Foster is a player better suited to play against better opposition. He’s not a striker for low block sides. Plays much better on the counter attack as we saw last season.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Trafford - 7 - thought he was steady away today. He couldn’t do much about the attempt onto the post, there must have been 16+ players in the 6 yard box.
CJ - 7 - not what we’re used to in recent years as a RB, but those slating him must watch a different game to me. He battles well, defends well and doesn’t try to do too much, first half he was a constant option down the right but more often than not Cullen, Esteve and Worrall were just playing by themselves.
Worrall - 6 - he seemed very slow on the ball today. A few decent switches of play but he could have done it more and opened the game up, instead played an easy ball to Esteve.
Esteve - 7 - steady away, didn’t do much wrong, would like to see him do a few Beyer’esque runs.
Pires - 6 - can tell he’s a Brazilian in tight spaces, his close control is sometimes great to watch, but when he’s got time on the ball, he always seems to get caught with the ball under him, I can’t tell if it’s an accident, purposeful or just clumsy.
Cullen - 5 - thought he was poor today, not helped by the 40 yard gap between him, Brownhill and Hannibal first half. I just don’t think he’s the midfielder of choice against a team that will sit 10 men behind the ball.
Brownhill - 7 - additional marks for goal and assist, huffed and puffed and got his rewards in the end.
Hannibal - 6 - looked like a ticking time bomb again, teams know he’s a hot head and will try all the dark arts to get in his head.
Koleosho - 6 - his main threat nulled by a deep sitting defence
Anthony - 6 - his first touch and pace is great, think he struggled with a lack of movement around him
Foster - 5 - one of the worst games I’ve seen from him, his rant at Worrall I think it was when he lost the ball from a bad touch really p!ssed me off
Sarmiento - 8* - changed the game, need to find a way to get him in the starting 11
Flemming - 7 - great energy, movement, aggression. Another that needs to be starting
Laurent - 7 - love his presence in the middle, not scared to drive forward with it, which is exactly what this game was crying out for
The issue for me today was how slow the play was, lack of movement and urgency. That gap between the forward players and the defensive lot, was what you see in the last 20 mins of a Sunday league game. Then we’d go through stages of Hannibal pressing on his own, by the time Luca, Foster and Anthony pushed up, a clipped ball into Portsmouths midfield and they’d beat the press. Marlon Pack ran the game first half, and that shouldn’t happen with our midfield options.
I don’t think the ref helped, he was one of the worst I’ve seen in recent years. No flow to the game whatsoever and their players were talking the p!ss out of him.

Trafford 6- no chance goal quiet game
Egan-Riley 6- outpaced a bit
Worrall 5- meat n potatoes player , lacking today and slow
Esteve 7- decent game , organised
Pires 6 not convinced with this fella with ball at his feet
Koleosho 6- slightly subdued from the dreadlocked speedster
Cullen 6- ticked it over
Brownhill 7 + 1 for goal kept at it showed spirit
Anthony 5 underwhelming if a little short on supply
Hannibal 6 touches of class but patchy
Foster 5- I’m starting to wonder if Foster is actually any good .
Sarmiento 7 really switched it up

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Finding 4s and 5s for Pires really odd. Each to their own bur I really can't see what the argument for such a low mark is. He's been basically solid for us so far. He most definitely wasn't the worst of our back four today as far as I could see.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
I wasn’t at the match so no player ratings but i listened to Phil Bird on clarets+ and he said that Foster and Cullen clashed a couple of times which seems to go with some of the posts that question his attitude and skill has for Pires he got a knock early in the match and Matt Williams thought he never really recovered from it and was out on his feet in the last ten minutes that could account for his indifferent performance that’s just for todays match and not what people think of his previous performances UTC

