"We’ve now won more home games than we did last season too."

It's a fact, but irrelevant really. Different league, different team, different manager and much much poorer opponents

Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
I did wonder who would take the penalty and when Brownhill stepped forward, given his "wall or row Z" approach to free kicks, I wasn't filled with confidence....

Me neither. It was a great pen, but surely our centre forward, who needs a goal, should be grabbing the ball?Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:20 pmI did wonder who would take the penalty and when Brownhill stepped forward, given his "wall or row Z" approach to free kicks, I wasn't filled with confidence....
That's the first time I can remember us winning a penalty with us having nobody on the pitch who's taken one before, as CT says in his article.

Would have like to have to see Foster demand it

Or that Brownhill was the pre-agreed penalty taker.

It won’t often happen but did the last time we won a pen at Old Trafford that Zeki Amdouni scored.

I remember the myth that we never got penalties under SD because we didn't get in the penalty area often enough. And yet it didn't seem to improve that much when VK took over.

Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
I once spoke to Willie Irvine about pens because he never took them. He said pens were dead ball kicks and he thought those were the players who took them.
My only concern last night was Brownhill’s usual free kick delivery but I wouldn’t have wanted Foster taking it. Having said that, I didn’t think Barnes or Vokes would be good penalty takers but they were.

One of the worst regular takers we've had was Chris Eagles. He used to go in the same spot basically every time. Don't think his record was that bad for us though. Keepers probably didn't do the same amount of research as they would now.

Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
He missed two or three - one of them at Derby he scored the rebound. Everyone knew where he was going to put it.
Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
David Eyres always seemed to go high into the top right corner. In the odd occasion he went the opposite way the keeper made a save!

Fair to say he wasn't the brightest player we've ever hadClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 4:55 pmHe missed two or three - one of them at Derby he scored the rebound. Everyone knew where he was going to put it.

Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
Good report. More or less echoing my thoughts.
'" It was hardly inspiring, not even the first half when we had our best spell, but this game is all about results "
I was thinking exactly the same as I walked back to the car.
It wasn't beautiful, it didn't fill me with joy, but we won.
We are doing better than almost all the other teams. The players are growing in confidence. The manager has cemented his position.
All the rest is frills around the edges.
We won

Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
I'd say the best penalty takers I've seen at Burnley were Ron Futcher and Graeme Alexander.
They only missed one between them... I think!
Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
I was convinced Vokes would miss each time, but he scored them all. But then he went to Stoke and I think he missed every one he took, or the majority anyway.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 4:30 pmI once spoke to Willie Irvine about pens because he never took them. Our conversion rate over the last 10 years or so must be superb, I can only think of Cornet's miss at West Ham.

The Cornet one was doubly annoying because he should never have taken it with Jay Rod on the pitch who doesn't seem to miss many from the spot.Fretters wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 10:41 pmI was convinced Vokes would miss each time, but he scored them all. Arfield missed one at Palace in 2014 and the fateful Matt Taylor one against Leicester in the same season.Fretters wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 10:41 pmI was convinced Vokes would miss each time, but he scored them all. Grezza by a mile, though I recall Peter Noble was brilliant at pens.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 7:46 pmI'd say the best penalty takers I've seen at Burnley were Ron Futcher and Graeme Alexander.

Has to be Graeme Alexander whilst at Burnley I don't think he missed one in over three years.
I might be wrong with the three years.

He missed one at the Cricket field end but can't remember who against
Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
I think David James was the goalkeeper when Grezza missed that penalty, he put it wide.

Bristol City. A lot of people cheered as he took it, expecting what seemed the inevitable.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 8:40 amHe missed one at the Cricket field end but can't remember who against

Good shouts from you and targetman. Couldn't remember who against and would never have remembered the keeper.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 9:15 amBristol City. A lot of people cheered as he took it, expecting what seemed the inevitable.
I do though remember it going wide and still thinking it had gone in though

Re: REPORT: Plymouth pay the penalty and we take the points
He missed about three when he went back to Preston - those misses were a sure indication that it was time to hang up his boots.
In terms of our failures from the penalty spot, since Grezza & Eagles, I think these are the only ones where we've failed to score.

"Only once in post-war football have they recorded a win, that by 2-0 in January 1977 on a frozen pitch. A League Cup win in 1973 is their only other Turf Moor success since 1938"
That makes their away following even more impressive

I remember the newspaper headline from 1973 being something like ‘the pirates of Plymouth surprise the Tartars of Turf Moor’ given our spectacular start back to life in Div 1
