Defence

Post by Poulton-le-Claret » Sun Dec 29, 2024 10:01 pm

We go into 2025 still in single figures for goals conceded this season.

Only 9 goals against in 24 games.

Best defensive record in Europe apparently. And the best defensive record for over 100 years.

Considering the age of the defence, that is phenomenal.

It's an unbelievable record. We've got some top defenders in Egan-Riley and Esteve, but the shape of the team in and out of possession is a masterclass in being solid.

It’s absolutely brilliant. Huge credit to Parker and the team.

Generally a team with the best defence will win the league or be right up there so long may it continue.

Superb. Replicate that in the first 5 months of 2025 and we're up.

Esteve covers for CJ and CJ covers for Esteve - those two have a great understanding
Esteve - 22 years old
CJ - 21 years old
Humphreys - 21 years old

Unreal given their ages

Not to get too carried away.....but teams are struggling to get near us now. We look like a bigger boxer with a longer jab. Looks repeatable, bodes well when we get creative options back / if we sign that killer up front.

Yes, our defence made a few individual errors last night but were still able to keep the ball out of the net, so job done.

Currently conceding fewer goals per game than Chelsea’s 04/05 title winners under Mourinho who conceded 15 all season (the best ever).

Celtic have conceded 4 in 18. The only team I can find that could quibble with that stat.

It's the speed of recovery that amazes me. They do make mistakes but it's the way they get back to cover one another that is so impressive. Last night when JT had his brain freeze, CJ was back close to the goal line to make a block in super fast time.

Our defence is amazing, but one of the things that really stood out to me was if we were in the prem at least 2-3 of them mistakes would have been punished.

Boro really did waste some golden mistakes.

It's not just our defenders, the whole team should get credit for our meanness. That has been clearly in evident in the last two matches.

Is it better than Brown's defence 1947 (I think it might have been)?

Celtic only conceded 4 in 18 games.
Inter 12 in 22

Burnley 9 in 24

Championship record is 29 conceded by West Brom (2001/2)

To add a little perspective, Celtic don’t actually play anyone capable of scoring against them, so although it may appear on paper to be a feat of defensive skill and organisation, it’s clearly not.

Quite rightly we hear a lot about Egan Riley & Esteve who have both been superb. Lets not forget Humphrey's ability to defend. He has been superb in the last half dozen games, making some brilliant tackles and clearances. Yesterday he kept Ben Oakes very quiet, as he did in the first game recently v Borough. This right winger has been tormenting defenders all season

I didn’t think I’d ever see a Burnley team match the defensive shrewdness of a well drilled Dyche team - they were a pleasure to watch, but Parker’s lads are looking really well organised. Still have to do it at the next level tho, which is where some of the Dyche teams best showings were delivered.

Celtic conceded 3 tonight

I think that now puts our defensive record (goals per game) as the best in Europe (or at least I can't find anyone with a better record)

Leeds conceded as many goals today as Burnley have since the first week of November. It's not always pretty, but it's still impressive.
