Hannibal

Post by ElectroClaret » Sat Feb 08, 2025 5:10 pm

Arguably his best performance for us today, as someone mentioned on the match thread, boundless energy and was a good all round display from him.

Superb today. Needs more calmness and quality in the final third, although he did very well for the goal.

I thought he was the best player on the pitch today. Finally got to see him in a midfield two and he didn’t disappoint. You’ve got to wonder why he’s not been played there before now this season. All the usual energy and tenacity, but with technical skill, drawing fouls, playing on the half turn, ball carrying… I’d go with him and Cullen in there on Tuesday.

He's a good YOUNG player no doubt, gets himself into some great situations but gets caught in two minds, that will sort itself out hopefully the more he plays.

Agree. You really have to wonder how they reach some of the decisions at times. That was an outstanding tackle and unbelievably also got a yellow for it.

He’s a great signing and a great player.

Ticks all the boxes for the type of player we should be signing -young, potential, effort, bags of talent etc.

We’ll definitely make good money on him.

I was so critical of him after his red card and disappointed he had let his team & fans down.

Today, he was exceptional. I'm now thinking the red card may have been a great learning curve for him and, if he's taken it on board, then we will benefit from it long term.

There is a fantastic player there and if Parker can keep him in check he'll add so much to us.

That was me, not because he isn’t a good player, but because I don’t want players playing for us who deliberately go to injure other players. Just my opinion but fair play to him parker has managed it well and he has come back and gave a superb performance today. Water under the bridge now for me.

I like how he carried on running, leaving 3 Southampton players standing around, which put him in the perfect position for the pass.

As I said on the match thread where does he get his energy from, it's none stop in that free roll. There were times when we were pressing high it appeared that there was two of him

He ( literally) ran the game yesterday imo

Outstanding yesterday and the previous game.
Away from home against decent opposition I'd love to see Cullen and Shelvey deeper with Hannibal just in front in a free role. The future without Brownhill suddenly looks bright

Especially impressed by how well he controlled his temper. Hannibal took a lot of late tackles and sly digs today, some no doubt specifically delivered to wind him up and did far better at rising above them.

Have we ever played him and Brownhill together with Cullen behind. There'd be a lot of energy in that midfield and Hannibal's far superior ability to get on the ball than Laurent should mean we also have better control.

With Edwards, Barnes and Foster infront of them that is an absolute nightmare of a team to play against at this level in nearly every way possibly.

That midfield 3 was played for most of the early season. Think Blackburn home and PNE home, Hull away, and more.

Was Hannibal not more as a 10 then with Brownhill slightly deeper. I remember against Blackburn especially he started really high, basically as a second striker at times.

I think it was a misconception of our system that Hannibal was ever a ‘10’. It was always a 4-3-3 in possession with Brownhill & Him alongside & ahead of Cullen, but 4-4-2 out of possession, with him leading the press hence a higher starting position at times. He did play as a second striker against Oxford though with Flemming in more of a 4-4-2/4-2-4.

I suppose its how you define the roles, not always straight forward because they change in and out of possession. I'm sure Hannibal was higher than Brownhill though, I'd prefer that to swap with Brownhill the one pressing as one of a front two out of possession.

Hannibal has the energy and workrate that we lack when he isn't in the team. If he can control his temper and impetuousness then he could be a star player for us.

You would be right it was more of a 4-2–3-1 with Hannibal usually receiving in front of the ball in them days.

Where yesterday he was receiving behind the ball in the main or at least in line.

You are correct though out of possession formation is 4-4-2 mid block with the forwards usually blocking the central lane and the wingers either tucking in and allowing outside only.

Hannibal is much better behind running into the ball but he has been utilises because of his energy and ability to play on the half higher up.

Difference ebreeen Hannibal and Laurent is Hannibal can vacant because of his natural enthusiasm whilst Laurent is much more sit in and step out in his zone type.

I think Hannibal was excellent driving he can break lines with his carrying and can spot a forward pass and has drive to step up against the ball.

Sorry sausage finger typing on my phone!

What I was mentioning to say is when he played at 23 level yesterday was what we saw.

From deep had ability to go up against the ball quickly with ball winning quality , but in possession he can drive though lines carry and play though with quality.

He’s an integral player. Always showing for the ball, never stops running. It creates spaces for others and was a major reason why our first half performance in particular was so dynamic and fluid.
