Happy with the performance in general....but..
Less than a minute of added time left...2-0 up..we take a corner into the flag...really?
SP gets so much unwarranted crap from a handfull on here...but stuff like that isnt going to help his cause.

Trafford 7 - another clean sheet, calm with his feet
Roberts 9* - lovely assist, clever movement and up for it
Egan-Riley 8 - solid again
Esteve 8 - the van Dijk of the Champ, can’t get past him
Pires 7 - wanted a bit more going forward from him
Cullen 8 - followed up Saturday with another solid showing
Hannibal 6 - energetic but part of our creativity ‘issues’
Laurent 6 - tidy enough
Anthony 7 - he’s looking confident right now
Sarmiento 7 - +1 for a brilliant goal he started & finished
Rodriguez 6 - not as effective tonight
Koleosho 6
Professional performance tonight. Strangled a good, albeit lacking in confidence, Cov side. That’s the least amount of chances they’ve created in a game all season. Our final ball continues to frustrate at times but at least there were decent numbers getting in the box.

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
Trafford 7 - quick off his line and decent handling
Roberts 9 - MOM. Outstanding up and down that line all night. Lots of flicks and clever turns.
Egan-Riley 8 - well deserved goal, lovely chipped pass and deserved it to go in
Esteve 8 - very solid and really gave them no sniffs
Pires 6 - not as creative as normal
Laurent 7 - a slight lack of quality but was energetic
Cullen 8 - good stepping forward and holding back, though we do need him to inject tempo
Hannibal 6 - energy but little quality, it is there but he doesn’t show it enough
Anthony 6 - as Hannibal, quality is fleeting, I sense he has more talent than he shows, but he never hid
Sarmiento 7 - frustrating how he drifts out of games but when he turns it on he is a match-winner or creative key, as he did today
Rodriguez 6 - a bit leggy but led the line OK
Koleosho 7 - good energy, stretched them, and limited how ambitious they could be
Another frustrating game overall. Nowhere near as good as at Bristol but we won comfortably while creating little and at times not looking like we wanted to, with too many safe passes back and players not surging forward. If we have a 100+ year record defence we have to nurture it, it is a USP that could win promotion, but there remains a balance, and we still feel too negative to me.
The Boro game feels important but I feel that we are needing the narrow wins over mediocre opposition even more, so Stoke is vital. The win we grind out wins we may yet open our eyes in February and find we are 10 points clear. The bookies say not, but we do have attackers to return and on balance I remain positive, because we are injury plagued with our main attackers out, and are using our 7th choice centre back, who is thriving, and doing really well in the table despite the injuries. Surely it can only go upwards from here?

Really.....he thought we might concede twice in the last 45 seconds or so?
OK.
Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
Trafford 6 - nothing to do
Roberts 8 - best performance of the season
CJ 8 - getting better every week
Esteve 8 - back to making it look easy
Pires 6 - in moments he’s prime Stephen Ward, other moment he’s prime Les Thompson…
Cullen 8*- as Saturday I thought he was excellent
Laurent 7 - brings the physicality we lack in there
Anthony 8 - really good game
Hannibal 7 - the effort is there no doubts
Sarmiento 7 - strikes me as a better number 10 than wide man
Jay 7 - bit leggy late on but he’s a football brain - gives us a focal point and links the game miles bettter than Flemming/Foater
Koleosho - 6 can’t fault the effort
All round, taking first two games aside, our most complete performance. Egan-Riley a revelation since the start of the season and Cullen returning to his best.

We actually lost the ball from that and set up a Cov attack.

An absolutely bog standard, regulation, run of the mill, totally dominant 2-0 win and boy did we need one!! Coventry aren't crap, but they couldn't really get into the game in any meaningful way and we absolutely bossed them. We need more games like this!
On a slightly negative note I thought Koleosho would be dynamite coming off the bench with 20 minutes to go, but he was still using his immense skills to run into blind alleys unfortunately and CJER was definitely trying to cross the ball when he inadvertently scored. Having said that, pretty much everything is looking much more positive. Let's not forget Kompany's side didn't hit their imperious stride until the Rovers home game in mid November so I'm rather more hopeful we can be in the top two come May. (We'll see!)

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
If you win playing like that it's solid and professional, but if you don't, its more turgid and uninspiring. But at the moment we're the right side of those margins.
Trafford- 6 - very little to do with his hands, although he dealt with set pieces effectively when he had to, but he needs to make the pitch bigger and be a bit more accurate and ambitious in his distribution.
Roberts - 8 - lovely assist for the goal and generally effective getting up and down the right flank, although he had one shaky moment defensively.
Pires- 6 - steady but not able to find the quality on his final ball. Not used enough when he wandered into acres of space on the left side.
Egan Riley - 7 - defensively very sound and made his own luck with the run and cross for his goal. Surprised he didn't use his switch of play more given the space was obviously behind and outside their wing backs.
Esteve - 8 - class above.
Cullen - 8 - a couple of slightly rash moments but he and Sheaf were the two best players on the pitch and he kept our midfield ticking over really well.
Laurent - 6 - came into his own when we were seeing the game out. Reasonably effective in breaking the game up but we needed far more purpose and positive intent from him in the first half.
Hannibal- 6 - not as effective as against Bristol City, although he wasn't as much of a liability either. Needed to take more responsibility for playing the killer pass, delivering a cross, or getting into a shooting position when he had chance. Playing I'm that role, it can't always be someone else's job.
Anthony - 8 - thought he had a very tidy first half, played a part in the goal and then helped us see the game out diligently, although I'm not sure why he was asked to play as a wing back when Coventry got controlled possession.
Sarmiento - 7 - struggled to impose himself for long periods and looks less a winger then a 10, but took his goal neatly.
Rodriguez- 7 - about our best player in the first half. Faded in the second half but he helped us defensively whilst he was on and kept working.
Koleosho- 7 - worked hard and gave us a counter attacking threat even if not everything came off.
An important and deserved win that was more of a grind than it should have been against an unambitious Coventry side. I found the conservative team selection, with three essentially defensive midfielders and a relatively one paced front three, surprising - and the set up which also saw Anthony drop into a wing back role out of possession rather than pressing high (as against Bristol) even odder. I'm not sure it worked in a first half in which we struggled to create anything of note and whilst we might have hoped a well worked opening a goal might settle us down, the second half became rather too even a scrap for comfortable until Egan Riley's fortuitous goal made things safe.
But - 33 points from 17 with our injury record is a fine effort and sets us up really well for a tough 6 weeks to come. In that sense, we're as well placed as we could have hoped, even if we aren't playing well yet.

