Clean sheet record
I believe we are now only two away from equalling the all time record in English football.
Re: Clean sheet record
When was it and by whom? We have 28 at present?

Imagine if we finish the season on 102 points, win the league and break the all time records for most clean sheets and least goals conceded...

Re: Clean sheet record
Mentioned yesterday that Gillingham in 95/96 hold the current record with 29 clean sheets and 20 goals conceded overall.
It was Tony Pulis who was manager and the Gillingham team had the following reported in the media:
"an army of six-footers able to belt the ball into orbit and tackle themselves into a frenzy" and stated that their approach to the game was effective but unattractive to watch and had "no craft, no flair, no guile"

Google the table from that 53-54 season
Scunthorpe were called Scunthorpe and Lindsey United becoming Scunthorpe Utd in 1958
Also noticed Workington Town in Div 3 N and I remember them replacing New Brighton in 1951.
Eleven clubs from that season now non-league but only 3 from Division 3 South with none from the north in the Prem but 5 from that year in the Southern section, although of those 5 two wont be in it much longer (Southampton and Ipswich)

Just to correct a common error, Workington’s football team is called simply Workington.
Workington Town is the name of the Rugby League club.

It depends on what question it was asked and how it was phrased. The current season is not yet a matter of historic record and therefore marry not appear in some searches relating to the past tense questions.
AI is only as good as the data set it interrogates and the precision of the user. Is what my robot overlords told me to say....
Re: Clean sheet record
There's a small possibility that the top three teams all finish on 100 or above points.
Imagine setting the record for the most clean sheets and least goals conceded and 100 points but still be in the play offs

Not quite on the same level, but we did of course finish 12pts behind both Stockport and Plymouth in 1994.

But if we lose the play offs to a team miles behind us, that would be entirely different.

Re: Clean sheet record
I have said this a few times to people. At this stage, there's as much chance of us winning the league as there is of us being knocked out in the semi finals of the playoffs. Think Brighton in 2016 (there's probably been others but thats the one that springs to mind).
Re: Clean sheet record
Since it became the Championship (20 years ago!)
9 out of last 20 seasons 3rd place have gone up via the playoffs.
Only twice have 6th place gone up.

In 2009, we finished 5th and Sheff Utd 3rd.
Can anyone remember (without cheating) the two teams that went up automatically?

Re: Clean sheet record
Didn’t Birmingham pip Sheff Utd to 2nd? Probably either Wolves or WBA first? It was usually one of those two around that time.

Wow thats less than 50% so we'd have more chance of winning the play offs if we cam 4th, 5th or 6th than if we came 3rd. Lets hope we come in the top two then I guessChrisG wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 10:33 amSince it became the Championship (20 years ago!)

Re: Clean sheet record
Well, not exactly, but I see why you would say that.
However, you can’t finish 4th, 5th, and 6th in the same season.
So, based on your 20 year timeline, finishing 3rd results in promotion 45% of the time and is 9 times more likely to result in promotion than 6th. You have a 30% and 20% chance of promotion from 4th and 5th respectively.
Or to put it another way, yes, let’s win the league!

As is finishing 4th, 5th or 6th. If you only get to buy one ticket, you buy the ticket that gives you the best chance of winning.

Re: Clean sheet record
9 out of 20 is a minority of promotions but being 3rd is the best position for getting promotion via the play offs.
Re: Clean sheet record
Technically it’s a minority, but in voting terms you’d call it a pretty strong plurality. 9/20 is pretty short odds for a 4-horse race.
Anyway, your original post that I replied to said ‘the team finishing third rarely wins the play-offs, which is just wrong. 45% is not a “rare” outcome.
Re: Clean sheet record
What would be more interesting, but probably more difficult to find out, is how often the team finishing 3rd had gone up via the play-offs when they’d missed out on automatic promotion on the last day of the season.Greenmile wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 10:47 amTechnically it’s a minority, but in voting terms you’d call it a pretty strong plurality. 9/20 is pretty short odds for a 4-horse race.

Rare was probably the wrong word to use but the stats prove more play off winners come from 4-6th than 3rdGreenmile wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 10:47 amTechnically it’s a minority, but in voting terms you’d call it a pretty strong plurality. 9/20 is pretty short odds for a 4-horse race.

Re: Clean sheet record
Brilliant. All we need to do is make sure we finish 4th, 5th and 6th then, and we’ll have a 55% chance of going up through the playoffs.
I know DA is being deliberately thick in agreeing with you, but I’m a bit worried you’re actually being genuine.

Re: Clean sheet record
I’ve done a bit of digging and it seems the reason why the team finishing third has the highest chance of winning the play offs is because the team finishing third is the best team in the play offs. Interestingly, it appears that the team finishing fourth is the next best, followed by the team finishing fifth. Perhaps surprisingly the team finishing sixth is the least likely to win the play offs because they are the poorest team in the play offs.

Re: Clean sheet record
Ok then i'll go with that so
18 promotions from not finishing 6th
16 promotions from not finishing 5th
15 promotions from not finishing 4th
you cant finish in all 3 positions so more have come from 3rd. Now reel your fishing rod back in

I've never said anything about finishing in all three positions, I've said more play off winners have come from teams not finishing 3rd there is no fishing rod it's just a very simple straight forward statclarets1978 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 2:33 pmOk then i'll go with that so
