Myles Lewis-Skelly

Post by Tricky Trevor » Sun Mar 16, 2025 2:46 pm

I can’t believe this kid has got an England call up. He’s played 13 senior games been sent off twice and should have been sent off in last weeks European match, after an obvious second yellow wasn’t produced.
He may go on to have a tremendous career but he’s a long way from international level.
Or does it show how bare the England cupboard is at LB?

Manager probably wants to see him up close in training. Makes total sense.

England have always picked from media darling teams despite there being better players out there
James Tarkowski should have been a shoe in at cb yet he plays for an unfashionable club so he gets overlooked
Arsenal have had a string of players capped above other deserving cases over the years this kid being the latest

Think your last sentence sums it up, a paucity of options at left-back. Hopefully this lad turns out to be the real deal.

At the latest reckoning there are around 33 % of the players in the Premier League that are eligible to play for England ,so if you pick the best 15 players from each team as some aren’t available through injury or aren’t making the match day squad due to lack of form you’ve only 100 players to pick from and your picking an England squad with 4 keepers ,pickings become a bit thin .Man Utd today had only 18 yrs old Heaven starting today who was English ,Liverpool possibly had none.

Personally I find these nonsense breaks a distraction to our season and international fixtures need cutting back.Lets hope our players return uninjured and we can push on with the real goal of seeing Burnley FC promoted come May

Gives the manager a chance to see him close up
Probably won't play

We had a dearth of left sided players for a long time, but now we have quite a few and there's nothing wrong with blooding them

I agree when it just friendlies or euro league qualifiers

But these are world cup qualifiers, so it's not really a nonsense break

What is "nonsense" about the World Cup?

These are world cup qualifiers, so a meaningful break. However, I agree the point intended. FIFA and EUFA compete to get extra matches in the calendar and make themselves 'the most important thing in football'.

Football, footballers and local clubs are the most important thing in football.

This lad is a nobody. His call up is to assist big clubs, as it will add to his valuation. Nothing more.

He is the least qualified player to be called up and his disciplinary record is appalling. Something England used to be very particular about!

The World Cup has been developed by FIFA as an unwealdy monster with teams who wouldn't beat Stanley taking part.Too many international breaks imo but then I never watch England.

Maybe people In the industry know what a talent he is behind the scenes which has been fed back to Tuchel who wants to see him close up himself. Not everything is a conspiracy.

I see the usual lazy arguments about big club bias, picking mates, doing clubs / players a favour etc are out in abundance after the latest squad announcement. Lewis-Skelly is in the squad because he's had a big impact in a top team and shows the potential to be, at least, a squad player in 18 months in a position where England isn't particularly well stocked.

Tuchel has a short contract, where his sole objective is to win the world cup. He has a limited number of opportunities to look at players and build the team & squad that he thinks gives him the best opportunity to do that. Why would he waste his time or energy on any player that he doesn't genuinely believe can contribute to that? Do we really think he would ignore players at certain clubs who could help him achieve his goal? Or that he doesn't think to watch Everton / Ipswich / Forest ?

How much will Traffords call up increase his value? Obviously helping a big club though.

It’s just because we have no decent left backs and suddenly one comes along who at least has potential. Otherwise it’s back to Chilwell, Cresswell, a CB playing at LB or a RB switching.

I really can not stand full backs switching to the other side, eg Trippier, Roberts for us.

One of the most speacialised positions on the field and they're expected to perform equally well on the other side.

No doubt his disciplinary record has been poor but to say he’s a nobody is a bit daft.

Likely going to be arsenals left back for the next 10 years. He’s looked immense for them nearly every time I’ve seen them.

If Hall wasn’t injured I suspect he would have still made the squad. Hall and Lewis Skelly will likely be englands future left backs fighting for that position

First time I’ve seen him but Tino Livramento looked a cracking player against the Scousers yesterday.

Livramento is currently playing LB for Mags and he has no left foot. Not playing poorly but how much better would he be if he put the work in to upgrade it.
He also made the England squad so I'm expecting one of them to start.

Spain called up Yamal at 16. France called up Zaire-Emery at 17. No issues with Tuchel calling up a very talented young player in a position we are light and have been for years.

IanMcL,

You're a great poster. You come across as a genuine and nice guy.

But your posting here needs to be taken with as much salt as Hutchy posting on a non-Rovers thread.

Come on England!

No doubt he will be a somebody but not yet. Let him learn properly. When Southall called up all the U21s it went to their heads and lots disappeared.

Yeah having to play in a desert every 4 years puts a bit of a downer on it!

Bidding to hold the olympic games is a much more transparent process isn't it!

Where money is involved nothing is clear cut, particularly on a large scale in sport.

I thought we were talking about the previous poster who was intimating that the actual football part of the World Cup and its qualifying games were an irritation to him?

Infantino and his cronies and their UEFA counterparts are a different matter indeed!

Aye but 9 PL games is still not enough. I think he could make a good LMFer but not a LB on current viewing. Those reds and yellows he’s had tell the story.
BTW. Koleosho was mentioned on another thread as being called up, he wasn’t, to tie him to Italy. Is this a possibility with L-S? I don’t know his heritage.

Hate to put a damper on the guy scoring ,but yesterday I watched the Dimbleby lecture with Southgate ,and his opinions on the young players of today ,watching Lewis -Skelly’s reaction when he scored was of a kid whose still wet behind the ears but thinks he’s the dogs ******** after only a few appearances ,and Southgate’s take on this is how does he react when reality kicks in and he gets left out of the Arsenal team?