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
Difficult to find any great fault with tonight, other than we need a more mobile striker. It's coming together and we look like we're growing by the game. I fancy the Boro game could be a humdinger! Egan Riley is fast becoming the first name on the sheet; he gets better every week and looks really composed. It's crazy to think that nobody would have been bothered had he left in the summer. Well done that man!

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
It was a bit negative, and actually didn't work, but once we went 2-0 up, keeping a clean sheet was the priority (IMO).
We're setting new records now. That's still just 6 conceded in 17 now, and none at home since mid-September,

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
I am not writing the lads abilities off in these areas but we've had a good few looks at him in behind the striker now and I've not seen anything to suggest that he is a man that is capable of generating 10 goals or assists per season in that role. I don't think he has a cross or a cute little through ball in him. I'd say it's a big contributor in why we don't look all that threatening.claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 10:47 pmHannibal- 6 - not as effective as against Bristol City, although he wasn't as much of a liability either. Needed to take more responsibility for playing the killer pass, delivering a cross, or getting into a shooting position when he had chance. Playing I'm that role, it can't always be someone else's job.
I would love to see him besides Cullen, buzzing about like the little terrier he is and breaking up play. I also think he has the right attributes to pick up the ball and drive with the ball from deep like Berge did. I am just another know nothing on the Internet but i feel sure that's where he'd do his best work.

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
Trafford 6 Nothing to do, the time wasting he does gets on my nerves though.
Roberts 8*Everywhere down that side if the pitch, needs to put these level of performances week in week out.
Esteve 8 What can you say about this lad, if he was a bit quicker would probably be a 50million player.
Egan-Riley 8 Consistent week in week out, goal was a bonus, but that came from his own determination to win the ball back
Pires 7 Decent, gets in a lot of good attacking positions but we do not the ball to him often enough
Cullen 7 neat and tidy, last couple of games looks like his old self
Laurent 7 neat and tidy just does his job.
Hannibal 6 Runs about a lot, good pressing, passing poor though, deffo not a 10
Anthony 7 Looks better on the right, dovetails well with Roberts
Sarmiento 7 A good option with games coming think and fast,
being able to rotate Anthony/Koleosho and Sarmiento will help, good goal, hope the injury is just a knock
Rodriguez 6 put a shift in but no service direct to him
Overall decent, watched the Cov/ Sheffield highlights and thought they would give us a game, they were very poor especially in the first half. That said we worked hard, pressed up the pitch and show some decent moments. Two goals is a bonus and a clean sheet keeps the run going.

Re: Burnley v Coventry - Player Ratings
From Live TV
Trafford - 6 - not much to do but most was good. Short passing very good, long passing poor, especially first half. Is he thick or just young and stupid? He was booked earlier in the season for ‘waving a card’ but hasn’t learned the lesson, doing the same when Bassette was booked. As his wasting time antics are always a risk of a yellow this could have become an issue if the ref had either spotted or not ignored this.
Roberts - 7 - Defensively OK, only two errors, and in attack good. Excellent football for our first goal.
Egan-Riley - 8 - Back to his best and pretty faultless display plus a fluke goal as well.
Esteve - 8 - Reaching a consistently high standard of performance. Nice accurate cross field pass too.
Pires - 6 - OK in both defence and attack. His corners aren’t that good.
Mejbri - 6 - Not a bad game and part of much good work on the right. However, in a game fairly fought by both sides, why is he still spoiling for a fight. The ref was good by having a quiet word and that seemed to sort it out.
Cullen - 8 - MoM - Back to his best, available for the ball all over the pitch that enabled much of our work to come together.
Laurent 7 - Ably supported defence and attack. I think I prefer him to Brownhill.
Anthony - 8 - Just beaten to MoM but he is our only real attacking force. When he gets it right he’s neat, tidy and effective. Shame he couldn’t get the goal his play deserved.
Rodriguez - 5 - No service but little effect. Chose the wrong option when he shot poorly instead of setting up two free team mates.
Sarmiento - 7 - Seemed less of a threat then Koleosho but actually was more of a threat! Nice goal and generally contributed to our performance.
Subs:
Koleosho - 5 - Lots of energy but blind alleys as usual.
Other subs not on long enough but:
Humphreys - looked again steady and reliable.
Massengo - worked really hard pressing to prevent Coventry build ups.
Hountondji - a bit of a threat. One wild shot that would have been better passed to a team mate. Another that wasn’t far away.
A good contest and good win against what looks to me like a good well organised team despite their lowly position. It was built on the two mighty pillars of Egan-Riley and Esteve with Cullen providing the links and a real goal threat from Anthony.
This is another small step forward and we need to make further progress as we face some very tough looking games in December.
On the subs, I can see why Koleosho was brought on, to provide some pressing and a threat, but perhaps it might have been better for a calmer head like Redmond so we could keep possession more late in the game.
