The 'value' to the winner of the Play Off Final is based on projected Premier League payments and TV revenues.

It’s the exact same, but that number entails PL revenue yr 1 (inc tv money, merit payment and extra revenue from sponsors, gate receipts etc) and parachute payments yr 1 and 2 should relegation occur.

I dont buy this argument. In fact, I'd go as far as saying its just plain dumb

Promotion bonuses will be paid by both Burnley and Leeds
Neither will get as much money as Sunderland for the playoff games

But the revenue gained from being in a higher league will more than cover it

But this is about the play off revenue. We weren't in the play offs.

I'm aware of that

The point is that you get more money the following year to more than cover the bonuses

If you go up via the playoffs, then you get extra income from merchandise and ticket revenue

So you don't lose money if you win the playoffs

Not sure it was a charitable act, more likely two chairman got together before the game and hedged their bets.

So far as I know the two chairmen usually mutually agree that the loser can have both lots of gate money, in the Champ/PL playoff at least. There is no reason why a chairman can't say no, not this year, but they always take the rational view that if they go up the gate money is a tiny drop of their income next year, if they stay down it's a big chunk, so they get greater utility (economics term, I think!) by agreeing the deal.
