Re: Our Ashley
Some interesting views on this post.
I thought Barnes was technically a very good footballer. A fair few of his 50 odd goals demonstrate this, he was also a very intelligent player.
Other point I thought was interesting were how he had a positive influence on the other players, he would have been a big part of the dressing room. Thinking back to the Boro game when we found Ash was not to be offered a contract extension it was sad but odd. Watching the documentary and you got the feeling Kompany didn’t like Barnes influence in the dressing room.

Re: Our Ashley
The problem with that logic is:
a) he achieved great things with us and is rightly revered
b) our current lot haven’t, mostly
c) our current lot (some of them based on the last 24 hours and some out on loan) seemingly don’t want to be here, whereas Ashley still does
So I hope we beat them, but I’ll still be applauding him, and I’m sure he'll be applauding us. That makes us the club we are.

For me the last bit of character left the club when Ashley moved on. No fun in the current squad or the football they play.

My first ever Burnley game that!Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:49 pmI went to that game at Stoke in November 1963. Ended 4-4. Jimmy Mc was my boyhood hero and those years I saw him play 1958 to early 1963 were absolutely wonderful. I was only 11 when I went to the game with my family but I had no interest in how well he played that day. We'd all gone in the car to the match to support our team.
I was fed up at half time when they were 3-0 up and elated an hour later when two goals in the last few minutes got us the point.
We went over the Staffs moors in an old green Ford Pop!

Jesus f***ing christ, I've fallen off my chair at someone saying that our Ash was 'technically very good'.
He had a great shot, worked for the team, got about them and scored a few,
Technically very good? No, just no.

A lovable rogue. How he avoided red cards I'll never know.
Just coming back from injury. I really wish him well other than on Sunday and then at TM.
Played a huge role in our Championship successes especially two years ago.

Technically very good at striking a football without doubt, and really good at finding those pockets of space to get a shot away.
Adept at sticking his arse out to fend off defenders.
Constantly falling over to try to get a free kick... and he used to get plenty of stick on here for it.
A very good player for us, but some posters are seriously (and weirdly) overdoing it now.
As for "our Ashley? actually he's Norwich's Ashley, not ours.

Back to goal under pressure he was always able to get into position to bring the ball down, or win a free kick with his back to goal, something we have missed massively since he left, this season and last.
Very underrated.

Re: Our Ashley
Overhead kick goal at West Brom was as technically brilliant as you can get.
Also he was pretty good at Penalties. Did he ever miss one for us? Was crafty winning that one at Anfield, and then showed balls of steel sticking it away for our first win there in decades.
Looked completely finished that day at Sunderland and showed immense character to pull himself out of that rut and make a massive contribution towards the 2023 promotion not least scoring one of the goals at Boro that clinched it.
I’ll stop there.

Re: Our Ashley
I'd say so, yeah.
He started OK and improved to the point where for a while he and Wood looked as good a partnership as any outtside the top four in the Premier League. His last 18months or so in the PL through he largely looked like he'd forgotten how to play football and even the sh*thousing had stopped working as referees just pityingly waved him to his feet after each unsuccessful attempt to win a free kick. If I remember rightly even he said he thought he was finished here after a non-performance at Sunderland(?).
He did magnificently to turn it around from there though. and that last half-season where he looked to have his mojo back forgives a lot of those sins.
Re: Our Ashley
I would have him back in a heartbeat to finish this season off

I really don't think he was as good for us as people make out.
He was OK for his first 2 seasons, injured for the third.
Then had a couple of good seasons and that was about it.
His last season at this level was OK, better than it looked like it was going to be at one point but nothing spectacular.

This. Compare and contrast with Flemming in the last run out. It is why we look better with Jay up top. They provide a platform to build from. Add in their desire and nous, they are invaluable. Barnes is in the top twenty best ever signings for Burnley. He's a legend.billyhamilton82 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 10:15 pmBest chest contol I've ever seen from a Burnley player.

Re: Our Ashley
He was excellent for the first 10 games in the Prem with 4 goals (should’ve been 5 at Forest) and 3 assists. It looked absolutely the correct decision. Then health issues, mental then physical, massively disrupted his form (apart from the 10/10 Villa away game). Let’s hope we can get him back to that level.

If fans were allowed to place their tick against one of those players as they enter the turnstiles on Saturday against Watford I'm quite confident that Barnes would win by quite a large margin.
But we will never know!

He was having a very long chat with Parker at the end. Regardless of whether Sheff U are in for him, we should be too. Exactly the kind of battering ram we’re missing. Take him on a contract ‘til the end of the season. Who have we got that is better? Foster? Hountonji? Don’t make me laugh. Great for the dressing room, too.

But I absolutely thing he was loyal
He could have gone and played somewhere else and not been happy not about playing and still earnt a good wack
He and Sean and many others have stated that he was an intregral part of the team and squads don’t just contribute for 90 minute a week
Scott Carson at City comes to mind
