Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
In total we've spent 294 mins behind in our 44 league games - remarkable in itself.
However, Josh Laurent has only spent 53 mins on the pitch whilst we've been behind:
Sunderland (a) - losing for 64 mins (didn't play)
Portmouth (h) - losing for 21 mins (subbed on after we equalised)
Hull (a) - losing for 32 mins (subbed on for 12 mins whilst losing till equaliser)
Millwall (a) - losing for 38 mins (played 11 mins after their goal before subbed off)
Boro (h) - losing for 24 mins (subbed on after we equalised)
Norwich (a) - losing for 66 mins (subbed on for 19 mins whilst losing till equaliser)
WBA (h) - losing for 3 mins (subbed on after we equalised)
Coventry (a) - losing for 11 mins (played all 11 mins whilst losing)
Watford (a) - losing for 35 mins (subbed on after we took the lead)

Thought he was excellent when he came on yesterday, always looking to drive us forward and get deep into their half.
Has been a fantastic signing.

Decent squad player st this level
Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
That moment when he and Sarmiento did the chest to chest was strong.
His biggest achievement as a player.
Top lad who's played a vital role.

There's a great image on social media where Laurent's reaction to promotion on his knees at the full time whistle is placed next to the iconic Orient game photo at the full time whistle

This stat isn't particularly meaningful. You could probably find a similar stat for a few players, someone like Sarmiento maybe or Edwards etc.Selby Claret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 10:58 amIn total we've spent 294 mins behind in our 44 league games - remarkable in itself.

On the other hand players like Esteve will have been behind for about the full 294 minutes because they played every game. Does this make them a worse player? I'm not sure there's much conclusion to be drawn either positive or negative.

Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
I wasn't suggesting that Laurent should play because we don't lose when he's picked and he's a better player than others - although I appreciate that's inferred.Goliath wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 11:47 pmThis stat isn't particularly meaningful. I just thought it interesting that a player could go an entire season (less 2 games) playing football for less than an hour on a losing side.
According to TransferMarkt he's been on the pitch for 2689 mins
Sarmiento for comparison 1112
Edwards 867
Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
What happens if you divide the total time a player was behind by the total number of their minutes on the pitch? Wouldn’t that be more helpful?

Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
I couldn't not do it.....!
Laurent - 2689 mins (53 losing) - 2% of the time
Sarmiento - 1112 (101 losing) - 9% of the time
Edwards - 867 (49 losing) - 5.6% of the time
I've not checked whether Esteve missed any mins - but assuming he's played the whole time he is:
3877 mins on the pitch (294 losing) - 7.5%
Laurent - 2689 mins (53 losing) - 2% of the time
Sarmiento - 1112 (101 losing) - 9% of the time
Edwards - 867 (49 losing) - 5.6% of the time

Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
Laurent is our go to change when we are winning and want to sure up the midfield also. Most of the time we wouldn't concede in those games anyway.
We also wouldn't usually bring him on as an attacking change when losing unlike someone like Hannibal who we'd often bring on to try and change a game.

Ok..and a lot of those 15 will be from winning positions. As I say it's a meaningless stat.Selby Claret wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 10:14 amLaurent has started 25 games and appeared from the bench 15 times

And just look at his CV… spent time at Hartlepool, Bury and Shrewsbury and Braintree. He’s seen that side of football, bet he’s pinching himself at what’s to come

I don't particularly rate him no but that's not the discussion is it. He's been a solid part of the squad.
Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
Showed on Monday exactly what he can do. Added some steel to the midfield, bought a lot of time with his powerful runs. Decent player for us this year

He's been class, and brought brilliant qualities that have allowed for a balanced team. Also looks to be a positive character around the place, and seems to be an integral part of that incredible togetherness, team spirit and work ethic that can't be attributed to individual inputs.

Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
It's become a bit of a cliche this season, that he's not one of our better footballers but we often look better when he's in the side. As we know, once you get to the Prem, someone like him is pretty much a starting point for size and physicality.

I'm struggling to think of another midfielder of his physicality that we've had in the PL. Bikey played much of the 09/10 season there, but I'm not counting him as he was a defender playing out of position.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 12:06 pmIt's become a bit of a cliche this season, that he's not one of our better footballers but we often look better when he's in the side. Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
Just one thing I'd like to see Laurent add to his game next season, and if we can do it he's a dark horse to be one of the break out stars in the Premier League.
Goals. Specifically, headed goals, and specifically goals from set pieces. He's a good, tall, powerful athlete and he wins plenty of second balls around the park. He should be a real threat at dead balls and he should be aiming for 4-5 goals a season scored that way plus a couple arriving late in the box.
At times this season he's looked a bit clumsy on the ball against a low block, but that won't be an issue next season and his ability to break up the play and win the physical battle could be a massive factor for us.

Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
Do you think he can handle the pressure he's going to receive from most teams when receiving the ball? I just don't think it's possible to be a central midfielder at that level with his lack of awareness and confidence when receiving the ball in tight areas.claretspice wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 7:44 pmJust one thing I'd like to see Laurent add to his game next season, and if we can do it he's a dark horse to be one of the break out stars in the Premier League.

Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
I don't think
We shall see. I think that's a valid concern but I don't think Laurent's problem has especially been his initial receipt of the ball, it's been when he's tried to do something more progressive with the ball that he's looked a little clumsy. I can think of quite a few players who have made it at Premier League level of who have been of a similar ilk to Laurent.Goliath wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 7:57 pmDo you think he can handle the pressure he's going to receive from most teams when receiving the ball? Re: Josh Laurent - 53 mins losing for Burnley
I think he's consistently tried to disguise his lack of confidence/ability in this situations by avoiding receiving the ball there. He's absolutely fine when he's set and moving forwards with the game ahead of him although as you say he can be a bit clumsy with the ball. It's just something I noticed in his first game against Blackburn in a reluctance to show for the ball and have struggled to not keep seeing it as times gone on.claretspice wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 8:20 pmI don't think

Regardless he does have some very useful attributes and is clearly a good asset in the dressing room.
It only takes one midfield signing to relegate him to basically 5th choice central midfielder next season though so I don't think we will be seeing that much of him.

Thanks Tony - foiled again by the internet - the stat for Laurent included his 3 starts for Stoke before we signed him (270 mins) - make it 2.1% losing as a claretClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Apr 24, 2025 7:56 pmThat Laurent figure is not correct but those for Sarmiento and Edwards are.

How much did he cost us again? £500K? Absolutely obscene. He's got to be worth ten times that now.
