The non-penalty on Flemming

Post by ecc » Sat Jan 04, 2025 2:47 pm

How did Flemming end up being ajudged to have fouled the marker when the Rover was pulling his shirt off in the box?

The ref was abysmal for both sides, embarrassing from the PGMOL to stick him in for that game

Ref didn't have the bottle to give a penalty against the home team, had to make a decision though so the cop out is to give a freekick the other way so the Burnley players then have to get back to defend and can't hassle him as much.

And, if he gives it, he would have to send Batth off. Totally bottled it.

Sarimento was pulling one of their players which is what the ref blew for

Would VAR have got involved, had it been available?

Genuinely don't know.

Obviously it should it these circumstances but would it have done?

Depends on who was on VAR and whether they'd finished nattering and finished their coffee. I can never take the people who run VAR seriously.

Game was too big for the ref, he missed loads for both sides. Laurent could easily have seen red, Cantwell could have been booked 47 times in the first half alone. PGMOL need to do better

I understand refs not giving the pen there but at the same time a foul the other way is not good. No Burnley player committed a foul so not good. The non bookings were understandable but he left it too long, he will learn but VAR would have helped him. Hey ho I am not that bothered as I an just having a pint of Smug in the Gloaters Arms!😂

I would love to ask Howard Webb or someone at the FA how that is a Blackburn free kick, but I know they will just come out with the “contact with consequence” boll@cks that actually doesn’t mean anything and actually isn’t said once in the laws of the game.
Refereeing seems like a racket. No consistency, awful decisions and making up laws and rules to please them and cover themselves. And it only seems to be getting worse.

Because the ref blew for a foul by Flemming. Did you not know it is an offence to put your shirt in an opponents hand and make him appear pull it and making it look as if you are dragged to the ground.
You need to read the rule book on what constitutes a foul when playing WR positive football team (Wassermann Reaction-look it up).

There was a similar event at Leeds a few years back. Meslier cleaned out Mee for a clear penalty and Barnes smashed the rebound home. The ref gave a foul to Leeds. Totally baffling but very similar to the clear foul on Flemming today. Perhaps refs are unofficially taught to do this when it's a potentially contentious decision, in a big match.

Shocking refereeing. I don't know who he was but it came across that the game was too big for him. Surprised our lads still had shirts to play in by the end.

Absolutely extraordinary

At the time it looked like a blatant penalty
On further viewing, you can see the ref had an even better view , and is less than 10yds away, and gets it barn door wrong

To see that as a foul by Flemming tells you everything you need to know about the ref's competence. Like most refs this season, he just wasn't good enough.

I can forgive making genuine mistakes. But that's not a genuine error. You can't give that decision without wanting to preemptively penalise Burnley

They’re clearly desperate to get their hands on a Burnley shirt - at one point in the second half a Blackburn player fully removed Cullen’s shirt while tussling for a corner!

Wouldn't it have been an early Batth for Danny, too? Already on a yellow. So the ref saved himself from two big decisions with that one.

I'm not sure how to interpret your post.

I've just looked up Wassermann Reaction and you've lost me there.

The Wasserman Reaction (WR) was a test for syphilis and if you were WR positive it meant you had or had had active syphilis which is a venereal disease that has three phases, if untreated and can take tens of years to cause death. At all stages treatment cures the disease but if you are in stage 3 then quite of few of your organs like brain and heart will have been damaged beyond repair. I found it amusing that the "crudeness" of comments over many years about horses and incest, Rovers should unwittingly be positive for WR as emblazoned on their shirts-and felt I should point it out-but as you can see it has died a death

The current VAR situation is particularly disadvantageous to teams like Burnley:
When in the Championship (without VAR) we are a club who would likely see an overall benefit, being a 'footballing' side with lots (relative to our opponents) of fast, skilful players who their defenders struggle to deal with; those shirt-tugs are becoming a regular thing. However, when we get promoted back to the EPL, the opposite becomes true and we're the ones more often struggling to keep pace with the opposition, but doing so under VAR's all-seeing eye.
