Permutations for Promotion
As we now know today's results for us and SU, we also know what is needed to secure promotion
(Assuming our GD remains better than theirs)
Win v SU
Promoted
Draw v SU
Need 1 pt from final 2 games
Lose v SU
Need 4 pts from final 2 games

As many have said, I am concerned SP will go for the draw on Monday.

I don’t care if he does. There’s absolutely no chance we do not get at least 1 point from the last 2 games.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 7:54 pmAs many have said, I am concerned SP will go for the draw on Monday.

I think DC's point is that we stand a bigger chance of losing if we go for a draw rather than a win

Re: Permutations for Promotion
If we were to lose on Monday we could need 4 points from the last 2 games, as SU could get to 95 points. It's far from over yet.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 8:06 pmI don’t care if he does. There’s absolutely no chance we do not get at least 1 point from the last 2 games.
Re: Permutations for Promotion
Agreed. It's about mentality. If we play our normal style and draw, no problem. If we try something abnormal, we won't be playing our best game. Seeing how 9-man Watford nearly pegged us back twice, I'll take my chances with the former.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 7:54 pmAs many have said, I am concerned SP will go for the draw on Monday.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
I'm sure we'll be more cautious than gung ho on Monday. It suits us to play that way. But with Foster unavailable we lack a threat in behind on the front 3. We do look a better team when we squeeze higher up the pitch.

I don't think anyone would've dared dream we'd be 5 points clear of 3rd not long ago. But I'm nowhere near comfortable, 2 losses in a row isn't likely but certainly possible. I would really love for us to out sheff united to the sword on Monday. We're more than capable.

No issues we will put Sheffield United to the sword on Monday

We must not have gone out for a draw many times in the last 30 games thenRoosterbooster wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 8:08 pmProvided we actually do draw

Re: Permutations for Promotion
It doesn’t suit us though. Look at today. Tried to see out a win v 9 men, and very nearly threw it away. We’re better at attacking and forcing them back, than arsing about / flailing around looking for fouls / looking for a draw for 90 mins.claretspice wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 8:15 pmI'm sure we'll be more cautious than gung ho on Monday. Re: Permutations for Promotion
Is it really a thing of playing for a draw, or just playing a stronger defensive team that will be less likely to concede? Sheffield United have to win, and this is an advantage for us. Leeds and Sunderland have been to the Turf without scoring, though I'm sure we still played to win those games, but perhaps with a line-up that nullified their threat.

Also need to remember in order for us to need 4 points if we lose … that’s on the understanding that Sheffield United win their 2 remaining games

Re: Permutations for Promotion
I'd take that drab draw at home against Leeds again, but Sheff Utd won't act like Leeds did.AndrewJB wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 9:22 pmIs it really a thing of playing for a draw, or just playing a stronger defensive team that will be less likely to concede? Still, I'm fine with a more defensive lineup, just not a defensive mindset, I suppose.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
It suited both Burnley and Leeds to play out a bore draw and it was pretty clear what was happening in that match from about 5 minutes in. Obviously that won't be the case on Monday. I'm sure we won't be taking any undue risks, but I'm equally sure that Parker is astute enough not to just sit back and hope Sheff Utd don't score
Re: Permutations for Promotion
Need to go out all guns blazing and get in front. They're likely to try and frustrate us, keep it tight for most of the game, and gradually try and nick one 2nd half and defend like mad. The longer it's 0-0 the more nervous we'll become and be happy with the point.
Re: Permutations for Promotion
Parker was involved in a very similar game to this at Bournemouth when they clinched promotion. If I remember right Forest could have gone level with them if they’d won, but Bournemouth won 1-0 to seal it. Funny enough it was Kieffar Moore who scored the goal, and he’ll be on the pitch for the opposition this time.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
if you look at the gaps Sheff Utd left today I'm confident we can get in behind them. Stop Hamer stop Sheff Utd
Re: Permutations for Promotion
The only permutation we need to worry about for Monday is which pubs we go to and in what order to Celebrate Promotion
Re: Permutations for Promotion
People still doubting parkers tactics is embarrassing. Bugger off and go and support someone else. We don't need you

My white electrical tape arrived today, I will have my 4 stripes on the sleeve for Monday out of respect for our great leader.
Re: Permutations for Promotion
That may be easier than we think - Hamer went off injured today. No idea whether it was just precautionary or whether it might keep him out.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 18, 2025 10:12 pmif you look at the gaps Sheff Utd left today I'm confident we can get in behind them. Stop Hamer stop Sheff Utd

Re: Permutations for Promotion
To be honest I’ll be surprised if it’s a draw on Monday. Sheffield United are going to have to come at us, it should make it an open game.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
Laurent will surely play on Monday as we will need his height on set pieces, that should see Brownhill in the 10 which IMHO is his best position. Looking at Sheff Utd today he will find space for sure.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
Agreed, a draw is no good for them, 5 behind with 6 to play for.
Win or bust for them so we should be in for a good game, and indeed a different kind of game too.
Re: Permutations for Promotion
The odds are very much in our favour, but if Sheff U beat us and Stoke on Friday night then we will go into the final two matches a point behind them but with a game in hand. That could make for a very nervy end to the season.

Basically, Monday is a must not lose.
Laurent back in for me and try to stay resolute defensively.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
We've no need to go gung ho, but we need to start faster than yesterday. Take any momentum away from them, then settle down.
A win is all that matters, another permutation just leads to more nail biting .

Re: Permutations for Promotion
I think privately Parker will be desperate to win the league, having gone up through the play offs and in second before. I think we'll go for it on Monday.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
We’ve played our best all season against teams that come out at us and give it a go. Sheffield United have no choice but to do that. They’re not good enough to beat us though so we’ll turn them over like every other team that’s has give it a go.
Our issue is we can’t break down teams that dig in.

Re: Permutations for Promotion
How far off that 'clean-sheets in a season' record are we now? I think Monday would be a very good day to add another one to our tally, irrespective of whether we score ourselves.

Odds of 1/20 to gain automatic promotion- same as Leeds. Sheffield United 11/2
