Motivational team talks.
Motivational team talks.
Do they work ? I'm not sure there is any actual replacement for proper tactics and talent.

Henry V before the Battle of Harfleur. 'imitate the actions of a tiger, stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, disguise fair courage with hard- natured rage' ............. and try and score a goal.

The Al Pacino "you gotta fight for those little inches" speech from Any Given Sunday usually gets wheeled out whenever this topic comes up.
I always enjoy Alec Baldwin as the man from Head office "motivating" the real estate guys in Glengarry Glen Ross..."First prize a Cadillac, second prize a set of steak knives", "The leads are weak !!?....YOUR weak " etc etc

In my opinion Owen Coyle built a career in motivational talking- he could convince anyone that they had a chance to win a game.
His down fall came when the players stopped believing him, that’s when you need the tactics.

Very funny is Steve Bracknell on social media. It’d be great if he got his own series on TV.bfcjg wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 8:13 amDo they work ? I'm not sure there is any actual replacement for proper tactics and talent.

they can work, but unfortunately they become less impactive by repetition.
Re: Motivational team talks.
Personally, I found that they always made me feel that I was not part of the group, so they generally have the opposite effect of what is intended.
One to ones etc I'm fine with. Group bonding, no way

Local rugby club seem to have developed the habit of thumping their chests and growling at team mates in the last few seconds prior to kick off. I think this may be intended to intimidate the opposition.

To turn this thread around, if you were going into battle, what would work best for you?
Quiet, intelligent words?
Inspirational speaking?
A leader, beating his chest?
Time with your own thoughts?

Probably quiet intelligent words instead of the manager especially Kompany just shouting a load of expletives .burnley007 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 4:02 pmTo turn this thread around, if you were going into battle, what would work best for you?
