent signal everywhere in town, apart from 90 minutes every other Saturday in the JHU. This leads me to believe that (O2 aside) it's a '20,000 people trying to get online at the same time inside a massive metal building' issue rather than a network issue.

Yeah when I was in the UK I used to use Voxi. It's actually owned by Vodafone, so exactly the same service and network, just a fraction of the cost, and it's only a monthly rolling contract. Think I paid a tenner a month for 25gb of data, and any social media or YouTube use didn't eat into the data allowance. Definitely worth a look.

Talkmobile is a similar thing but more aimed at the older generation who just want the basics & aren't bothered about endless social media data that voxi draw.
