January Transfer Window Rumours
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
I love Ashley Barnes. but I don’t quite understand the thought process of bringing him in to let Jay go.

Luckily we are quite a lot more successful these days so we don't have these mythical Orient type games to save the club

So the Orient game was a myth? That takes the biscuit.Goliath wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 4:54 pmJust like Jay played his heart out for us last season when we were getting absolutely battered by Arsenal etc. He was the one showing fight.

Hopefully a replacement is sorted then

Good luck Jay. Thanks for everything. He’s not really up to the championship anymore.

A quite reliable source i've seen today has said we have a few potentials, with a couple awaiting terms
He's never been wrong with stuff yet - quite in with the club

No I meant that it has mythological status. Possibly used incorrect terminology there

Is he going to do a Denis Law and Wrexham come up and we stay down and he gets a pen in the last minute against us? :

Given that he was under contract and that Wrexham arent exactly shy about letting folk know about their financial good fortune, I certainly hope we did.Hedontplayforyou wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 6:21 pmWether we did actually get a fee or not I don’t know but if we did, for a player of Jays age at this level of football to get a fee is pretty decent.

Letting Jay go helps to reduce the overall age of the squad so that in post match interviews Scott can still say that he’s working with a very young group of players.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
It actually makes more sense to me now.
Assuming we knew Jay wanted to play more/had offers on the table, we maybe moved ahead of that to bring in an experienced replacement for the bench.
You can only imagine this is supporting Jays wishes given it’s a permanent move.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
I suppose if this allows us to bring in a forward player who can stretch the game and give us a bit more of a 6 yard box threat, then letting Jay go makes cold hard sense, even if it is a shame to let a player go who is so integral to the club and its link to the town. The way Parker appears to want to use Flemming is very similar to the sort of role Jay can play these days, so in a sense we signed his replacement in the summer. We also have Foster who adds some power, and if Barnes has been signed to offer anything, it's a physical target man threat who can fix defenders and win an arm wrestle, and so if we have space for a 4th striker its probably someone more in the Tella type mould than Rodriguez. It will free up some wages too.
But Jay's amongst the greats of the football club. That goal at Old Trafford will live forever. Quite possibly one day, he'll be back at Burnley in some capacity or other.

Absolutely one of the greats. Shame he couldn’t sign off with a promotion but you would suspect it means a younger striker is to sign.claretspice wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 8:23 pmI suppose if this allows us to bring in a forward player who can stretch the game and give us a bit more of a 6 yard box threat, then letting Jay go makes cold hard sense, even if it is a shame to let a player go who is so integral to the club and its link to the town. A true modern day great of the club in my opinion is our Jay! No doubt he has had a terrific career and if it wasn’t for that horrific knee injury whilst at Saints when he was flying, I suspect he may have had a chance at a bigger club. If memory serves I think he may have missed the England boat that year he got injured….

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Edwards (Newcastle’s link): at £8m seems really good business depending on attitude, he has had disciplinary issues this season but may be linked with trying to engineer a move. So I can see why we would be all over that.
Jay: whether he is “up to it” now is irrelevant. He is a club legend, you don’t stand in their way needing games at 35yo, we wish him all the best, and I suspect this has been rumbling for weeks and we signed Barmes back to give that motivational edge to the dressing room instead of Jay.
I feel sure some major business will be done by Monday night.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
I think those "not getting the love in" for JRod are missing something. How many homegrown burnley lads start their career with us, and then go on to have a very good Premier league career - to the point where they get an England call up. But for serious injury that career both domestically and perhaps internationally would've been even better.
We should be very proud of that and him besides the things he achieved in claret and blue.
