Styles
Very impressed with him last night and did a good job on Edwards and the tackle in the box in the second half to stop Edwards scoring was excellent, pity we let him go early in is career..

Re: Styles
Wasnt quite just Styles with Edwards though. Every time Edwards got the ball they doubled up on him. They'd decided that was the key to stop us and it was effective. Its also probably the reason Pires was able to have the shots he had I'm guessing.
On Styles he hasnt really been above the Championship (some of it in League One) and in the time since he left we've spent much of it in the Premier League. The result would still have been the same and he would have had to leave to get football. That's how it looks to me so I'm not too bitter on that one.

Re: Styles
I thought exactly the same last night. Styles marshalled Edwards very well indeed, but especially in the second half, with help from their LCB who was always very close backing him up. It meant Edwards was as ineffective as I’ve seen.
Good player.
Good player.

Re: Styles
I don't think Edwards made it hard enough for him tbh. He looked off the pace last night compared to some of his other games, seemed to lack that sharpness and speed of thought we've seen from him.

Re: Styles
Totally agree Vegas .Ash should have partnered Zian with Koleosho on the right wing and Edwards benched for last half an hour Swansea is a winnable game and we need Edwards fresh and at his best for it.

Re: Styles
However he played last night, most in the academy at the time believed it was a huge mistake to let him go rather than offer him a scholarship; Jason Blake thought otherwise. It probably cost us a transfer fee but for him at some point, it's worked for him though and at 24 he's now played almost 240 Football League games.

Re: Styles
He looked a LB. I don’t know much about him but thought he was a midfielder filling in for them at LB. A Hungarian international also.

Re: Styles
Styles and Holgate were both very good last night.
Re: Styles
If things had worked out differently we could have had a back line entirely sourced from the academy: Lukas Jensen, Jimmy Dunne, Bobby Thomas, Owen Dodgson and Callum Styles. I know Dodgson is only playing in League One but the rest are all regulars in the Championship.
Very impressed with Styles last night.

Re: Styles
He was definitely used as a mid-fielder at Burnley & the same at Barnsley......first i've seen of him since.
Good luck to him.
Good luck to him.
Re: Styles
I can recall people on this message board saying it was a huge mistske to release him.

Re: Styles
He left us at 16 as we won the Championship to enter a 6 year spell in the Premier League where under Dyche he wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the first team.
Who knows how his progression would have gone if we'd kept him and pushed him out on multiple loan spells. Maybe we would have go a few hundred grand for him or even a bit more but he's spoken about on here let we let a prize asset go. No doubt he's done really well to establish himself as a good Championship player but lets be honest, 9 years on from letting him go he would have made a handful of appearances for us at best
Had we been a struggling Championship side or dropped down to league 1 I could understand peoples frustration but when you play at the level Dyche took us to you've got to be something special to make it from the academy ranks into the first team and I'm not sure Styles had or has that quality

Re: Styles
Ever since I have been following football, players released by a club at an early age have gone on to become much better players. Names that come to mind are Martin Dobson (Bolton),Souness (Spurs), David Seaman (Leeds), Dwight McNeil (Man Utd), Lee Dixon (Burnley ). There are thousands of names we could all come up with
Re: Styles
There’s no one we’ve released that I think would’ve made a significant contribution to the club.

Re: Styles
We sold Brian Laws for a pittance & he didn't turn out so bad either.
Re: Styles
Shall we try and live post 2000 for a moment, old boys, the world of proper football only really started then.

Very impressed with Styles last night.
As decent as careers some of these have had Burnley have been either been in the EPL or in the top 2 of the championship whilst these lads have mostly been playing in teams that have been nowhere near this level.
Given the hundreds of millions we have had during the last few years I can imagine the reaction on this board if we would have been blooding some of these lads rather than signing the likes of Tarks, Keane, Esteve etc
And on the other subject of players we let go was Peter Beardsley not one of them ?

Re: Styles
Andy Payton should go on the list.
But what’s all this about Bryan Robson and Jimmy Case?

Re: Styles
Thanks Clive.
I looked up Robson on wikipedia and apparently he had a trial here (and several other clubs). It doesn't say if he was offered a place in our youth setup or not, only that he signed for Don Howe at WBA.

He's a good Championship player. He can both defend and attack with purpose.

Though he was simply too quick and physical for Edwards
