Burnley Internationals Question
It's been common for a while that we have players away on international duty but we must have gone quite a period of time without an international player (from Hamilton and Cassidy at a guess right through the 4th Division years and beyond).
My question is, who was our next international after that? My guess would be Ian Cox - struggling to think of another through the 90's.

That's about the time you think Prince 1999 is years away of a different time to come if you like, now we are well beyond that time

Re: Burnley Internationals Question
In between that period we had Mark Caughey in Feb 1987 who was a current Northern Ireland international with 2 caps and was in their 1986 World Cup squad in Mexico but didn't play whilst at Burnley, in fact never played for them again.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 9:02 pmBilly Hamilton & Brian Flynn in 1984 with Phil Gray the next one in 2000.
I was really excited when we signed him as the solution to our problems up front and as far as I was concerned he was a current NI International just returning from the World Cup in Mexico and our next Billy Hamilton

His performances didn't match his supposed potential although it does prove how poor we were when he then signed for Hamilton in Scotland and scored 13 in 21.
So many false dawns in the 80's.
Didn't realise it was Billy Hamilton that recommended him to us.
An interesting piece on him, I didn't know his back story.

He’d not have counted had he played because he was on loan so is still registered with his parent club.billyhamilton82 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 10:30 pmIn between that period we had Mark Caughey in Feb 1987 who was a current Northern Ireland international with 2 caps and was in their 1986 World Cup squad in Mexico but didn't play whilst at Burnley, in fact never played for them again.

We did have internationals play for us between those years - such as Waddle, Woods, Cowans but none capped while at Burnley.

Re: Burnley Internationals Question
I was convinced Marco Gentile was going to be the next Frank Rijkaard or even Franco Baresi (didn't he have Italian lineage as well?)
This opinion was formed from nothing other than his exotic sounding name.
