^^^ Meant to read, "I'd still be looking at a player like VJ as 2nd choice even if Traff is to stay".

Hladky is not good enough to be a backup keeper in the PL.

Not good with his feet and that's a big problem in the Premier.
That's a bit of a myth since Pope has been Newcastle's keeper this season.

Personally I'd prefer Travers at Middlesbrough if or when Trafford goes. I don't see the love in for Campbell either or Hamer I think there are better options out there.

We are going to have to adapt as we saw it fail miserably under VK. Likewise for Southampton.

I don’t believe it is. Trafford often plays it short to a centre half and there’s not many goalkeepers who can’t do that. Far less expansive with his passing than him or Muric were under VK.

Trafford’s use of his feet is pretty integral to how we play. I’m surprised anyone has watched us this season and can’t see that. There’s not many, if any, keepers at Championship level who are as comfortable as Trafford with the ball at his feet.

Could not agree more, both have had great seasons to the previous seasons & I don’t think they could be any better & lightweight compared to most midfield/attacking options in the prem.

Spot on re Hamer and Campbell both too injury prone.I can see Harrison Reed arriving if JB doesn't sign.

Wow. He didn’t look like a £15m player with us. Mind you, nobody did last year!

Didn’t we have an £8m option if we stayed up? Must have had some season to almost double in price.

Yes, always makes me laugh. £12.5m for Assignon is a good deal, I think. I doubt we’d find anyone as experienced, fast and as good going forward for £12.5m to be honest. Does make the £8m we agreed if we went up look very good though.

Yeah I think £12.5m is a fair deal. I thought he was a net positive on our performances & added physicality / pace, like you say.

As much as he brought a little enthusiasm, his play acting and strops were enough to make my mind up, very frustrating when we are getting countered and he’s led on the ground in the oppositions box

Could the same be said of Hannibal? Certainly not intended as a dig, but Hannibal puts so much into the game that's he's goosed by 60-70 minutes.

Doesn't mean he has been injury prone, which is what I was responding to.

By the way, in the Championship last season, I think he played 32 games for over 70 mins, including over 20 games where he played 90+ mins.

I'm not sure where the view comes from that he doesn't often play 90 mins. Only three Sheff Utd players had more minutes on the pitch and, as is often the case, they were the keeper and two defenders.

It comes from the Sheff Utd fans, I've read it loads of times and heard it on some of their podcasts. I watched one today and they were critical of him for not being fit enough to do 90 minutes for far too many games (there was another player they were saying the same about too but I can't remember which one). I've only watched them 5 times this season, the games against us and the 3 play-off games.

The ones today were saying they could keep hold of him this summer because of his fitness. They watch him every week.

They will know that Hamer got in the Championship team of the season, won player of the season and is being linked to Leeds and Everton

He’s a good player, Hamer. I think some of the criticism about his fitness is less about how many minutes he plays and how many minutes he plays well for.

100% not what we need though in my view. I think we need some big, athletic players that are strong in the tackle. More of Hannibal and Laurent’s profile than Hamer’s.

Yep, he shouldn't have won the player of the season imho but I'll be surprised if he's playing for them next season. There must be a reason no PL teams went for him when he was on a free though

No, he wasn't on a free - he signed for a PL club in 2023 for circa £15m. There is a good chance he will sign for a PL club this summer.

Fair enough if you don't think he deserved to win player of the season. I agree, although he was clearly one of the best players.

Anyhow, none of this is relevant to my original post you quoted - he's not injury prone - and it's wrong to say he doesn't often play for 90 mins.

He's a good player is Hamer but probably just another example of a top end champ player that isn't quite at PL level that SU are going to want an arm and a leg for.

We're at another tricky crossroads and it is clearly very hard to strike a balance that leaves us with needing to buy some players that are cheaper, and may have potential to bridge the gap successfully like Odobert and Trafford, and not leaving us too exposed if they can't quite like Amdouni and O'Shea, but also buying ready made players that don't blow the budget and represent a significant improvement on what we've already got.

Cullen as the sitter, Brownhill as the box to box, Hamer in behind the striker seems to me like it would work perfectly, but does he provide that much of a improvement at the 15-20m they'd want to warrant hindering others development, such as Hannibal, Ramsey or Anthony. Dunno.

Hannibal has improved game on game.He will be a star in the Premier league and if we can get more goals out of him a very valuable asset.Joe Bauress can step up as an off the bench player. But we need a box finisher and perhaps a partnership of Flemming and Amdouni maybe worth a punt.

That sending off was scandalous to be fair. His theatrics against Spurs were an utter embarrassment and put a huge question mark over his mentality but let's not pretend he wasn't a big upgrade on Roberts in terms of physicality and attacking output.

We need to be targeting the below positions/players to upgrade on. They are all players in or around the first team. If we could make 5 first team additions in these areas it will keep together the main nucleus of the team but also see us push on. Will also say I'm not advocating selling these players I'm happy to retain them with more of the fringe squad leaving.

ST (Foster)
CDM/CM (Laurent)
CM/CAM (Brownhill)
RB (Roberts)
LB (Pires)

In terms of a squad next season I'd like to see us look similar to this.

Gk-
Traff
Hladacky/New
Green/new

RB-
New
Roberts
Sonne

LB-
New
Pires
Humphreys (also CB cover)

CB-
CJ
Esteve
Humphreys (also cover LB)
New
One of Worral, Ekdal, Beyer/New

CM-
New
New
Cullen
Hannibal
Laurent

RM-
Edwards
New
Benson

LM-
Anthony
Koleosho
New

Striker-
New
Flemming
Foster
Barnes/Banel

Gives you 28 players. Couple of under 21's in that for example a third choice keeper, fourth choice centre half and Banel as your fourth striker and that's the sort of 25 man squad we should be going for. Albeit I haven't included Brownhill.

Changed my mind about Ings. Still worried about his injury record, but I think he is what we need next year. Proven goalscorer PL experience and on a free.

Think Conroy's list / wish list is about right.

I do hope Worrall and Beyer can cover SH though. And hoping CJ stays.

And try and get an emerging striker from the continent / maybe the fella from Millwall if he is up to it.

Last 3 seasons 52 apps 4 goals.

If Ings hadn't previously played for Burnley would you be interested in signing him?

Sounds like Sheff Utd have offered a deal to Jimmy Dunne who is on a free
