Nick Pope

Post by Penwortham_Claret » Mon Apr 21, 2025 7:51 pm

Just heard he is off to Leeds now their promotion is confirmed.

I wonder who Newcastle will replace him with?

I wouldn't be surprised if they go for Trafford

Trafford is reportedly already done but only last week they were linked with Ramsdale.
Trafford is still contracted so it’s up to us if he goes.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were other Premier League clubs also interested in James Trafford.

Unless Newcastle have already sewn up the signing

I've said since he signed the only place JT will end up is back at City

Why would we agree to sell Trafford to Newcastle before we know what League we are in next season. Surely they’ll be more than Newcastle after him now, if we do sell him

He’s only going to one club, that’s always been the plan. Newcastle might accelerate that plan.

Depends on how much we want for him, if we want £50m and Newcastle are prepared to pay it city will activate the buy back and sell him on for £50m

Isn't the buy back over £40m?

I find the Newcastle link weird.

Pope’s deficiency is distribution/kicking. That isn’t Trafford’s main strength either

Trafford is excellent with his feet.

Can't help feeling we've missed a trick with Pope, if Trafford leaving is true.

When Traff goes, I’d go for Ramsdale if we could get him. Very good keeper.

He’s excellent at slowing the game down and passing it to his CBs or Cullen when pressed. Definitely better than Pope. But his longer distribution still needs work. Today was a good game to compare his distribution (high, long, into space) vs say CJ (low, driven, to feet).

This doesn’t take anything away from him or the success he’s had this season and hopefully the season he’ll have with us next season. I just don’t think his short passing ability is worth £40m over Nick Pope

It's my guess that as a club we will be looking at players' sell-on potential, this discounts the likes of nick Pope

I think we’ll have Patterson in goal next season.

If Sheff Utd don't go up thru the play-off lottery, then their goalkeeper will be a great replacement for Trafford

His distribution is a lot better than Pope.
The difference in price tag is not about the difference in distribution - it’s the difference in age and the difference in contract terms etc.

Pope has been a brilliant keeper and Trafford looks like he will become a brilliant keeper. He’s been in and around the England set up for years now and looks like he is the natural successor to Pickford now.

We have been very fortunate with keepers in the last 10 years. Hope whoever we get next can keep this up. Cooper at Sheffield United looks very good but I’d take Pope back in a heartbeat as not only he is still a very good keeper but we are going to need experience in the PL as well as quality.

Just to bring a note of levity into proceedings, got a funny WhatsApp this morning.
Just heard the pope has died. Who’s going to play in goal for Newcastle now?
