Best unbeaten runs

Post by ClaretTony » Wed Mar 12, 2025 12:10 am

1920/21 - 30 games
2024/25 - 24 games
2015/16 - 23 games
2022/23 - 22 games
1981/82 - 20 games

When I saw the 23 nine years ago I never thought I'd see us get close to that again - then we got within one two seasons ago and now beaten it. All the five above are remarkable runs.

We might be disappointed tonight not to have won but we shouldn't be given the run we are on.

Wonder if we can challenge the famous 30 games.

I’d been going to start a thread asking folks favourite of the last 3.
This one isn’t close but tight between the other two. I’m just edging towards SDs because it was unfinished and the incredible euphoria after the late draws at BHA and home to Boro.

Plenty of people on here complaining, despite this run.

It's brilliant that we are unbeaten but when we need to change things it's like for like and no better , i for one said we needed a striker in January to get us over the line and if Foster is out for a week or two we have only Fleming and Barnes now.

I agree a striker would have been ideal, but who?

when i heard Adam Armstrong was available on loan i thought we would be all over it because of his record in the Championship and he has pace i was seen last night when he should have scored..

Brilliant run. More than half a season unbeaten now.

Doesn’t matter what level you’re at or how big your budget is, it’s still a very hard thing to do.

Its a great run and things are so tight, in the last 6 games we've only pulled one point back on both Leeds and Sheffield U.

Someone in the top 3 is going to to hit a bad run at a bad time.

Exactly my thoughts. I keep expecting Sheff U to lose, but they keep on grinding out results even when they're not playing well (which, when you listen to their fans, seems to be most weeks!). Bristol City had 60% possession and 23 shots last night, yet it took a last minute goal to earn them a point. If we can beat Swansea on Saturday it puts pressure on them to get a result in the Sheffield derby. Wednesday are no mugs, so it should be a humdinger!

Our 24 game run is a fantastic achievement. Hopefully we can push for the club record and break into the top two as a result.

I think it was Arsenal

DL were on to break it under Revie. They had to stay unbeaten against Stoke to tie it, and then avoid defeat against us to break it. Stoke beat them anyway, and the following week we stuffed them 4-1 at ER courtesy of Fletchers overhead kick.

Or at least that's how I remember it.

Don't know if it's still a record, but Leeds had a 34 game unbeaten run around the 1969-70 season,
that extended into the following season.

Might not be those dates, but it was around then, I'm sure.

Indeed it was. I remember Leeds having gone 29 in 1973/74 and 2-0 up at Stoke in the next game before losing 3-2. I think Liverpool also got within a game too.

Arsenal, of course, did 38 when they went through the season unbeaten.

Forest held the record for going unbeaten over two seasons but our record was in one season, more remarkable given we lost the first three games prior to that thirty.

Arsenals run of 49 must beat Forests run of 42 if spreading over multiple seasons.

A run is only as good as what you get out of it. You could go 46 games unbeaten and still get relegated after drawing the lot.

In 15/16 we got 55 points from 23 games and won the league
In 22/23 we got 55 points from 22 games and won the league
In 25/26 we've got 52 points from 24 games, and it's those extra dropped points which means we're in 3rd instead of top.

Fine margins, but settling for draws against teams far below us is costing us this season

I hold my hand up to moaning we have thrown away points to crap sides the latest being WBA
If half of draws were wins we'd be well clear of DL and the Blades. 9 games left 4 home wins and 3 aways should be enough for automatically getting promoted

No, they're not.
But the case could be made that QPR, Oxford, PNE, Derby and Stoke aren't exactly brilliant.

And we dropped two points against all of them in our
0-0 draws we had against them. Three of those games at home.
That's where we'll look back and regret our shortcomings
on the goalscoring front if we don't get automatic.
But hopefully it won't come to that.

If it ends up being a freak season where 92 points isn't enough I don't think you could say we have any short comings when we'd be a better side than any SD one if we get more points but not enough to automatically get promoted

I thought the last 6 matches had shown that we had learnt how to create goals and win games, last night showed we had learnt nothing. Back to playing slow, slow build up. Back to not putting the ball in early, fast and low. Back to not getting enough bodies in the box. Back to passing backwards when we could have attacked. It's the frustration of knowing we can do so much more than what we deliver that hurts.

Does that mean that all the Premier League teams in the last 10 years that got more than 54 pts despite finishing outside the top 7 and not qualifying for Europe are better sides than the Burnley team who finished 7th?

I agree. Just three of those 0-0s converted to wins would put us top right now by two points

I've got a funny feeling that both DL and Sheff U fans will point to points they have dropped to 'lower/poorer' teams as well.

There's something in that ... but like so many other posters you aren't taking the opposition into account. WBA not only pressed us very effectively and cut down our chances of making good passes out of defence but they also got back very quickly and competed well in midfield. I don't think we ever settle for a draw (as someone else said)...I think we always play roughly the same game which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
Are we really just not trying as hard as Sean's teams or does the football just look different? As things stand we look likely to get about the same points total, it might be our bad luck that two other teams exceed it, however still 9 games to go.

We SHOULD be 9 points clear
Tbf if 8 months ago I had been told we would be 2 points off top in 2nd place, 25 games undefeated and 27 clean sheets for the season with 8 games to go ... I would have snapped their effin hand off.

Yes we probably should have a few more points but ... hell man we are 2nd and a record breaking season in so many ways.

Embrace it and watch us march on :D

Just about every team drops points that disappoint the fans, it's competitive football.

We shouldn't, but there will no doubt be Leeds and Sheffield United fans saying the same thing.

So many football fans think that only their team are unlucky or have refs' decisions go against them.
