One of the great, instinctive strikers in post war English football. RIP Denis, fantastic goal scorer and a real character in the game.

These days, the word "great" is overused, usually applied to people, things and situations that patently aren't.
Denis Law was a true great.
RIP Denis - you were an absolute pleasure to watch play.

If memory serves he could jump higher than anyone else of his era, spring loaded legs  Also one of the few who played for both Citeh and Utd.

Our old groundsman gave him the thumbs up in his book. Decent, humble bloke. And a terrific footballer. That time there was no celebration after scoring against United... class.

When we won the league at Man city (1959/60) Denis Law was playing against us. I can remember my Dad saying I hope he doesn't score. 🙂

He was a really good player and was one of the best strikers. I remember a game in the sixties when we were playing well against man utd but couldn't score. He had one chance near the end of the game and scored to get the win. RIP

When you were a kid in the 60s, there was 3 absolute legends. Best, Law and Charlton. Leeds had good teams; Liverpool had good teams; Arsenal started to come good, but no team had this triumvirate. Best was like a whippet, skilful, fast and unbelievably tough. Charlton was just imperious. Gliding through defences with an unstoppable shot. But then came Denis. Fiery, aggressive, fantastic in the air at 5ft 9in, athletic and agile.
As a kid, you couldn't be Best or Charlton, they couldn't be copied. But you could try diving headers, overhead kicks, clever flicks, hold your sleeves with your thumbs, head butt someone, and score a tap in. Because that was Denis Law, the Lawman.
There was no one like him before, and no one like him since.
The King!

You don't need to explain yourself, Trevor. It was obvious what you meant. He was definitely deadly in the box. One of the greatest strikers ever.
RIP, Denis.

Denis Law, known as the King.
In the 60s, when coming back to Burnley from a London match, the Utd team were on the same train. Denis passed us and went into the toilet. Some of us stood outside the toilet door and sang the "the King is on the throne, e I addio the King is on the throne". He saw the funny side of it, when came out.

I met him at an after-dinner speaker event at the Turf back in the early 90s. Afterwards, he made time for those who wanted to chat with him on a one-to-one basis.

As a person, I met him twice, once when organising a dinner that he was speaking at. Nothing but good words to say about him in that respect.

But as a player, as a goalscorer, one of the all time greats. Had that bit of nastiness about him that often landed him in trouble, but simply a phenomenal player in front of goal. How blessed were we in that era with Law at United, Jimmy Greaves at Spurs and of course our own Willie Irvine.

I was literally just a few yards from the turnstiles last night when a Sky alert on my phone gave me the sad news of his passing. For those of us of a certain age, it really is sad when one of the greats leaves us.

I saw him play a fair few times, my clearest memory is from first half of 1971 whilst temporarily living in London. Went on a lot of games with mates watching their teams (and dragged them on to Clarets games).
Crystal Palace v Man U with a red supporter, dusty hard pitch in early spring, ended 3-5 with Denis Law scoring a HT (Belfast boy got the other 2). One of Law's goals was a (not clean) overhead kick right in front of us, Willie Morgan played in the game too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AswyLE ... l=gr8footy

I have a (maybe incorrect) memory of seeing him for the first time in some sort of friendly game at TM when he played for Huddersfield or had just been transferred for big money to City. Gordon Banks definitely played in that game, right in front of me when I was at the front of Bee Hole end. Must've been 59/60/61 era.

RIP Scottish Lawman who gave much pleasure to many.

Very sad news. For those of us on here in our sixties or more Denis Law passing away feels like another piece of football's halycon days is taken away from us.

He quite clearly loved playing football. A very talented player but also a rascal.

Denis Law was, I believe, loved by all football fans irrespective of the club they supported.

RIP Flower of Scotland

I remember going to an evening in Peterborough to hear Dennis speak. I went up to see him afterwards and mentioned I was a Claret. We talked about Burnley for a few minutes and then I reminded him of our last game in winning the First Division title at Maine Rd in 1969. He said he remembered the game and therefore I asked him about a missed opportunity he had to equalise for City. He grinned and said “Nobody wanted Wolves to win the title”. I appreciated his grin as he spoke but I am still not sure whether he was telling the truth or just joking along with me.
RIP Dennis - you were a great player and person and you will be missed by many.

There's the well-told story of Denis Law golfing somewhere in Manchester on the day of the 1966 World Cup Final. After finishing the game, he was told England had won the World Cup ....as a proud Scotsman he replied "you've just ruined my day"!!

I seem to remember him going back to Man City on leaving Utd only to score against his former club and send them down to the second division. This was in the seventies. Not only did he not celebrate but looked most upset about what he’d just done.

RIP

I remember him at Turf Moor c1970-71 and think he scored both in a 2-0 win (night match). I remember him
Scoring with a flashing header at Cricket Field end. RIP Denis
