Dear Scott...

Post by burnley007 » Wed Dec 04, 2024 10:01 am

Well, I made my feelings pretty clear, much to everyone's disgust and outrage, but it would appear I got it wrong.

The football still isn't pretty or exciting, but we look like we could play till Easter without conceding a goal! If this team had a decent striker and a few more options in attack, (returning players should do that), then I can see the team continuing on this upward trajectory in the League.

I am well aware that I am going to receive dog's abuse for admitting I was wrong about the appointment, but I feel like I have to admit it publicly.

Although I am still not convinced about the long-term, Scott has done enough to shut me up, eat 3 slices of humble pie and accept that I need to get behind him and his team regardless.

Sorry Scott and sorry Alan P.

I'm logging off now because I know I will find the abuse upsetting and I don't want to get into pointless arguments with other Burnley fans.

I’m not sure why you’re being so defensive (no pun intended). This is a great post (if you leave out the defensive bits). Admitting you were wrong is a great look, imo.

There are a handful of posters who simply use this forum to argue and insult other posters. Everyone can see who they are. The pop up on every match thread itching for a fight whether we've won, lost, or drawn.

Beyond those internet ever-presents, I think the normal folk can appreciate that it's fine to have a different opinion and it's also fine to change your mind on things. I doubt anyone worth responding to will hold it against you.

You might be wrong again!

I'm waiting until this month is over before being too judgemental. There are some tough games coming up which will test all aspects of our team.

We have made progress but let's see if we can convince against the likes of Middlesbrough twice, Watford, Norwich and of course Sheffield United.

I remember the Arsenal winning games 1.0 when they won the league but know one complained so I'm not to bothered if we do the same in this league as long as we get the job done and get promoted. UTC..

cheers guys.

I'm not saying I'm gonna go out and buy one of his fancy cardies, but he has done a lot better than I ever thought he would.

The biggest thing to note is the team moral, especially Traff, he looks so involved with the lads, he ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate with them after the goal. Very positive signs after seeing some worrying ones under VK.

There are folk on here who would complain if their god was manager and we’d won the CL 6 years running but had lost in the League Cup.

Well done for admitting your error, 007, we’ve all made them.

Nothing wrong with admitting you are wrong, better to do that than dig your heels in forever when it becomes obvious.

I held my hands up the other month for saying CJ was probably the 6th best choice CB at the club (if all the recognised CBs were fit) - really glad he's shown that to be total nonsense :D

Trouble is, now you’ve publicly stated we could play ‘til Easter without conceding, we’ll get hit for 3 on Friday nite… :?

Admitting you think you got it wrong is something a lot of people can't do so fair enough

It's a funny one for me in terms of long term if you get it right or not as in football these days there isn't such thing as 'long term'

So everyone gets it right at some point

He will either leave for a better job or get sacked (Resign)

Everything that happened and the jobs and lessons he must have learned as a manager so far I think he's has and is doing fantastic and long may it continue

In terms of performances - I think we have been spoilt (Bar last season) so have an expectation which a few years ago we wouldn't have had.

We all get it wrong sometimes. I've been very critical of SP due to the nature of the football we're playing. We are showing good signs currently, which is hopefully a sign of more to come. Given the player sales, and number of incomings he's had to deal with, I'm happy to eat a slice of humble pie at the moment. He's doing far better than I expected he would.

However, I'm still of the opinion that the performances are only acceptable as long as we're getting positive results. It's not entertaining football. It's similar to Dyche football in many ways. It's pragmatic, but not edge of the seat stuff. I'd argue football is struggling with entertainment in general these days though.

I went to watch Rochdale vs Man Utd U21's last night and the football was no different - two teams failing to play out from the back, and very little goal mouth action. When will someone be brave enough to go back to 442 with free flowing wingers and two up top? If it was good enough for Ferguson and Wenger, it should be good enough for most!

And the WM formation was good enough for Herbert Chapman, but I doubt we’ll be seeing in the Premier League soon.

Nothing wrong in admitting you were too critical. Of course those that love nothing better than to continue criticising SP will reply to you with something to the effect “ let’s see where we are at the end of the season” . Personally all things considered and I include in that what he had to deal with in regard to players leaving at such a crucial time together with all the hype that surrounded VK he’s done a brilliant job in very, very difficult circumstances. I hope we’re in a similar position to our current one around January and that Pace & Co find him some much needed funds to strengthen the squad. Good post though.

Anyone can have an opinion, the trick is being able to hold your hands up if and when you are proven/looking like you were wrong. Too many on here are incapable of that which is incredibly childish, like it even matters on a chuffing Burnley FC messageboard!

I'm not sure anyone was really opposed to you not rating Parker, it's still very early days. But spamming every single thread with unnecessary and often unrelated Parker-out nonsense was tiresome and was, I believe, the reason that you got called out. You posted provocatively to get a reaction, and you got one, so getting on the defensive now is quite amusing.

That said, I'm glad you've decided to get behind the team.

I well remember that Arsenal period. I worked with a great chap who was a Gunner and he used to say ‘I love my boring Arsenal’. He used to say they’d go to games and hear fans chanting Boring, Boring, Arsenal but they just smiled and thought of the trophies they were winning.

An all too common a comeback on here. Dare to have a different view and you know nothing about football.

I think I’m yet to see such a reply, alongside any evidence of this Pep esque football wisdom.

If anything, you’ve taken yourself out of the firing line by admitting you were wrong. It was the repetitive negativity that was getting you a bit of stick.

(And yes, I realise I’m repeating myself here, but I’m nothing if not a hypocrite:) )

I understand your comment, but it feels like the world has been blinded by Pep ball. There's more than one way to play the game. It would be nice if some were brave enough to go against the grain and play to the strengths they have in their teams. The quality of player reduces the further down the pyramid you go. Not everyone can play out from the back all the time.

I used to enjoy the earlier Dyche "mixed" style of play. We played when we could, but were pragmatic when required. We scored some wonderful goals by moving the ball quickly and decisively. Ings vs QPR springs to mind, Barnes vs Wigan. Great football can come in many different guises.