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Foster is plenty good enough for this league. He struggled today until Flemming and Sarmiento came on but I still think he gets in every other side in the division.
The problem is not having enough back up for him as Foster and Rodriguez as our only two out and out forwards isn’t enough.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Trafford 7 looks a lot more comfortable these days
Egan-Riley 7 much better. Only criticism, there was an incident in each half where he was backpedalling and despite having time, he simply knocked the ball out of play. Probably conscious of making a mistake after the error against Rovers.
Worrall 6 not convinced, wins a lot in the air but too ponderous on the ball and lacks pace
Esteve 6 ok
Pires 7 thought it was probably his best game so far. All over the place and good on the ball. Some seem to expect the Luton through ball every week.
Cullen 4 well off the pace but he's just back to fitness
Brownhill 6 huffed and puffed as usual
Koleosho 6 at his best when running at full back one on one but we couldn't work those situations often enough
Hannibal 5 I'm not entirely sure what his role is. Seems to be starting as the support to centre forward but sits too deep.
Anthony 5 least effective he's been
Foster 4 there's a thread on him and he's worthy of debate. Yes he's capable of great moments and sometimes (rarely) great games. But I'm leaning to the side that doesn't rate him. If you're a dominant side in this league, you don't need a brilliant centre forward. I'd settle for someone we can rely on, someone who can control the ball, hold it up and lay off simple passes. A half decent centre forward will still get 10 to 15 goals in a promotion winning side.
Sarmiento 7 good impact and turned the game
Flemming 6 showed some fight
First half was just bad to watch. Very stop start, very ponderous and no creativity. But the performance over 90 minutes wasn't as bad as some are saying. There was only one team that wanted to play in the second half and we deserved the points.
There was a lot of games like this last time in the Championship and most of them ended like this one.

Jeepers that was a hard watch, with their time wasting tactics and our relentless passing sideways and backwards at the back. But hey ho it’s 3 points, you can’t beat a good old pea roller to win it.

Foster 5 there’s a player in there but we don’t see it enough. Don’t often see our own players arguing with each other.
Subs
Sarmiento 7 right sub giving us the quality we needed to unlock their defence
Flemming 6
Laurent 7 did well again
Saw Portsmouth earlier in the season and wasn’t impressed but they looked a different side today and defended well. We need to be a lot better but still early days. We’ve got some technically good players at this level but it’s not quite gelling.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Trafford 6 - had little to do, was beaten to one header but did fine otherwise
Egan-Riley 5 - looks like he has little experience at this level, which of course he hasn’t
Worrall 7 - defended well but for one header missed and set up the winner through aggressive positioning
Esteve 7 - did one really good recovery and protected the keeper well hence their few shots despite some useful breaks
Pires 7 - did really well going forward but is up and down at the back but his non control of a touchline ball was bizarre for a Brazilian
Cullen 6 - didn’t look fully fit yet and didn’t drive our tempo as he normally does
Brownhill 7 - the winner was a smart finish but was also all energy which we needed, a captain’s performance
Koleosho 6 - not convinced the right is his best position but he was dangerous and unlucky once or twice
Hannibal 6 - the conundrum is how to get him on the pitch because Flemming and Brownhill are ahead of him for me
Anthony 5 - feels better suited to away matches on the break or as a sub at home when we need pace
Foster 6 - one smart shot well blocked and three headers didn’t come off, needs to break the line more, looks to drop too deep
Sarmiento 8 - changed the game, too good not to start because of his clever work not just raw pace, his goal was sublime and his feisty nature as welcome as it is surprising
Flemming 6 - loved his “introduction to the Longside” challenge that got him his yellow, also changed the game and we suddenly looked very dangerous
A great game because we showed all the characteristics we will need to win this league. Our first two subs improved us and frankly I was surprised they didn’t start. They surely will now? I genuinely cannot pick who should start, I’d hope to include Tresor in that because one big weakness are our set pieces, we need that wicked fast delivery. So I reckon our left wing berth is even more competitive than last season, bizarrely. We have to play Flemming too, and due to his lack of raw pace I’d say behind Foster. These choices and team harmony will be Parker’s biggest task.
I thought Pompey were really good, looked familiar to each other, and are stubborn defensively. We will have easier games. Our own familiarity will come as they get used to each other, I’m not yet concerned about creativity but I did feel we got a selection wrong in omitting both Flemming and Sarmiento in favour of three genuine centre mids. We missed that x factor of an incisive moment.

