I've been told you will need ID to enter most bars in the city centre if you're on a night out/staying over.
No matter how old you look.

I was talking to a lad that has lived down there for 15yrs from Padiham. A group of us 40/50/60s were planning a stop over in the centre, he just warned us we would all need ID to get in pubs on a night out. They're very strict about it apparently.

Few recommendations as been here for 20 years.
Outside-in food court - has lots of different street food in a large hall with a decent bar.
King St tavern - great BBQ place, just down the road from the above.
Rapscallions Southsea if you love Rum, near the beach and bar area with lots of other bars/ food options.
Staggeringly Good Brewery- round the corner from the stadium, not sure on policy for away fans but great reviews.
Same for The Brewers Tap, smaller but very good.

Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
I'll defer to PompeyClarets knowledge from living there, but a few things to note as a regular visitor:
Pompey is a really compact/congested city, it's an island so there's very little space. As a result it's full of rows of terraced housing, particularly around Fratton Park. This, in return, puts parking as an absolute premium across the city. If driving, I'd recommend using one of the pre-book parking apps to find a space. There's a Big-Asda which uses 'just park' which might be useful.
Pubs- Not near the ground, but plenty of bars in Southsea, nice area down the seafront and I also recommend a visit to Rapscallions rum bar as mentioned.
If you arrive early enough I'd suggest trying to head down to 'Old Portsmouth' where theres a couple of nice pubs where you can sit outside and watch the ships enter the dockyard. You can get the train from there (Portsmouth Harbour) to Fratton as well...

Has anyone experienced catching the train back from Pompey on a Saturday after a game? I've got a tight train connection between London Waterloo and St Pancras - but all depends on being able to catch a train from Fratton station after the match.
I expect lots of people will try and catch the same couple of trains but hopefully we can all get on....

Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
Train station is only half a mile or so away, and trains are fairly frequent with plenty of coaches. No engineering work planned either, which is a bonus. Depends how tight your connection is. Worth noting the away end is the furthest away from the station, so you'd be at the back of the line.MattBFC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 3:32 pmHas anyone experienced catching the train back from Pompey on a Saturday after a game? Waterloo trains are faster than Victoria, but both go via Havant just outside Pompey if you want to escape Fratton station.
Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
Thanks.
There is lots of engineering works on way home unfortunately - I'm trying to get back to York and have a 4 hour marathon via Sheffield rather than the usual 2. Only realised this after match ticket and hotel booked!

Do you know if it's easy to get away from the big Asda after the game? I would rather have a 15-20 minute walk and have a good route out of the city than park near to the ground.
Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
Anyone know of anywhere to park that I can get away from easily. Don’t mind parking in a residential area and walking around half hour
Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
Ive been reading today that when the platform at Fratton gets full the station entrance is closed by the police, causing fans to miss their train to London.
In one account that I read from a Peterborough fan he said that they had been unable to get a train to London after their game until 6.30pm, all because of the shear number of people queing outside Fratton station.
As mentioned in another post the away end is on the opposite side of the ground from the station.
I believe it is around a 15 minute walk.
We are hoping to catch the 5.19pm train to London Waterloo and so will probably need to leave before full time to ensure we get inside the station.

Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
One option is to park in the Milton area of town. Hayling avenue for on street parking with no restrictions. Its off the Eastern road and 10-15 minute walk to the ground and there's a school that charges £5
The Eastern Road (A2030) is one of the 3 roads out of the city and connects with the M27/A27. It runs on the edge of the city and is usually less congested than going through the centre. Should be a decent getaway and it's on the correct side of the ground for the away (Milton) end. I'd probably see if you can book one somebody's drive on that area.
Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
By Train:
The nearest train station to Fratton Park are Fratton this is a short walk to the ground of around 10 minutes.
Where to drink
The Good Companion, Velder Avenue is recommended and popular with away supporters.
Staggeringly Good, Rodney Road will have a mix of home and away supporters (Micro Brewery)

It'll be busy... it always is and you're right in the centre of the city. But, you're not far there from the start of the M275 which gets you straight out of town.Anonymous Claret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 4:39 pmThanks TP.

Other option might be parking around Milton (my post above)
Cheers

It was an evening away game at Fratton that I first saw someone in an off licence in their dressing gown.
I never thought it was going to become nationally commonplace.

Got here this evening, been to a couple of pubs around the dockyard area.. didn't get asked for ID.
Asked around, apparently the good companion is sh!t.
Been advised what Transpennine said, have a few drinks around the harbour and get the 10 minute train to fratton.

Setting off early tomorrow morning and staying at the Premier Inn near the Dockyard tomorrow night so the train from the harbour looks to be a good option but perhaps an Uber back rather than the fight for the platform at Fratton. The Staggeringly Good Brewery does tempt me though being a craft ale fan and away fans are welcome in there.

Re: General Info - Portsmouth (a)
Having been here tonight, Southsea seems to have a good amount of pubs. We've been to the Eastney Tavern and Sir Loin of Beef which were both great.
Natty's Jerk in the centre won the national award for no.1 restaurant on Uber Eats this/last year and can confirm it's worth the award if that's your type of thing.
For brewery goers, as posted above, we'll be heading to Staggeringly Good Brewery at some point tomorrow. Near the ground. I'd also look out for beers by Makemake if its on in a pub that you find yourself at.
I got a visitor parking permit through family but can see it being very hard to park around here otherwise.

Spice Island and The 'Still & West' in old Portsmouth/ harbour area are decent. Good food/ale and can sit outside with nice views of the harbour ( if boats & beer are your kinda thing)Wembley09 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 8:03 pmGot here this evening, been to a couple of pubs around the dockyard area.. didn't get asked for ID.

Does anyone have a ‘standing ticket’ (if they exist), which they’d want to swap for a ‘strictly no standing ticket’!?
Happy to swap at the ground either inside or out.
