FIFA fines home nations over poppies

It's been 10 mins or so and no one has made a thread.

I can't even bring myself to type anything out on this one...

"Fifa disciplinary committee chairman Claudio Sulser said he "fully respected" the commemorations but stressed the rules "need to be applied to all member associations".

"The display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited," he added.

"In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else."

So when they sing "God Save the Queen" they've broken both those rules in the space of four words!

Are they going to take action about all those St George's Crosses on display?

National anthems are allowed I suppose.

I respect that they have to adhere the rules without favouritism for any member FA though.

It would be nice if FIFA donated the money earnt from these fines to the poppy appeal. Can't see that happening though.

And so they should Sidney.

My peaceful protest will be sending my two poppies to Fifa headquarters without paying for the stamp which they will get charged for.
If enough do this it might cost them more than the 30k they have took off us.

The 'blame' if that is the right word rests with IFAB anyway surely, not FIFA.

I saw this going round social media at the time. Won't work as they'd have to agree to meet the cost of the stamp.

I think the RoI commemoration of the Easter Uprising is indeed a political reference as it was singular to them, whereas wearing the poppy is common to several nations and commemorates multi-national participation in two world wars, so hardly acts of individualism

I would hope the FA response is to state they'd do the same again, and take whatever FIFA throws at it. I would also suggest there are grounds for legal challenge on the basis of the 2011 instance

I swear some people won't be happy until we've withdrawn from the earth.

The football associations knew the rules, they knew what the consequences would be and the punishment has now been handed out. There can't be any complaints.

But Fifa are perfectly happy for Qatar to build their world cup stadiums using migrant workers as pretty much slave labour.

FIFA...
The finest example of modern day corruption you'll see.
It's got so much **** stored in its memory vaults, from so many countries, in so many ways.
Septic inherited it, was allowed to do what he wanted to do because of it.
The only sanction it'll get as an organisation now, is to "not be so blatant in future'.
I've no proof, other than it still has power.

The Poppy is a symbol of charity, nothing political or religious about it, to the morons who not know that, many religions and many different political supporters fought and died, or were wounded and are now supported with the help of the Poppy symbol (if it was political or religious I wouldn't buy one). Don't appeal, just don't dignify this ******** with any response.

Simply refuse to pay it and see what they do. Probably another fine which we still refuse to pay.

Fair enough.

Though you'd think if it was simply about wearing the poppy then the players could have just worn it secretly. But it wasn't about wearing it, it was about the FAs saying "look how patriotic we are".

Well it took about 20 mins before the meltdown kicked in on FB.

I've had to unfollow various football pages today because they were clogging my news feed quicker then people on here feel the need to create a new thread to make the same point as the last person when we lose.

For years, Celtic only wore numbers on their shorts and not their shirts...they used to ring the SFA at the start of each season to ask what the fine would be, and write them a cheque accordingly ..

Advice from a friend but I'd put a stamp on it because I don't think Royal Mail will deliver an item outside the UK without.

I think the rule is "any political, religious or commercial symbol, is strictly prohibited"

So Vauxhall is OK but there's no profit in Poppies.

I think the English FA should pay the fine proudly and also offer to pay for the Northern Ireland FA. Sky should offer to pay the fines for the Wales and Scotland FA's.

No need whatsoever for footballers to be compelled to wear poppies while playing. It's really not difficult to understand why FIFA bans such symbolism in international competitions if you're prepared to look at things objectively.

I'm sure the players could have refused if they wanted to. They'd be under public pressure not to, but they could have made a stand if they had disapproved on principle.

The Welsh and Northern Irish didn't have poppies on the shirts, anyway. They were charged because they had a poppy ceremony and minute's silence, and because some of the supporters were wearing poppies.

One thing they could do next time - they could inform FIFA that all the FA staff insisted on wearing poppies and so would only agree to attend the match in their private capacity, not their FA capacity. This means (unfortunately!) that there is no one available to offer hospitality to the FIFA freeloaders or the visiting teams' officials.

All 4 countries should pay the fine amount to the Poppy appeal and write to FIFA and tell them they have no intention of paying it to FIFA.

We should then appeal to every body we have to, to win this principle.

If they ban us from the WC so what - it stinks anyway.

Our players wives would be over the moon, allegedly, if their men did not have to play in June.

Yep, and look at the grief James McClean gets every year. It's wholly unnecessary for players to be put in that position.

The bigger point is that allowing any kind of references to wars in an international sporting competition is asking for trouble, regardless of the intention. Easier to adopt a blanket ban than to get caught up in picking which individual symbols are / aren't acceptable. It's pretty straightforward, really.

FIFA the corrupt organisation that makes teams wear Respect on their shirts have got this one badly wrong.
Perhaps its been lost in translation and what they really want from us is a Bung not a fine!

The Poppy is not political it is a sign of Respect , common Decency and Peace.

lets wear it again and start a crowd funding exercise to pay "the bung"

It is interesting to see the scale FIFA work to, a fine for a poppy comes in at a higher price than a fine for homophobic offences but below advertising a bookmakers name on your boxer shorts.

The fine for advertising might seem out of scale but if someone stands to make £100k for illicit advertising you can't stop them from doing that with a fine of £10k or they'll still make a £90k profit. The fine has to be greater than the potential benefit.

That said, most of the fines dished out are borderline pointless given the amount of money washing around the game.

Some of you are proper weirdos. In 2 minutes I've read suggestions that we should;

-refuse to pay the fine and be kicked out of the world cup
-go to the effort of finding disused paper poppies lying around the house and post them to FIFA's offices in Switzerland and hope they're forced to pay for receiving the package
-go to the effort of finding disused paper poppies lying around the house and post them to FIFA's offices in Switzerland even though they won't have to pay to receive the package in the order of achieving what I can only imagine to be a mildly annoying administrative situation
-wear the poppies again and when we inevitably get fined again ask the public to all chip in to pay it off

I'm seriously wondering what must be going on in some of your heads.
