My dad died today

Post by distortiondave » Mon Dec 16, 2024 4:28 pm

I think quite a few of you will have known him or had dealings with him over the years. David Hothersall, or Oz.
You may have bought spare parts off him over the last 50 years at Belgrave St in Nelson, Euronics in Barrowford and Colne, and quite a few of you would have had drinks with him back when Nelson still had pubs and clubs, or in the Dragon, Bridge or White Bear in barrowford, Emmott in Laneshawbridge and latterly colne Wetherspoons.

He was only 71 but had cancer of the everything so it's not unexpected, but he was a big Burnley fan, worked hard, tremendously funny, enjoyed a pint of normal working man's and a woodbine and always good company.

Really sorry to hear this DD, although we have never met in person (to my knowledge) I remember your support when I tried to launch my model accessories Business and our other conversations. I therefore consider you a friend. My thoughts are with you and yours at this terrible time. thinking of you all. Stay strong and God Bless you all and your father. X

Sorry to hear of your loss dd ... its never easy losing a parent or sibling but you will always have your memories ...

We lost a brother at age 71 just 3 years ago (Martin was an ST holder at TM, and sat next to me for 6 years after retiring back to the village here after our Mum died).
Our sister posted a picture on on our whatsapp group of a Musical Christmas tree her Daughter-in-law had given to Martin 20 years ago ... she had decorated in his memory (he sort of hated it because ... we always wound it up when we visited his house, and it drove him mad, but because Deborah gave it to him he tolerated it) its brought back many memories and gave me a huge smile of away trips following the Clarets.
Thoughts with you and your family dd.
RIP David Hothersall UTC

Really sorry to hear this. I knew him from the Dragon, amongst other places. I particularly remember his wierd postcards to the Dragon, from his holidays. One that comes to mind was his description of sitting on a beach in Greece, and digging bones out of the sand. What a strange card. RIP Dave

Very sorry to read this news, Dave. Not always, as more and more ladies go to matches as well as playing the game, but very often you follow the club your Dad followed. I had no choice despite living 250 miles south of TM, but am very glad to have had a father who supported a non-media friendly club.

You dread losing your loved ones and irrespective of the age and, in your case, the knowledge that your Dad was dying, it is still an unbelievable blow.

Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.

Sorry to hear your sad news DD. I used to live in Belgrave St and remember the electrical shop. The paper shop on the corner opposite was run by Frank and Margaret Hothersall early 80s, are you related to them?

Sorry to hear that Dave.

I do wonder whether we should have a in memoriam tab in the announcements section of UTC to mark such moments. For posters and fellow clarets.
It feels like an appropriate thing to consider. Just an idea

Yep, my grandma and grandad. They eventually had the paper shop opposite the Crown in Colne, back when cans of pop were more expensive than cigarettes.
Grandad Frank was nuttier than a fruitcake, but eventually he moved to Fence and bought a bungalow that came with its own full size electric pylon in the garden.
Years later, after he'd died, we delivered a machine to next door, and I remarked to the owner that my grandad used to live to next door, to which she replied 'Frank? He never had any clothes on, did he?!' and it turns out he'd just been nudebathing under the basking glow of the electric pylon for years, in full view of the neighbours.
