Jagged Little Pill - 30 Years

Post by Rowls » Sat Jun 14, 2025 12:38 pm

30 Years to the day since Alanis Morissette's angsty 90s album was released.

There's some stonking good tunes on there.

My favourite? One Hand in my Pocket

Classic.

One hand in my pocket is one of those songs that’s been taken over for me, by Julia Davis and Rob Brydon in their excellent series “human remains”.

If you ain’t watched these, you are missing something very special. Absolute genius writing.

Great album. You oughta know my fave.
We were on a Rideau canal trip in Ottawa in ‘99. Student up front pointing out the spots and he says Alannis Morissette used to live there. Assembled tourists looked lost. He says “That’s ironic”. I loved him.

None of the things mentioned in the song were actually ironic.

Maybe that was on purpose?

‘Ironic’ reminds me of sticking Atlantic 252 on the radio and it always seeming to be on. That and ‘74/75’ by The Connells.

'You Oughta Know' comes around once in a while on my 'Long Journey' Spotify playlist and no matter how many times I've heard that song since I received the CD for Xmas '95 from a work colleague it's always a treat and a song I never tire of.
As for bobinho's reference further up about Human Remains, 'genius writing' is no exaggeration, all 6 episodes are masterpieces.

Alanis, have you no idea what "irony" is?

Yes, it's like "goldy" and "bronzy" only it's made out of iron.

Here's a young Ed Byrne pulling the song to bits much better than I can!

Genuinely have no clue what happened to that one unfortunately. Playlists messed up after one of the updates so must have got lost in the ether.

Is that the Peter Frampton song, 'Baby, I love your way'? If so, it's a cover I've not heard.

I hope you did your playlist with the same crappy sound quality as 252 btw.
