I've seen a few people complaining about Lucas Pires's throws last night, even marking him down for it.

Bearing in mind the law surrounding throw-ins below, what exactly do people think he was doing wrong?

It's perfectly fine to take a throw in like that, and that's why he didn't get pulled up on it

He’s not releasing the ball from behind / over his head. He’s releasing it a long way after that.

Given referees hardly ever pull players up for foul throws it doesn’t really matter, marking him down for it is beyond ridiculous. It’s like marking Trafford down for holding onto the ball for longer than six seconds.

Lots of foul throws going on last night, and not just Pires. One of their players constantly lifting his foot in the air

I see foul throws week in week out, goalkeepers release the ball about a yard outside of their area when they take a goalkick- there's loads of stuff that largely gets ignored these days.

Yes, particularly shirt pulling. It's getting ridiculous now, I'd love to see a ref have the guts to penalise someone for it,

The worst is yellow carding players for kicking the ball away but doing nothing against players standing in front of the dead ball at FKs. They are both designed to slow down the FK and should both be yellows.

I started a thread on this a few weeks ago.

People getting caught up in the release point of the ball.

Admittedly rule isn't overly specific about where it should be released and many are not aware of that. Just that it needs to come from behind the head and over the head. Not released at the "over the head" point and that is where the misconception lies.

It’s poorly worded but the word ‘throw’ implies release. If you haven’t released it you haven’t thrown it so ‘throw from behind the head’ implies release behind the head.

Actually the rule includes the words ‘over the head’ as well, so release over the head is also fine.

Can't help but think that video would have been better with multiple balls than him jogging across to collect the ball after each throw

The laws don't say anything about the release of the ball. Lots of assumptions being made, but if you think about the mechanics of throwing a ball, knowing exactly when it has been released with the naked eye is practically impossible. Even if you let go, given your hands and the ball are travelling at the same speed, then they will still be in contact for a period of time afterwards.

The only logical conclusion is that you must start with the ball behind your head, and it must come over your head, but the exact point of the release isn't important

People complaining about a throw in style that didn't get given as a foul throw once is a new low.

Seriously, go and get a new hobby. Football isn't for you.
