Harwood-Bellis

Post by Goliath » Sat Jan 04, 2025 11:27 pm

Just watched an absolute disaster class from him on MOTD. Thank God we didn't spend 20 million on him, it must be one of the worst highlight reels I've ever seen.

We were saying similar things about him as we are Egan-Riley. The Prem is a big step and Southampton are hardly solid.

Thought THB was ok, just a bit too slow.

He was great and passionate for us in the promotion season. MOTD highlighted him in 2 or 3 of the Brenteford goals as slow, ponderous and even disinterested. Charlie Taylor who came on after HT looked very similar. Southampton look doomed...

In hindsight, he's made the wrong move going to Saints
Like the rest of them, he's looked shakey at times and out of his depth
He has put in the odd good appearance but he will need to move to a more stable PL club than saints

Loved THB for us, mainly because it was such a novelty having a centre back playing in that manner with his distribution. I have to say (and I don’t THINK this is recency bias…), CJ has an even greater passing range in my opinion, and is certainly a better defender at this level.

He’s played for England recently and hasn’t turned into a crap defender ,put him back in our present side and he look great again ,put VVD in the Saints side and even he would look crap.

One thing VK got right he is not Premier league standard and as a top defender Vinnie recognised this.

Certainly not his best performance but the other defenders alongside him didn’t help him. Taylor mentioned coming on, I hadn’t even spotted that.

Like a lot of our players last year, hung out to dry by a terrible managerial setup.

He’s a 22 year old playing in one of the worst ever Premier League sides.

He’ll be fine and go on to have a good career in the top flight.

Kompany got this spot on, I’m afraid.

Still, I’ll be forever grateful to THB for his service here and hope this season isn’t too damaging for his career.

The other thing is, as part of the England set-up he’ll almost certainly get a move from Southampton in summer so they won’t have wasted their money.

Does he look any different than Beyer or Ekdal did in the Premier League?

Be careful what you wish for. Granted Southampton are particularly poor, but I'm not sure we would be a great deal better with our current squad.

Tbf that's my current thinking. Worried if we go up we'd be just as bad. Southampton might not even break Derbys record the way its looking.

I'd need to check the rules but I think we'd be allowed to sign new players.

Its signing the right players! You'd like to think Pace has learnt some lessons from the ****show of summer 2023.

I watched MOTD too and Harwood-Bellis, along with others had a complete car crash of a performance. The 'pundits' said it was the worst ever Premier league performance

I liked THB when he was here but I did think he tended to dwell on the ball too much and I think we were right to baulk at the fee City wanted. Tough day yesterday but that team seems a bit of a basket case at the moment.

Beyer was horrendous against Spurs, gave up and actually asked to be subbed which I’ve never seen before.

I think in all fairness, the way we approached games under Kompany in the PL made our players look poor. The difference we are seeing in Trafford speaks volumes for me. A less 'open' tactical approach and maybe, just maybe, we could have earned a handful draws to drag ourselves over the line. Not guaranteed, granted, but we may have had a chance.

THB was and is young and learning. CJ has been learning his trade, at a lower level, and blossomed.

Agree his passing is superb.

Give the guy a break
The MOTD comms guy covering their match yesterday said Roy Keane was going to be his future father in law
No wonder his mind might not be fully focused on his game at the moment with that worry on his mind

Not seen the highlights yet from that match, but from what I have seen he has been a shining light in a bad side. Every player can have a crap game in a unorganised team. Esteve didn’t stand out in our mess last year. But proves once you get of organisation he can be class. I love thb still an excellent player I believe.

Made an unbelievable block during the game.
He’s played for England (and scored) only a few months ago.

He was great for Burnley and a major part of our promotion on and off the field. He’s a natural leader and captain too.

He’s playing in a very poor side who in Russell Martin had a manager with even more naive and ridiculous tactics than VK. Looks like the new manager is no better - though may be hamstrung by the existing squad he has inherited and the players Martin brought in.

Why anyone would want to start a thread like this about a player who clearly loved his time at Burnley and contributed so much to promotion I have no idea. I’d much rather have spent £20m on him him than a lot of the players we signed last season.

No, I meant Russell Martin did the same thing to him that Kompany did to e.g. Trafford and O'Shea