Another strange game under Parker in that we’ve won but there remains a few questions to be resolved - though I guess there was under Kompany at this stage in his managerial career, just that it was more apparent what we were trying to do. Portsmouth were organised and resilient but I think our starting line up fell into their hands somewhat. Flemming from the start gives them a lot more to think about in terms of threat and team balance. Sarmiento more than staked his claim for a start next time out.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Nor can I!
So much talent. We are at home and every time he got the ball, it went sideways or back.
Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Great to win in injury time to scupper their constant stand in front of the ball routine. Still lots of questions to answer. Mainly that we have a problem that neither of our centre backs seem to be willing or able to ping a quality diagonal to switch play quickly. So many times we were open if we moved it quicker. Hopefully this will come. But I for one can't wait for Ekdal to return as he has that in his locker. Reminded me of some of the more average home performances under VK where we found a way at the death to win.
JT - 6 Flapped a bit, not that much to do
Egan-Riley - 5 Did ok, bit rusty
Worrall - 5 - Not sure he suits the way we want to play.
Esteve - 6 - Needs to move the ball quicker
Pires - 7 - Thought he was good today after a ropey first 20 mins.
Koleosho - 6 Didn't offer that much. Needs to find a way of getting on the ball if our defenders can't / are unable to pass to him.
Cullen - 6 not bad seen as he's been out injured
Brownhill - 6. -Thought he was pretty average, but got the key goal.
Hannibal - 5 Didn't offer much
Anthony - 5 Poor game
Foster - 4 - Starting to lose patience with him. I'd play Flemming up top next game. His tantrum with Cullen was really poor
Sarmiento - 8 Quality cameo
Flemming - 7 Gives us a bit of edge
Laurent -7 Gave us more legs in the middle.
Strange game, but one which will be familiar if you watch back quite a few under VK. People need to give this team time to gel. Some of the grumblings today were a bit concerning so early on in the season.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Largely agree with this, except 6 Egan-Riley. He did ok, out of position. Worrall 6, slow, slow, but defended well.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2024 11:03 pmTrafford 6 - had little to do, was beaten to one header but did fine otherwise

Trafford 6 - Not really much to do, just steady away.
Egan-Riley 6 - Did well defensively, but another who seems very slow on the ball.
Worrall 5 - Really frustrates me how much he slows the play down and some of his passing was really poor.
Estéve 7 - Some crucial timed tackles and covering for his team mates. He is getting better and better.
Pires 7 - Amazed by some of the low scores, thought he did really well today compared with his previous outings, especially in getting us forwards.
Cullen 5 - Quiet by his Standards
Hannibal 6 - Thought he was just starting to liven up when he was subbed, but very surprised with his lackluster first half.
Brownhill 7 - Made a real difference when he started to push us forwards and eventually grabbed that crucial goal.
Koleosho 7 - Even if a lot of it didn't really come off for him today, he still always drags two men in and creates spaces around him. Works very hard.
Anthony 5 - He has got great feet and is good in tight spaces, but too often he should have crossed, but instead cut back and the move died out.
Foster 6 - Looked better second half when he picked up the ball and went at the defence rather than being a target man. First half was poor though.
Flemming 7 - His movement was the difference. He was always looking for the ball and uses it well when he receives it.
Sarmiento 7 - Lovely finish and looked far better on the left than he did in behind the striker previously. Always ready to beat a man too. exciting player

The biggest letdown for me has been Joe Worrall tbh, in all the games he's played for us.
It's not like he's been awful or anything want to make that distinction, I was just led to believe that he was supposed to be a real commanding centre-half (at this level, at least) and one who marshals the defence.
What I've observed is that he is frequently pulled out of position and then lacks the recovery pace to get back, leading to the defensive line becoming disorganised. He also really slows our play down in possession, which is crucial when playing against a lower block.
I have no doubts that he's a great pro to have in and around the club, bringing some of that much needed 'culture' back. I'm hoping it's just his fitness/'ring rust', but for me, Ekdal or Beyer would be straight in when fit. Heck, I'd have preferred to keep AAD, who at least had scope for growth.

