Comes over very well, has had to be patient but hopefully on an upward learning curve.

Doesn't he have the second best passing stats in our squad?
So perhaps not so green as you think.

I think his passing has been outstanding. Have seen small bits of doubt around his performances and I can’t see it at all. He’s looked solid and a really good passer to me. Deserves to keep his place in the side even with Worrall and Egan fit, in my opinion.

No way. Decent footballer, but we can't get promoted with a 5 foot ten cb can we? He'll be targeted massively in the air. Most of his passes are sideways or worse to Esteve. Think he would be a good dcm or a back up right back.NewClaret wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 7:24 pmDidn’t know that but not surprised.

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
I'm pretty sure Egan Riley is six foot and he's not looked wanting physically to me. He's certainly bigger than Ben Mee.
I think he's done very well as cover coming into the side and making a big step up. Defensively, he's done very well. I do though personally think his distribution has been a bit safe, and a bit hesitant at times - teams have tended to allow him to have the ball and allow him to make the pass because it tends not to be a progressive pass. All of which is entirely understandable because he's a young player making a big step up, so this isn't a criticism and isn't a surprise.

Tall centre halves is up there with footballers should be able to use both feet in the great big myths of football book.
Soon to be added is that goalkeepers need to be good with their feet.

Kevin Beattie was one of the best headers of a ball that I have ever seen, he was 5'10"summitclaret wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 7:48 pmNo way. Decent footballer, but we can't get promoted with a 5 foot ten cb can we? He'll be targeted massively in the air.
Don't believe me, watch him score for England vs Scotland, this is how to head a ball .......

He’s 6ft according to Wiki. Certainly doesn’t look in any way short to me.summitclaret wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 7:48 pmNo way. He’s started 5 games and 3 clean sheets so doesn’t appear to being targeted in the air so far.
His passing hasn’t all been sideways. Some of it is, obviously but he’s by far the most progressive of the three main CB’s we’ve seen this year. Moves the ball faster than Worrall, plays long diagonals well and also the ball over the top. Esteve, who is great don’t get me wrong, doesn’t play either of those passes and doesn’t move the ball as fast as CJ either.

Interesting, I’d say he’s the most ponderous in possession from what I’ve seen.

Look at the team photo from the recent thread. If anyone thinks he's six foot they need to go for an eye test.

Of course footballers should be able to use both feet. It gives them a huge advantage and when they've trained almost every day since they were kids there's no excuse to be one-footed.distortiondave wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 8:20 pmTall centre halves is up there with footballers should be able to use both feet in the great big myths of football book.

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
Yeah we can't have a short (is he though?) CB like CJER and get out of the Championship!
I mean can you imagine someone like say Barca playing with say Mascherano at CB, that would just be ridiculous.

I think Egan Riley has been getting better and better at CB.
I don’t think he suits a right back position at all as I think he can be relatively clumsy in a 1 vs 1 situation.
Pretty happy with him and I think we have already seen an improvement since the start of the season

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
Described as hesitant , too small, ponderous, targeted by the opposition
I wouldn’t want him in defence. We want clean sheets !
I know it’s about opinions. Nobody said you have to know about football to support your team.

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
He hasn't been targeted in the air yet because the teams he played against weren't interested in scoring or often being in our half. We've had the defensive luxury of a 6 foot right back with Roberts out. However, surely the latter will start, to improve our attacking. So imo Humps has to play cb or John Egan, until Worrall, Beyer or Ekdal are fit. Otherwise we have to put Lauren in cm, or we are so vulnerable at set pieces.

But we aren't in a league with Barca. We are in a glorified cloggers league. I'd bet he's the smallest cb in the league.

What you, and others like you, seem to expect is they should be equally adept with both feet and that's actually quite rare
It's one of the more bizarre beliefs I see with football fans

He’s done pretty well, apart from his frightening cameo against Bastards.
I think he’s a good in possession and can pick a pass too. He looks like Beckenbauer on the ball compared to Worrall, for instance.

He’s a perfectly adequate stand in. Let’s not pretend he’s anything else.

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test

I said cb not defender. Anyway those stats have him taller than he actually is. Look at the relevant heights of our players on the team photo or next time we play the pre line up facing the North Stand. He's barely taller than Brownhill and way smaller than Hannibal.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 10:40 pmhttps://www.worldfootball.net/players_l ... roesse/12/

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
Take your point distortiondave, but it's a great advantage being comfortable with both feet.distortiondave wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 8:20 pmTall centre halves is up there with footballers should be able to use both feet in the great big myths of football book.

There are, and have been, a number of successful CBs shorter that six feet tall. O'Nien seems to cope okay at CB and he's 5'9".
But the keepers kicking IS already carved in stone.

He's fine at this level with good players around him.
Not the slightest chance we start with him in the PL, should we have the good fortune to go up.
But I hope he continues to do well with us.
Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
He has played in the last 3 games and we have kept a clean sheet in every one of them.

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
There are times you need to trust the manager and coaches. In pre season I thought we could move him on, but he has impressed with some decent performances of late, and he not only has the potential to improve because of his age, but he has experienced the grounding at Man City where he was a well thought of youngster. This is a very positive situation for our club

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
I'd much rather he be groomed to be a DM than a centre back. He's benefitted from the extended absences of Beyer and Ekdal and won't be in the match day squad unless he adapts to a defensive midfield role once they are back at it

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
He’s done OK. He’s a Claret. And fully behind him.
But….
Strikers like Kieffer Moore will murder him in the air. Totally agree his passing is slow and he can be ponderous.
Yes I would far rather have Egan or Worrall. And even Humphries I think at CH. Who I think has been very average at RB. Roberts starts there today I think.
I think we’ve done brilliant given the injuries and fully proud of the lads who have stood in, but they are not going to get us top two. We need players back and optimistic when they are we finish strong.

This I seriously doubt. And he's a fraction under 6ft tall, .03m shorter than Sergio Ramos, whose apparent lack of height did him no harm at all.

You can frame guessing the lad's height however you want, there's still no sensible way to say he's too small to play centre half for us.

As Wout has demonstrated, It’s not always true that if you’re tall, you’re good in the air. Being talk helps but it’s about how high you can jump, timing and anticipation etc.

Re: CJ Egan-Riley Ahead Of Sheffield Wednesday Away Test
Thought he did well on the deck but was exposed a good few times in the air yesterday. Esteve too (Ugbo chance they were both passive / napping), and on a few more occasions same from CJ.
Sure we can keep learning though and defo not trying to have a go at CJ. He has stepped up well enough and seems a great lad.
