“It’s a dark day for England as the managers job goes to a GERMAN.”

Sky news were saying another manager, who was first choice but messed up their interview earlier in the week.

Who was that?

I think some sections of the media have misread the mood music on this one. Not one of my Turf going mates and pub meetup folk, according to my WhatsApp Group, gives a toss about him being German. Yeah, you'll get noisy people on forums, phone-ins and online newspaper BTL comment sections, but they are mostly the same shuts-ins who moan about everything.

Probably Carsley who was big favourite before the shocker against Greece. He's also been giving quite confusing and mixed messages since then.

Quite a ballsy appt from the FA, I think they need to look at the system they have to bring coaches through though, stupidly expensive to gain a pro license and no guarantee of a job after doing it.

Apart from Eddie Howe this is probably a better appt , couldn't care less if he ruffles a few feathers in the team they need a rocket up their arse most of them anyway.

I can't see him just shoe horning players in that don't play well for a start.

Very pleased they have shown some ambition this time.

Would have preferred an English coach because it is a national team and that should include the coach given the impact the coach has. I can see why some get triggered by that view, but using that logic all international football with nationality restrictions is now pointless because people should be free to live and play anywhere. We have players like Sterling and Guehi who were born in Jamaica and Ivory Coast respectively, we have many playing for nations like Ireland who only qualify through relatives, so in reality international football has become a mish mash anyway so having a German as manager probably doesn’t matter.

If he’s the best man for the job who cares where he’s from. Might not have not gone down so well 30 years ago but I think times have moved on. Seems like a good appointment to me ( probably being paid an obscene amount though). Let’s hope it works out and we have success.

If people continue to buy the Mail, and actually believe its headlines, after today's headline then they are truly a lost cause.
That headline, like many in the Mail, has no place in 2024. It's something that we might have seen in a 1940s or 50s comic.
"Asked for the winning formula of his Daily Mail, Lord Northcliffe (its founder) replied: 'I give my readers a daily hate.' This is as true now as it was then -I'm afraid.
Time to get behind our new manager. We've had a European manager before.

The media are a bunch of idiots.

Here's Sam Wallace's take on the England job.

The stories are 3 days apart.

Loving all the pictures of Tuchel wearing a lederhosen to try and alienate him. I hope he turns up for his first game in charge wearing one to really send the papers into meltdown.

I think they saw how they managed to whip up fake anger with the Lee Carsley thing last month and thought it would be another easy win for them.

Don't worry, we're going to have the poppy discourse soon to really keep Fleet Street busy. Wouldn't be surprised if Tuchel jacks in before the next qualifiers.

People ARE free to live and play anywhere… it’s called league football.

International footballs qualifying criteria has been quite slack if you ask me (I’m aware you didn’t) Country of birth should just about do it…. That means Haaland should be available for England.
What we shouldn’t really have is people being able to choose to play for Germany because their great grandma once ate a bratwurst. Neither should they be able to swap allegiance once they’ve pulled a nations shirt on. Just my thoughts on it for what they are worth…

Anyway, quite happy with the appointment, let’s hope he can stop the nonsense and return us to playing football.

Not sure how we've ended up here, but for anyone who is interested.
Hitler was born in Austrian and was an Austrian citizen, but he despised the old ethnically diverse Habsburg Empire, embraced German nationalism and finally renounced his Austrian citizenship in 1925.
He then became a "stateless citizen" for 7 years, and was therefore unable to stand for any public office. In 1932, aged 43, he was offered citizenship of Brunswick by the Interior Minister and de facto became a German citizen. His rise to power from this point was meteoric.
Nevertheless, officially, he was only a German citizen for 13 years.
(The annexation of Austria by Germany did not take place until 1938, so for most of the 30s it was an independent state.)
