Happy Birthday Trevor Meredith

Post by ClaretTony » Wed Dec 25, 2024 10:29 am

Trevor played just 37 league games for Burnley in which he scored eight goals. I've pictured one of those goals, THE most important of them below.

He is 88 years old today.

His daughter is my neighbour. I’ll pass on some birthday wishes today!

I met Trevor and his wife back in 2010 when they came to the CM dinner. What a nice man too.

Put them in your own order but he scored one of the four most important goals in our club's history in my view alongside Bert Freeman (1914 Cup Final), Ian Britton (Orient game) and Wade Elliott (Play-Off Final).

There won't be many arguments regarding those 4 choices.
Even on here!

I'd go Britton, Wade as both those goals saved us from huge problems, Ian's saved us from extinction and Wade from a very difficult financial crisis on the horizon, then Freeman our first success and finally Trevor, the first successful season for me but wouldn't spit my dummy out of any order fellow Clarets' might choose

He used to travel to Haslingden on the bus to meet his girlfriend around the time of his goal v Man City. She lived just two streets along from me and I was a star struck 8 year old if I happened to see him calling round to see her.

May only have played 37 times for us, but he seems to be a name our fans think of fondly, and of course he was part of one of the greatest first team squads in our history

Yes Tony, absolutely lovely guy. I was sat with him at the CM dinner, along with Jimmy Mac, Jimmy Robson and others. I had hoped to bring John Angus down at your persuasion, however, he decided not to come at the last mnute because he really did not enjoy travelling!
That was a smashing night and was good discussing memories of the 1959/60 season and the clincher at Maine Road which I attended as a 13 year old.

What a brilliant night it was. It was disappointing John Angus opted not to come and Bobby Seith had to pull out at the last minute because his wife Jean wasn't well.

I was just 8 years old when we played that game at Maine Rd. on Monday May 2nd 1960 and clinched the title with a win. I'd been going on the Turf for around 18 months by then but not regularly because my mum always 'put her foot down' if there was likely to be a bigger gate than usual, especially if we played Everton. No chance of me going to Maine Rd. then and as I've mentioned on here before( and I love repeating it) my dad went out around 9pm and came back in 15 or so minutes later to tell me we'd won, we were champions. Went to bed then a very happy young schoolboy. Younger posters won't understand how there was little or no coverage of such an important game but then that was the norm. Five days later, on a very warm Saturday afternoon the 'highlight' of the season was live on tv. The FA Cup Final between Wolves and Blackburn. The day before that the wedding of Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstromg- Jones was screened live on telly and we all had a day off for that one too. A damned fine week if I might say so.

I was somewhere in the crowd with my dad on the right hand side of that picture (under the old Kippax stand). We managed to get through the turnstiles moments before a big fat police sergeant came running down the concourse waving his arms shouting at the turnstile operators to close all the gates, and leaving God knows how many locked outside.
