Results and attendances from 15th March 1992

Post by jdrobbo » Sat Mar 15, 2025 10:35 pm

A John Pender header in front of the Cricket Field End gave Burnley a 1-0 win but just look at that attendance….the highest highest in the division by several thousand.

And look at top-flight Chelsea…only managing to see a gate of only 50 or 60 more fans than at Turf Moor.

Carlisle’s win at Gillingham was elementary! 😉

Burnley’s attendance was virtually the same as the First Division game at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea played Coventry! How things change.

Remember the game well. It was the first fixture for us after the tragic death of Ben Lee.

Wayne Biggins & David Eyres on the scoresheet.

more importantly did they leave a zero off the Leeds attendance, self proclaimed biggest club in the world. Not even the biggest club in Yorkshire.

Another thing that strikes me is that 17 of those league teams are no longer in the top 4 tiers, and some are defunct.
(It's 18 if you include Wimbledon)

Attendance at Bramall Lane was the biggest in English football that weekend. Surely that’s a one and only time event. Also, incredibly low attendances for the likes of Everton given how good they were just a few years earlier. You can actually see why the premier league was developed when you see the attendance numbers.
