Kalvin Phillips shocker!

Post by IanMcL » Fri Oct 25, 2024 5:32 pm

Looks like we dodged a bullet, along the way. Deli Ali, Calvin Phillips, what goes on in their heads?

What does Kalvin Phillips being messed about by Man City have to do with Deli Alli?

Two players with undoubted ability and potential, ruined by pressure and big clubs?

The pressure is immense to succeed especially when a big fee is involved.
How we help those who are facing issues that are very personal and totally impairing their footballing ability is a major issue
However the press hyping up very average talent into superstar staus certainly doesn't help the problem of wasted talent.

Just have no idea what goes on in player's personal lives. Is Kalvin Phillips the type who is happy to flitter away his career (whilst earning thousands per week) or has he some personal issues which are affecting him?

Dele Alli has been mentioned and a couple of years ago you could put him in the bracket of throwing his career away but then he did the interview with Gary Neville and talked a lot of the struggles he has had in life and appreciate just the fact he got as high as he did is a fantastic achievement he should be proud of.

I saw Arsenal fans having a go at Zinchenko and his poor form after his first year at Arsenal but after that first year is around the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and no one has any idea the mental struggles he must be going through with no doubt having friends and family in Ukraine and fearing for their lives whilst being expected to go out every game and put in a 10/10 match winning performance.

KP’s main issue being he was overhyped after his euros “ 1 season wonder “ year . City signing him raised a few eyebrows ( though he clearly had the assets they valued ) and doubled the pressure . While he’s a talented player he’s nearly 29 and he’s gonna have to put the work in to turn it around . He’s nothing without Charlie Taylor on his left IMO…

I never got why Man City went in for him. He’d had a good season and did play well for England, but he was never, ever a player capable of the standards expected by a team wanting to win Premier League and Champions League titles.

That being said, quite how low his form appears to have sunk, is a surprise.

I've thought for a long while he hasn't reacted positively to leaving Leeds and will eventually end up back there despite the huge drop in wages. Of course Leeds have adopted a different style to the galloping all out blood and guts stuff.

Very frustrating to watch someone with such talent who simply can't stay on his feet.

He was outstanding for DL as dcm. Let's hope he stays at Ipswich, because Leeds are defo our biggest threat. Hopefully we'll have Tella on loan 1st Jan.

He didn’t want to leave Leeds and that’s the problem, never been the same player although he’s had limited opportunity’s.

Dele Alli ruined by Spurs? Really? He was incredible for Spurs for a few years and then his form dropped off a cliff.

I’ll never understand people who think Alli was just a player with potential, he was performing incredibly well.

Funny how things work out. Dele Alli and Sterling looked like they were going to be key men for England for years to come. Both forgotten men now.

File Phillips alongside Drinkwater - someone whose form has dropped off a cliff and is no longer able to perform at the highest level.

I never rated him that highly anyway - even when he did win England’s player of the year - although he did do the basics very well.

Phillips is more like Rodwell. Bought unnecessarily by City too young and rotted ever since.

Because Leeds has an offer at the time they couldn’t refuse and he was told by the Board that they had agreed to sell him.

He was 26 when he signed for Leeds so not that young. Personally I think he's a fairly average midfielder who Bielsa got a ridiculous level out of. Nobody, including Guardiola, has been able to get him playing at the same level.

Absolutely talented, but had the potential to be even better.

Look at his stats vs Bellingham, and Dele did it at a lesser club.

Spurs blocked him going to bigger clubs, that would’ve kicked him on. DL is a brutal Chairman. MP is different to JM as a manager. So yes, I think Spurs ruined him.
