Great performance. McDermott especially could slot straight in. Well done lads

Completely agree with the OP and Tony. I love seeing a youth player come through.

Both were outstanding. Nothing to draw between them and to say they put those performances in together and not alongside an experienced partner was the most impressive thing for me.

I was all up for Shelvey in the week but part of me hopes we give these lads a go now.

Missed the game due to work today and I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to see these lads in action. If anyone can find some highlights and send a link in I’d appreciate that very much .

Great to hear the comments about them both, I like the look of McDermott against Wolves in the cup and the fact that Bauress took his chance in the side after so long out is superb

Both had excellent debuts. McDermott twice gave away free kicks near the 18yd box, both from similar positions, within a couple of minutes of each other. Each time he ran into the back of a Reading player, who he had his back to goal. I saw it as a raw keenness to pressure the opposition player. But as he will no doubt learn, players go down, as soon as they’re touched. He can’t afford to give away needless free kicks in dangerous areas.

Absolutely love it when a youngster breaks through to the first team, we don’t have a great record but in fairness we are have spent the best part of the last 15 years in the worlds toughest leagues with a tiny youth budget.

How many former clarets youth team players are knocking around in the football league these days? Dunne? O’Neil? Or did we pick them up later when they were 18/19?
Was Thomas one as well. I think he is/was at Coventry

Yes Bobby Thomas came to us from Crewe youth having been at Everton and was 16/17 when he signed for us in 2017/18 and was with us until signing for Coventry in 2023

We bought McDermott from Port Vale when he was 17. He’d already made his senior debut there.

Bauress has come right through the academy from primary school age.

I wonder if the performance of these two youngsters might make us re-think the need to bring Shelvey in?

They both played well today, thought Bauress had a good range of passing and tried the little outside of the boot pass a few times.

Under pressure they lost their composure a bit but that will come with some game time and stepping up. A L1 loan would be perfect for both guys

Great debuts from both. There was a noticeable drop off in quality and effectiveness from the 3 Josh’s though which you would expect, so calls for them to be involved in the Championship seem premature to me. Some first team experience at league one level would seem like the obvious next step.

Finally a great post about letting the two young lads go and play league 1 or 2 football, can’t believe the amount of fans suggesting after one cup game that they should be fully part of the first fold this season

Understand that but also there is a case for a trimming of the high earners that are not going to get a game and taking up space in a bloated squad. Perhaps it would be more useful to let these lads have that space and experience and get minutes in cup games and off the bench if/when we are comfortable in games.

Part of we wishes Flemming didn't get those winning goals so we could have seen the two young lads play in the replay at the Turf. Flemming getting more goals and confidence is maybe a bit more important though so overall think winning the game outright was best.

Which high earning central midfield players do we need to trim? As far as I can see the only place we need to trim players from is at centre back.

Say we only have one more cup game this season, they are then left with no minutes, whereas consistent minutes in league one or two would be great.

Reading were extremely poor yesterday and if they are supposed to be one of the better teams in league one then the gap between league one and the championship is bigger than I thought

It would of gone to penalties if Flemming didn’t score, there are no replays

Both have done no more than start one game but have done enough to deserve more. Nothing I enjoy more than seeing young players breaking into the first team.

That path to the first team is an interesting one. What's the best route for their development? Are the youngsters really going to get many opportunities without injury to Cullen, Brownhill or Laurent?

They have both put themselves in the shop window for a loan to League One, well done to them both.

Championship experience at lower level...especially in a relegation scrap at the likes of Plymouth/Pompey/Oxford would tell us more.
Makeweight in a deal for the Plymouth striker possibly?.

Great to see. Sometimes in football for young lads it's just about right time and right place. One poster last week was getting stick for suggesting 1 or 2 of our U21's could provide backup for the remainder of the season. Saturday is a small indicator that they are capable and we don't need a squad over-filling with senior pros blocking the pathway of the younger players.

Will they get anywhere near League 1, though?
And I'm struggling to remember any of our loans out coming back better than they went out.

Adam Phillips and Bobby Thomas both had loans out to League Two before moving up to League One. Dodgson went to Rochdale in League Two then Barnsley in League One. I don't know if the Scottish Prem is considered a higher level than League One but he's back there again although Boston are not in the same position Barnsley were in the league. Dodgson is still only 21 but playing first team football in the EFL and SPL will have done him no harm.

It seems that we really struggle to get players into League One never mind the bottom end of the Championship. Look at Mellon who's had to settle for going back to League Two.

We’re surely more likely to loan McDermott out than Bauress. If Jay gets injured, we’ll need an academy option for the bench won’t we?

Just thinking about it. Parker really had a lot of faith in Bauress and McDermott. He only had Laurent on the bench if he wasn't happy with the way things were going.

It's pretty impressive that Parker can make 11 changes and still get a result. How many times did we fail to win in cup games where Dyche made significant changes to the starting 11?

More likely it will be League Two loans - we’ve found it difficult getting players loans at decent clubs.

Found my self constantly pondering that problem on Saturday. I am hoping that game might’ve helped get interest from higher up the pyramid.

They didn’t look out of place at league one level at all in my opinion.

Seen an accy fan saying they should take Bauress on loan

Interesting that these two were the ones who got the opportunity in the cup but neither went out on loan.

They looked ready for first team action somewhere in the EFL.

Hope another 6 months with our U21s doesn’t stall their development.

Wonder if they're training with the first team regularly, which is stretching their improvement more.

Course it might, but you’d think they need to be playing first team football soon. The U21s appear to be battering every team they play now, which suggests a lot of those loads are operating way below their current level.
