I think to the extent that we had medium to long term plans for any of the signings that Summer they would have been blown apart by getting promoted a year earlier than was probably the real aim. Few of the permanent signings that Summer would have been signed with the Premier League in mind, more a season of consolidation & development, and so it's no surprise that many of them ended up back out on loan after promotion.

At what point prior to this season would it have been reasonable to give Egan-Riley a proper chance in the team?

CJ excelled in ST's defensive system where he had more time than he will get elsewhere. We will probably never know if he would have improved to EPL defence standards at both ends from defending set pieces and scoring at the other end. Genuinely prefer Michael Keane.

All true about fans loyalty, but what about his loyalty to Parker, who did so much for him.Doesn’t that mean something or has Parker said to him he is not guaranteed that position next season ?

If that's correct then for the individual you could fully understand why he'd feel like he wasn't properly looked after in that scenario.

Yes, but what the club and the fans did for him this season surely outweighs that?

Gut instinct - strikes me as a big time Charlie who thinks he is better than what he is, which is a young developing lower PL / upper Championship centre back. A shame, because I liked the cut of his jib in his various interviews. There is no hunger in paradise and many of these elite academy kids proceed to make poor judgements thereafter, we have seen it several times (as opposed to someone like Esteve, I write while touching wood).

I’d have been loyal to CJ and given him a start until Christmas after a record defensive season, but my gut feel is I am nonplussed, if that is his choice I’m fine with it, other than using up cash we could have strengthened elsewhere with.

He had a tough first couple of years with us and was already planning on moving on before he came In this season and played out of his skin probably to surprise of everyone including himself. I think Esteve made him a better player. A little like Ben mee did with everyone else he played alongside.

It seems all is not sweetness and light at Strasbourg FC as their fans are not happy with being a Chelsea feeder club.
Although, thanks largely to the emergence of the Pensioners loanee Brazilian Santos, their club have progressed this season.

Agree. There was nothing in his first 2 years that would suggest he was worth a long contract with a club aspiring to play in the Prem. You can look on it as unfortunate that he's played so well but is now out of contract but the flip side is that his performances this year were a huge and unexpected bonus that have helped win promotion. I'd prefer him to stay but he has an opportunity to cash in on one year of great form.

- 99% fans would have lost no sleep had he left last Summer
- his consistent high level defensive performances were key to us keeping 31 league clean sheets and us achieving promotion
-he has served his contract, and been easy to manage
-he has decided to leave

He goes with my best wishes, and the beauty is we have the best part of 3 months to find a replacement. Signing Joe Worrall was absolutely the right thing to do at the start of the season. None of us could have predicted CJ's form, and none of us could have predicted him and Esteve could create a phenomenal partnership would both play nearly every minute of the league programme-this at the time Ekdal, Lecorix and Beyer were all on the treatment table

Seems a strange move on the surface, but he will get paid loads and it is looking likely they will get European football next season. He will also shift sideways to Chelsea for next to no money if he's good enough for the PL as one of their dodgy as hell deals.

Re. wages.

This is where it gets complicated. Wages in France with the exception of PSG are low. Reliable sources quote Strasbourg's highest earnest this season as earning €2m. Which is actually more than I expected. French football is in financial meltdown due to no major broadcaster wanting to pay a lot for the rights (Chester has been tracking this on the financial thread).

Now, were CJER to sign for Chelsea then, yes, he'd earn a lot more than we could offer. However, Chelsea would have to pay us "reasonable" compensation. However, if this story is true it would be Strasbourg signing him.

Now, I obviously cannot imagine Chelsea would ever do anything in any way underboard, but the cynics might suggest they pay their players at Strasbourg additional amounts. As I say, a club with Chelsea's impeccable record of compliance with financial rules would never do that.

So, unless Strasbourg suddenly go crazy and offer a CB by far the highest wages at the club CJER wouldn't earn as much as if he signed for us (IMHO) or a massive club such as West Ham.

Well this isn't certain.

There was a spell last summer where some people were convinced that every rumour on twitter was true and then the window ended and lo and behold a large number of those players that people had insisted were going were still playing for Burnley.

I was one, there was about 3 mistakes in that appearance. It's one of the few times I've seen a player look like an absolute fish out of water in a Burnley shirt. It was up there with the Dane Richards, Frédéric Nimani cameos for incompetence.

That he recovered so well from that and Parker still put faith in him (partly out of necessity) was a testament to both of them

His contract situation was always going to be a problem. He's been shipped out on loans in the previous two years, and seen the upheaval promotion brings. Kompany threw the team in the bin two years ago. It's not a huge jump for a player to think history could repeat itself.

Ultimately, nobody expected anything from him this season. Had all our defenders been fit at the start of the season he wouldn't have got anywhere near the first team. Esteve, O'Shea / Worrall, Beyer, Ekdal, and even Delcroix would likely have been in before him. Circumstances went in his favour and suddenly he's part of a record breaking defence. Not even Mystic Meg would have seen that happening!!

Good luck to the lad. I'm not convinced it's the right call if he goes to Strasbourg though. He's going to need to perform incredibly well to get a move to Chelsea, if that's the long term thinking. I suspect he would have been better served signing another 3 years with us, with a relegation clause for him, and the option of an extra year for us if we were to stay up. The experience of a PL season would have been better for his development than a season in Ligue 1.

I have no issue with CJ leaving if he doesn’t want to stay, very disappointed yes and not happy with the money which will now have to be used to replace him.

Haven’t read the whole of the thread, but I’ll just throw this out for discussion.

From his point of view does he really want and see himself as a midfielder. He might have a better opportunity at Strasbourg to fulfill that wish if he does. I understand the argument about outstanding centre backs not necessarily having to be over 6ft, Baresi, Mascherano and of course Bobby Moore. But the EPL is a very unforgiving league for a young centre back (Michael Keene?) and a possible season shipping goals, may reduce his stock considerably.

Going to Strasbourg may allow him the time and opportunity to morph into the position he really wants to play, and then there is the Chelsea connection which he may see as a chance to then get back into the EPL with a big club more long term.

Just a thought, so don’t be too harsh.

I was one of the doubters too after that Blackburn Game. He come on for maybe 20 mins and nearly give me I heart attack several times, considering the opposition also! I said as many others did this guy can’t be in our xi,but he got his chance and he was bloody awesome after that. We are ultra critical at tmes I doubt Parker would have played him apart from injuries also.

Just to be clear the people writing him off after the Rovers game were doing so on the basis of 7 minutes of football played one week after he played well for 90 minutes in the difficult circumstances at Sunderland and it was never a sensible position.
