Geordie Failure

Post by houseboy » Mon Dec 02, 2024 9:53 am

I don’t take much notice of the PL when we’re not in it due to my having little or no interest but just looked at the table to see where everyone is and I see Saudi United in 11th place. What happened to the much vaunted biggest club in the universe after the take over? What is happening there, are they being cautious not to be in the same trouble as City?

FFP Happened and this is why I agree with some financial regulation being in place

They could have just come in and spent a fortune to get them there and there abouts but now they have to stay withing the lines.

If they want to be up there, they have to do it differently to City

FFP isnt perfect by any stretch but it served a purpose to attempt a more even playing field.

I'm not sure thats the case, isn't it a tool to help maintain the status quo and prevent upstarts dining at the very top table?

It's a tough one but I know Newcastle had to sell players to buy players this last mid season... Without FFP they wouldn't have had to do that

Also, look at City now... aging squad in places and they wont be able to blow £300M in one pop on players

Average spends in the transfer markets are down too.

FFP means clubs wanting to get to the top are finding it nearly impossible whilst it also forces teams to sell their young homegrown prospects, such as Elliot Anderson (and another one whose name escapes me) in Newcastle's case.

Can’t remember where but read something a couple of weeks ago that the Saudi’s are reassessing their move into sports. Apparently going to reign in spending on golf and overseas football among others.

Have lived on Tyneside 40+ years, the Geordies are stoical and realistic having won nothing of note since 1969.

If we can get back to a big 4 instead of a big 7, it'll give more clubs a chance to achieve European football.

Clearly they are MASSIVE but not as MASSIVE as the Champions of Europe.

FFP is there to look after the big boys and nothing else. It’s nonsense.

It should protect clubs from owners who take advantage, for example spending money the club doesn't have etc. But if i invented a widget and was worth a couple of billion why could i not GIVE not LEND Burnley as much money as i wanted?

What ever you think about BRFC you have to give Jack Walker credit, he GAVE them his money!! Wouldn't be allowed today.

Interestingly Arsenal have a 200 million interest free loan from their owners on the books and Man City won that bit of the tribunal that directors loans should be included in FFP.

He was not a homegrown player because he was signed from Odense for £8 million in July 2023. This was Yankuba Minteh who immediately went out on loan to Feyenoord, returned to Newcastle on 30 June 2024 and was transferred to Brighton on 1 July 2024 for £35. Not bad for a player who was only 19 at that time. He has made 5 PLstarts for Brighton and come on as sub 3 times.

They were looking to buy Gueye last summer. How would they have afforded that?

The needed him too as they've been missing both Botman and Lascelles. That may not be their only problem but it is a big one.

You're sort of missing the point.

No I am not missing anything. I just gave you the name of the other player who Newcastle HAD to sell along with Elliott Anderson in order to try to stave off any big financial investigation into their dealings relating to FFP.
There will be more to come.

Apologies, it looked like you were suggesting that it wasn't true as he isn't homegrown.
Mason mount and Connor Gallagher are other examples, it's a ludicrous system

No problem. I agree that it is ludicrous, however, it is like most other things in English football these days. PL rules everything and the rest just have to go along with it ----including the men in suits at the FA -----are they getting somehting in their back pocket?

City, love them or hate them, did invest very heavily in infrastructure, which is outside FFP / P&S rules. They then reaped the benefits in Palmer, Foden, Rico Lewis etc

Have the Saudis invested nearly half as much in infrastructure?

Are you talking about this Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia makes more than 900 sponsor deals in 2034 World Cup plan
Kingdom set to be awarded tournament in December
Agreements also made with many football federations

That Guardian report refers to this investigation I posted on the MMT earlier

It is inevitable - as we have long known that Saudi Arabia will soon be confirmed as the host nation for the 2034 World Cup - it has been arranged that way by FIFA President Gianni Infantino but too make sure there is not too much dissent the ere will be no vote just a single acclamation for the hosts of the 2030 Centenary World Cup and the 2034 World Cup.

that will not stop the investigative media undertaking their research though - take this from the Danish group - Play the Game

Saudi Arabia’s grip on world sport
Play the Game presents a new report and dataset which uncover the extensive scale and intricate networks behind Saudi Arabia’s sports strategy. Mapping 1,412 key positions across 209 Saudi entities and documenting 910 sponsorships in sports globally, this research provides unparalleled insights into one of the most influential players in international sports today.

When you consider the money at the disposal of the Saudis it makes you realise why they don’t seem to keen on getting rid of fossil fuels. Could you imagine a world where oil becomes surplus to requirements.

This was the story Chester, no idea if there’s any truth in it. It came out about a month ago.
