Re: On this day in 2009
Great night, and playing in Claret Shirts to be topical!!
Re: On this day in 2009
One of my top 5 away games , went there in trepidation after the 1-0 lead from the 1st leg as Reading were a good side but as stated , two excellent goals sent us home in delirium.
Your just a s**t Neil Warnock

Easy to say it I know but after that match I thought our name was on the trophy.

The only game when I was stood next to the legendary Claret Till I Die, fair to say we both enjoyed the evening !

Re: On this day in 2009
That's the most ecstatic and delirious away end i've ever known.
TBH Reading were a much better squad than us. I never expected to win this game. It was backs to the wall stuff for 55 minutes.
Me and about a thousand others were all shouting, "Don't shoot!" and, "Pass it Blake!" as Paterson swung his standing leg.
What a night. Proud to be a Claret.

The whole tie swung on a mad moment from Reading centre half, Andre Bikey. Now where did he end up…

"They've done it again!"
Except not on this clip. Not quite the same without the Sky commentary but still two stunning and lifetime memorable goals as I danced round the living room.

Re: On this day in 2009
One of my favourite away games, maybe Plymouth in ‘94 beats it. The hostility of the “Blackwell, you are next” in the away end up to the commentary box at full time was intense. I watched the game back a few days later and there were no SKY filters then, and you could see him shrinking in his seat. He really was “just a s*** Neil Warnock”.

Watched it in the old White Hart pub in Burnley (now Shimla Spice) and there were some beers flying around when those goals went in.
Not even sure why I watched it in there, I think that's the only time I ever went in when it was still a pub.

Re: On this day in 2009
I was lucky enough to get a ticket from my.mate who had already booked hospitality to ensure he got on the ground. As a Foundation Member he received 2 tickets for the away end shortly afterwards and preferred to go in the away end.
I got the spare ticket as well as a lift down to Reading for lunchtime, hotel room and about 7 hours on the beers.
Things were messy when Pato hit the screamer from 30 yards with his wrong foot and then shortly afterwards Thompson rolled one down his shin to arc one over their massive goalkeeper.
We were 3-0 up and on our way to Wembley.
Got a free bus back to the train station afterwards with the home fans. Spent a while trying to find out what hotel we had for the night.
Cheers Jonathan, apart from that our trip back started before dawn.

Re: On this day in 2009
I had the offer of a free ticket for this game via another Hertfordshire based Claret who worked for John Lewis at the time. The drawback was the ticket was in the Reading end and I would have to go incognito as there would be implications for him at work if there were any issues. As a foundation member I managed to get a ticket in the away end so I drove to Reading after work and met Graham at the ground before going our separate ways. I did arrange to meet him after the game to give him a lift home as he had travelled to Reading by train. I was so thankful of not being in the Reading end when Paterson scored his screamer as there was no way on earth could I have kept quiet. I had bruising on my shins from the seats in front from the celebrations =, a small price to pay for one of the best away games ever.
Re: On this day in 2009
I wasn’t that lucky and had to join the massive queue on the May Day bank holiday to get my ticket. It took hours (5 or 6 I think) and I it was a warm day. I remember Mrs Kilby coming out with drinks and bags of crisps to keep everyone going. But never has a wait been more worth it. Still my favourite away game I think.Dressinggown wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 1:01 amI was lucky enough to get a ticket from my.mate who had already booked hospitality to ensure he got on the ground. Amazing night, got me thinking.. do we have an unusually small number of play-off games since their introduction? I know we have had a bit of time away from the football league in recent years, but we've only been in 3 times, once in each division.
The last goal we conceded in play off football was Stockport's opener after about 1 minute at Wembley in 1994. The only game we've ever lost was the first one down in Torquay.

Good as Paterson’s strike was, Thompson’s is one of the most aesthetically pleasing goals of all time.

Two wonder goals indeed then another great goal in the final from EW. Three brilliant (and very significant) goals all in a row, miracle-like.ecc wrote: ↑Mon May 12, 2025 7:21 pmReading 0 Burnley 2.

Re: On this day in 2009
What a day that was, up there with the best away days of the century in my opinion, we was truly spoilt for cracking days that season.
Even managed to get my RE GCSE moved a few hours earlier so I could make the coach to attend the game
big up Hazzy High for that

Re: On this day in 2009
12 teams out of 72 get there each year, so all else being equal it's an average of once every 6 years. We've been outside the PL for (I think) 31 of the 39 years that there have been playoffs so we should have been in them about 5 times. We've had (I think) 6 automatic promotions in that time.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 9:26 amAmazing night, got me thinking.. do we have an unusually small number of play-off games since their introduction? ...."the last goal we conceded in play off football"....
Was what you said, no mention of the actual final?
Just take another look at your post.
Re: On this day in 2009
For the avoidance of doubt, Plymouth scored their goal on 18th May 1994, Stockport scored theirs on 29th May 1994. Stockport's was the last goal we conceded in playoff football.

Watched it with a fair number of other Manchester area based clarets in a pub in the Red Lion in Didsbury. the locals weren't quite sure what to make of us
