The Smiths

Post by TheFamilyCat » Thu Aug 29, 2024 5:59 pm

Morrissey claims that he accepted an offer to tour as The Smiths with Johnny Marr. Marr ignored it.

Love The Smiths and a lot of Morrissey's solo stuff but fair play to Marr for turning it down.

Tempted to say What Difference Does it Make as surely Mike Joyce wouldn't be up for it having taken Morrissey and Marr to court a few years back. And of course no Andy Rourke RIP.

Sadly Andy Rourke doesn't have much choice.

Seriously though, Morrissey wouldn't work with Joyce again so it would never be a reunion of the band anyway.

Ah, see you edited it.

They turned down $10 million to play Coachella a few years back.

Marr is more interested in everyone telling him how wonderful he is and making special guest appearances at festivals. The only reason anyone goes to see him is to see him 'sing' Morrissey's lyrics.

Seen both live many times. Morrissey has the better solo back catalogue but his band are currently sadly lacking whereas Marr was THE sound of The Smiths so when he does play Smiths stuff it sounds great until he starts singing. The ideal situation would be if Morrissey & Marr played together but sadly it isn't happening anytime soon.

The Smiths wouldn't have been 'The Smiths' without any of them. Marr's guitar playing, Rourke's basslines, and Morrissey's voice/lyrics defined the band.

Surely there must be those who appreciate him as an awesome guitarist. I know I do. We've also seen Morrissey a few times in recent years. He still writes good stuff. His 'I Am Not a Dog on a Chain' is up there with his best output.

The Smiths sound is all down to the original band members - all masters in different ways.

Morrissey and Marr don't speak. Joyce doesn't speak to either of them and has sued them both in the past. Andy is no longer with us.

Apart from all that...

I'm a massive fan and also seen both many times. Fully agree with this.

Well, I'm a pro guitarist and I think Marr is unique, and is held in high esteem by many musicians.

Can't believe anybody doubting JM's ability as a guitarist.

It goes back a lot further than that. You are only a knock away from the door being unanswered on kings road & you have none of it.
