Re: Atmosphere
Downward trajectory? Are we just dismissing the most exciting season we’ve had in years under Kompany? I don’t think strolling the Championship with over a hundred points is a downward trajectory’. It was actually stratospheric.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 9:12 pmIt’s happening at every single club across the country, fans are being priced out, this tippy tappy crap every club wants to play is the opposite of an atmosphere builder.
It doesn’t help that we have been on a downward trajectory for the last 3-4 seasons so fans are just not as engaged.

Re: Atmosphere
I'm probably just repeating points already made here but I find people criticising the atmosphere a bit odd really as :
1. The Turf isn't a "cauldron" of noise generally..what is happening this season is no different to what has happened every season, at least since the ground became all-seater
2. As in virtually all grounds in this country we, the crowd, respond to what is happening on the pitch. it's human nature. If we were thrashing someone playing flowing football the atmosphere would be massively better. At present we are pretty pedestrian and unexciting so the atmosphere inevitably suffers. A terrible referee or bad fouls by the position is another good trigger for the crowd !!
Personally I find the kind of atmosphere you see at grounds in Germany, for instance, where the crowd constantly sing, chant and wave flags seemingly totally irrespective of what is happening on the pitch, a bit weird. Also those odd black-clad "ultras" at Crystal Palace ! The Turf is fine...we just need more on-pitch excitement and goalmouth action!

Point 2 is fair enough and true, but point 1, the Turf was bouncing under Coyle when we got promoted, and even when we got relegated.Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 11:20 amI'm probably just repeating points already made here but I find people criticising the atmosphere a bit odd really as :

The truth is if we lost 3-4 every week, we'd be ****** off with the results, but the Turf would be bouncing again. Atmosphere can't be generated with slow, negative football. It's the hope, and the belief that lends power to our voices.
The PNE game will live long in the memory as the biggest waste of 90 mins in my life.
Re: Atmosphere
Coyle season isn’t comparable. We were in unchartered territory. We were collectively in disbelief in the position we’d got ourselves in the promotion season and the PL season was pretty much one big party where the results didn’t matter as such. We just enjoyed it whilst it lasted.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 11:30 amPoint 2 is fair enough and true, but point 1, the Turf was bouncing under Coyle when we got promoted, and even when we got relegated.

We’ve now beat the best sides, away from home, got into europe and finished 7th in the PL.

As long as I have supported the club I have felt "connections" with players at the club. Call it something else if you like but it's the same thing.Row x wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 9:02 amNot being pedantic in any way, it's just this ridiculous phrase that came into being last season, that nobody can logically explain
Of course we all have favorite players, and teams, but a connection with them?
I'll offer a wager if you search this forum, prior to say 2020 , you will see no mention of people having a connection, or losing connection with the team, players or club
Fletcher, James, Dobson, Blake, Little, Branchy, Mee, Parky, Benson, Zaoury etc etc ad infinitum. We know they will move on but for me that connection is what keeps you engaged. Otherwise it's just maths.

I cant see any scenario, where we play fast attacking football and the Turf feels like a hospice ward.
We aren't playing slow because of the crowd, this team is just set up that way. As long as it continues the atmosphere will remain dire.

Re: Atmosphere
I must be watching a different game - I think many people have confirmation bias here and are seeing things they want to see.
It certainly wasn't slow football when CJ launched a cross-field pass to Luca, who (eventually) cut inside and rifled one at Vigouroux, was it?
Some are making it out like it's just side to side and nothing else, which couldn't be further from the truth, then make it out like 22/23 every game was total football galore?
Better quality in the final third and we start putting some of these chances away, it's that simple.

Re: Atmosphere
The poor atmosphere begins with the appalling 'music' before the game.
I have attended a few German matches this season. Each club has its own club song and the build-up before the match is tremendous. Also during the game each set of supporters supports its own team continuously without wasting time with any negative songs about the opposing team or players. Add the fact that you can buy beer etc. without having to leave your seat and the fans, who prefer to stand, supporting the teams from the terraces and the intensity increases.

In years gone by I've socialised with a few rovers players, and their families, I've felt a connection with them, because I knew them, but I wanted them to lose every game, so the connection was pretty useless as far as football went, yet people are forging connections with people they've never met, and so long ago, connecting with players wasn't even a thing.

Re: Atmosphere
So again it just illustrates how we are all different. When I was eight and playing footie with my big bruv in Scott Park, in my mind I was Leighton James or Paul Fletcher. When I went and queued up for their autographs outside the Cricket Field Stand on a Saturday, I felt connected to them. It was all that eager expectation and excitement. Yes you grow up and you don't perhaps see it as you did as an eight year old but you still (usually) feel that anticipation and excitement that you did back then. That's what being a fan is. If it was aloof disconnect then there aint much mileage in that for me.Row x wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 3:01 pmLoved everyone of them, but never felt any connection with them

The difference is the phrase "connection" wasn't used then, and until 2 years ago never had been, so when we worshiped all these ex Burnley players, chanted their nameds, had pictures on our walls of them, did we fell a connection with them, did we ****, they were players, who played for Burnley, who we thought were great, and as I've said previously, if you can find mentions before 2020 of fans having "connections " in the numbers people have now, I will happily pay a donation to your chosen charity
Otherwise just accept its a new thing, that has no logic.

Re: Atmosphere
The term “connection” might not have been used much prior to 2020. Have we maybe considered that actually this team and last seasons team was one of the first teams in a lot of people’s lives that they don’t feel connected to?
Example: end of year player of the season awards by supporters clubs. Great opportunity to meet your heroes, talk to them in a normal setting and feel like you are connected more to the team.
There’s nothing like that now. Is it even possible to access them for autographs etc before games now? Equally on the players part, they don’t get to know the local community as much. It feels like if you want access to the current players you have to pay top dollar.

Edit.....not a week goes by that our players don't attend a community event. Very well publicised

Like I said, we will have to agree to disagree. You say you want people to explain it to you, people have given you solid responses yet you still don’t get it. Which is fine, I won’t lose any sleep. Look after yourself.

Re: Atmosphere
To my mind, one of the issues facing atmosphere is that we are an aging group. Many season ticket holders are getting up there and maybe less inclined to be 'atmosphere creators' and the younger fans seem to have a much higher sense of expectancy for immediate success and get disheartened by the lack thereof.
Re: Atmosphere
We all ( I think) are Burnley supporters, over the years we've supported them win, lose or draw, through relegation, and promotions, when we fail do we lose that support, or when we win do we increase our support? No we don't, but last year "fans" started saying they were losing connection with the club, and now they are saying they've always had that connection, but at the same time admitting it's a new thing..logic?.....

People have always felt connected and in recent times not felt as connected. In what world is that admitting it’s a new thing?
