Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Very little value for money there.
Trafford we’ll make a profit on. Wood and Cornet we made small profits on.
The rest of the list though …… crumbs. Some wasted money there, particularly for a club our size.
Some bad luck with injuries too.

Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Amdouni we will break even on at least. Although I hope we keep him.
Weghorst could see the logic in. Just never worked out.
Gibson similar to Weghorst.
Ramsey is a surprising one. Didn’t realise he was that much. We need to see a return from him now he is fit. But a terrible injury (same for Beyer).
Wood was excellent for us. Brady decent until his injury. Cornet until his.
But shows how spending big (or in our case relatively) doesn’t equate success.
Our best signings are often free or cheap.
If you could build our best side of the last 30-40 years I suspect many of these on their own cost more than 50% plus of said 11.

Heaton
Keane Tarkowski Mee
Trippier Arfield Defour Barton Boyd
Wood Ings
Off top of my head would be my best 11. Taking into considering all of talent, impact, consistency.
(You could argue for plenty of other players Gray, Vokes, Pope, Berge, Brownhill).
Point being. Bulk of that 11 cost bugger all.

We will have made a bit on Weghorst with his loans. How much did we sell him for?

Did we really pay €15m for Beyer? I thought it was reported as being about €8m.

The Beyer one looks a bit high ?
Ramsey may well turn out to be a good signing yet.

Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Wood probably the only out and out success from that.
As unlikely as it seems, at least half the list are still with us and could turn around their fortunes (Trafford already has).
Some bloody poor luck with injuries tho. Three of them suffered horrendous knee injuries that kept them out for over a year.

In Premier League terms, those transfer fees are peanuts, and you know what they say you get when you pay peanuts...

Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Makes you wonder what the exchange rate they are using to come up with those figures. Must have been 2 Euro's to the pound for some of them. Could have saved a few quid by paying in Sterling too for half of them.
There is a growing trend though, to take a transfer fee, add a few million to it and when it still looks too low change it euros so the figure rises again.

Chris Wood by far the best value on that list (up to now) Still think there's a lot more value to be found in Beyer, but not certain after such a bad injury lay off. Some of the others are jaw droppingly expensive v value for money.

Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Only with the benefit of hindsight…
Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
The only flops there really are Weghorst, Tresor and Gibson.
Beyer and Ramsey have been unlucky with injuries. As was Brady, he was a real player beforehand.
Did we not break even at least on Cornet? Hopefully we will do the same with Amdouni.
Trafford will go for huge profit and we all know the contribution Wood made.
Now compare us to the rest of the Top 20/30 clubs. All in all, I dont think we’ve done too bad.

Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
I know transfer fees are easier and more fun to look at, but can't forget wages. The average Prem salary now is £70k a week. A four year deal on that will match most of our biggest transfer fees.
The top earners in the Prem now will earn more in a year than we've paid for our biggest signing. It's all relative, I'm sure for a club that's spent the large majority of the last decade in the Prem, we're nowhere near big spenders. Not that the figures aren't all mental but that's another debate.

If we sold every ticket at Turf Moor, in every stand, including the away section, for £55 - regardless of where the seat is and the age of the person sitting in it - for every single home Premier League game this forthcoming season, it would be less than Erling Haalands yearly salary.
Re: Our top ten most expensive signings ever
Looking at those prices, we're going to have to break the £20 million barrier to replace any of the current squad that leaves to stand any chance of 17th place.