One of those games that wasn't really exciting but made worse by a very poor Referee. A deserved win none the less.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
From tv
Trafford 6 not a lot to do but still slow in getting rid of the ball
Egan Riley 6 improved as game went on, but not a full back, not enough pace
Worrall 6 bit of a plodder but steady away, would prefer to see Beyer or Eckdal
Esteve 7 another good game
Pires 7 I can't understand some of the low scores, he defended well and was involved going forward
Brownhill 8 mom plus one for that so important goal
Cullen 6 didn't look fully fit, needs more help in the centre
Hannihal 6 needs to channel his energy in a better way
Koleosho 7 he was always dangerous when he got the ball
Foster 6 too isolated for most of the game, better with Flemming alongside him
Anthony 5 I don't think he's a first eleven starter
Sarmiento 7 certainly made a difference
Flemming 6 needs to start
Another hard earned three points against a well drilled defence. Our midfield isn't functionning at all yet. The back four have nobody to pass to, Cullen is too isolated, none of them get up to support Foster quickly. We need a link player behind Foster and midfield, this is where Flemming should be starting. Parker still has work to do on his team blend and tactics, though I'm happy with the results so far.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
From Clarets+ Replay this morning.
Trafford - 7 Solid - No chance with the goal. Quite possibly his challenge for the header that hit the post was enough to make it hit the post. Had he not made the challenge I doubt he would have saved it.
Egan-Riley - 7 - Did everything right defensively (the goal was not his fault) and contributed to the attack when he could.
Worrall - 7 - Defensively solid, apart from the header that hit the post. Some good passing forward when there was the option, which wasn’t very often. An assist too.
Esteve - 7 - Good defending, not much forward activity.
Pires - 7 - Solid defending and some good forward play.
Koleosho - 6 - Worked hard and moved around the pitch but not so effective. Crosses not quite good enough.
Cullen - 5 - Not many opportunities for him to do his stuff and docked one point for the stupid challenge that earned him a yellow card.
Brownhill - 7 - MoM - Moved around the pitch to limited effect until he got the winner - extra point for that.
Anthony - 6 - Difficult against a crowded defence. He did make some half chances for himself but not for others.
Hannibal - 5 - Floated all over the pitch and cut out the stupidity but was not very effective and didn‘t give much assistance to Foster.
Foster - 6 - Battled away with little service. Liked that he enjoyed Brownhill’s winner like the rest of us.
Subs:
Sarmiento - 7 - extra point for the goal but that’s about all he did.
Flemming - 5 - As good as he was last week he looked a liability in this game. Rightly got a yellow for the ‘handbags’ incident, he then offered further opportunities to get sent off which fortunately the ref didn’t take. I get being aggressive but it needs to be controlled aggression.
Laurent wasn’t on long enough but he did exactly what was needed.
Portsmouth seem to be a good away team judging by the fact that they only lost twice away last season and this time have already got draws at Leeds and Middlesbrough. The idea that we should be beating these teams comfortably at this stage in our development is wishful thinking. This win is a good result and we found away to do it.
Defensively we were pretty sound, their goal being of good quality. In attack we were lacking.
In the first half we played reasonably well but whilst things didn’t go quite right we weren’t that far away. There was some movement forward that created spaces for long passes but not enough. The defenders were looking for opportunities but there weren’t many. Foster was way too isolated and mostly he was dominated by the Portsmouth defence.
In the second half there was a bit more urgency but still not much more effect until the Sarmiento goal. We sneaked a win.
One good point - we have game changers on the bench.
Comparison with VK’s first season? We would have drawn this game!

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Seen enough championship football that very few games are comfortable. Take last weekend for example, 100% Sunderland go to Plymouth without a win and lose. Think back to previous seasons spent in the championship, teams will come here with the low block and take every opportunity to waste time and nullify the game.

Re: Burnley v Portsmouth v Player Ratings
Trafford 6 not much to do. Fluffed on corner which almost cost us a goal. Otherwise solid.
Egan-Riley 6 decent at RB. Solid if unspectacular, much better than in the middle.
Pires 7 some good work. Much better 2nd half than 1st... but so were the whole team tbh.
Worrall 7 Solid, decent distribution. The only player looking to move the ball forwards. Having watched the game twice I can't understand the bandwagon chorus of those saying the slow movement was his fault. The lack of movement was in the midfield and upfront. As soon as Sarmiento and Laurent came on it changed. Nobody was willing to beat a man or play around them prior to that.
Steve 6 some bad touches. Still mostly solid but work on your first touch big man.
Cullen 5 not at his best (sub Laurent 7 a big improvement, got us going)
Brownhill 7 good winner. Still think at this level his best position is the one Hannibal is currently playing in.
Hannibal 5 poor today. Hasn't really got going for us yet (sub Sarmiento 8* MOM Changed the game. A belter to tie it up and involved in the winner)
Foster 5 Some good touches, some poor moments (sub Jay NR)
Anthony 5 has quality but didn’t see much today (sub Flemming 6 he’s going to be valuable this season. Almost got himself sent off)
Koleosho 6 sub flashes of brilliance, not much end product. Portsmouth had a plan to keep our wide men quiet and it mostly paid off.
Parker- Good to see the boss willing to change things up and try something different early enough to impact the result. Our strength in depth is going to carry us far this season.
