Results from this weekend in January 1992
So we’re talking the final season of divisions 1-4, before moving to the Premier League era, six months on.
Burnley were in Division 4, doing well, but still A LOT of games away from a promotion.
Burnley beat Gillingham in front of just under 9000 fans.
When you look at the attendances across the divisions that day (January 18th 1992), Burnley really stood out.
Highest attendance in Division 4 by over 2500!
Higher attendance than every game in Division 3, apart from Stoke, who had 10,800.
Higher gate than four teams in Division 2 and not many less than Bristol City and Ipswich attendances.
A higher attendance than Wimbledon in the 1st Division, which whilst we know they historically had poor crowds around that time, it’s worth noting, they were playing Chelsea.
Makes you very proud to be a Burnley fan. Our nucleus of dedicated fans never ceases to amaze me.
UTC
Anyway, match highlights below taken from ‘Burnley Are Back’ with Clive Tyldesley calling the action. This was the match that Mike Conroy bagged a hat trick and earlier, Ian Measham was ‘Arriving like an express train!’
Should have been a cricket score!!

I remember being at that game. Harvey Lim in goal for Gillingham and had a bit of a mare.

One of those ‘memorable’ faces from that campaign
Up there with Bamber, Preece, Quow and Whitehurst!

I was about to say the same lol, exciting times, similar feeling to the Kompany Championship season, we felt we could beat anybody.agreenwood wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 11:19 pmI remember being at that game. Harvey Lim in goal for Gillingham and had a bit of a mare.
Was that Adie Randall's first goal for us?

When you look at those attendances it shows what a great job Sky and the Premier League did in transforming and popularising football in this country

I love the Newcastle/Charlton match. Newcastle three nil up, Charlton get back to three-three and Newcastle give away an own goal in the ninetieth minute!!

Found the highlights. I always forget how direct we were under Mullen.

Great assist by John Francis for the 3rd goal

The standard was shocking, but it's up there for my most entertaining seasons.

I believe that was the first season that the law was changed so the keeper couldn't
pick up a back-pass. (Think it was that season anyway.)
I remember how weird it seemed.

His missus seemed to be on the Radio Lancs phone-in every week!
Though as you have pointed out he was at Stockport, that must have been when he was at Bloomfield.

He signed for Stockport in December 1991, so he was at Wrexham when we beat them 6-2.
Edit: Just checked, and yes he did score for Wrexham against us in the 6-2 win.

He wasn’t fully part of the campaign.
The name I’d add is Phil Stant

The funny thing here is, despite me saying he was a face you remember from that era, he then signed for Stockport AND he even bloody scored! Show above in Division 3!!!

Phil Stant. Shudder.
Who was the more technical player in that team, was it Wilkinson?

Pretty certain that was 6-7 months later in 1992/93ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 8:23 amI believe that was the first season that the law was changed so the keeper couldn't

Leeds United won the first division and were fantastic at passing the ball back to Lucik, who would then pick it up and go long to Lee Chapman. When the Premier League started, they simply couldn’t cope with it and they got caught out time and time again: they had a really poor first season back I recall.

Brentford, Bournemouth and Fulham in Division 3.
Isn't it great (well more interesting anyway) to follow an up and down team so that you can appreciate the highs when they come!

Re: Results from this weekend in January 1992
Andy Flounders, bloody hell!
I always seem to remember a lot of keepers from that season. Fat Ian Hesford at Maidstone, Jason Pearcey, Dean Kiely. Chris Marples played his only game for Scunthorpe against us and got sent off for slapping Conroy.
Pretty sure Nathan Blake scored for Cardiff against us and Gary Bull bagged a hatful that season for Barnet. Trevor Sinclair was at Blackpool.
Good season for name fans as well, the aforementioned Flounders, Lim and Trevor Quow; Cohen Griffith was decent. Andy Gouck an odd one also.
Sublime season all round.

It was a great season for him, and us too, massively so and one of the best, at least for me. It didn't quite work out for him after we went up to D2 (the old D3). Did he fall out with JM?

Re: Results from this weekend in January 1992
I wonder if Dean Kiely has climbed out of the back of the York net yet?
Re: Results from this weekend in January 1992
He was found a touch wanting a level higher. Not quick enough. I think any half decent striker would have scored 20+ in that team that season.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 12:01 pmIt was a great season for him, and us too, massively so and one of the best, at least for me. But not to take things away from ~Conroy - he had a really good season in that Championship winning team and he was a favourite of mine at the time.

Back in the days we had to kick off about 7am at Scunthorpe.

Stant was a nasty piece of work. He left one on Pender away at Mansfield. I mentioned this in a twitter conversation with Steve Davis who was surprised as he said Pender was absolute nails and not many would done that to him. Read Stant’s book, it’s a very good read including his time in the Falklands.dougcollins wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 9:42 amPhil Stant. Shudder.

The Wrexham player who I got confused with Preece is Chris Armstrong however on reflection it was the season before when we won 4-2. Armstrong really stood out and went on to have a decent career.agreenwood wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 9:30 amHe signed for Stockport in December 1991, so he was at Wrexham when we beat them 6-2.

I would have been at that game. Aged 15!!
I remember we always used to say they under declared the gates too. I’m sure there might have been more on than that.
