I think there is but it’s only in play if the defender has made a genuine attempt to play the ball. I’m not sure he was anywhere near the ball.

Wilder has brought in plenty of fire power upfront along with other good signings across the team.

We are doing so well without a recognised forward apart from Jay but he can't be expected to be our main attacker. Come January if Parker is allowed to strengthen up front and get shut of the sulking wage drains I really do think we will soar. Our rivals can't really get any better, but we really can and we sre in a good position.

Looking at how easily Sunderland opened up Sheffield United's defence at times last night you'd hope we'll create a few chances against them on boxing day.

They were without their best defender last night, and their other first choice centre back for 50 minutes. With those two in harness their defensive record is outstanding, even if it isn't as good as ours.

Wilder deserves huge credit for what he's engineered at Sheff U. They were awful last season, had really tight finances over the summer and yet with some judicious cheap signings and a determination to hold their better players they've turned themselves into extremely credible promotion contenders. They're currently tracking on course for 100 points despite plenty of upheaval in the summer of you ignore the 2 point deduction they suffered and my guess is that if we finish above them, we'll have been promoted.

Campbell in particular is galling - as a pacey forward who can play right or centre he was always the sort of player we could've done with signing. Hard to imagine Kieffer Moore and O'Hare wouldn't have improved our squad too. Unfortunately they had a head start in recruitment on us and they used that well.

A fair appraisal . I seem to recall Dyche was interested in Campbell 4 or 5 years ago. Yes they have bought very wisely throughout the team using the lower leagues at times. Their midfield pairing of Souza and Hamer are as good as anything in our division, and could compete in the PL.

We were linked with Campbell once under Dyche and I followed him since. He got a bad injury and when he came back he really struggled to find any form. Struggled to get in the Stoke team for a while and then when he did there were a lot of Stoke fans calling for him to be dropped again. He definitely wasn’t in the kind of form where you’d have expected us to be looking at him. His record was no better than Obafemi’s for example.

I’m not sure about Moore. Pretty sure Tony said we were in for O’Hare and Sheffield United outbid us though. I think they paid a lot on wages.

Cooper at £2m rising to 4m was outstanding business although in the context of retaining Trafford you have to think Hladky on a free was probably the better deal for us. Free cover and presumably Cooper would’ve wanted a #1.

I think who they kept that has really been key though - Hamer, Souza, Ahmedhodzic, etc. They’re the spine.

Wilder has done unbelievably well. Assembled a very decent team for this level on a shoestring (relatively) and manager of the season so far by a mile. Looking forward to seeing how we do against them. Hopefully with a fully fit squad to choose from.

Let's not forget that Sunderland should have had at least a draw with the missing penalty
