Music Videos

There has been some cracking music videos down the years. Which ones stick in your memory and why?

I’ll start with this one for pretty obvious reasons.

The Temptations are my favourite group of all time especially from the David Ruffin days.

But this song from the Tempts with Dennis Edwards as lead singer is a masterpiece.

Papa was a Rolling Stone.

Music videos were once a proper ‘event’ and were often given as much credence as the song, culminating in the high point of the mid/late 90’s to early 00’s. Unfortunately the changing musical landscape has made them if not redundant, then certainly less important.

Some of the very best were Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy, Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity, Massive Attack - Protection etc etc. Anything on late night MTV back in the day basically. If pressed for a favourite, would probably go with Star Guitar by the Chemical Brothers, just for the simplicity of the idea but how well it works. Directed by Michel Gondry, who did loads of amazing videos.

Ones that spring to mind without liking the song

Michael Jackson - Thriller
Madonna - LIke A Prayer
Duran Duran - Wild Boys
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer

A video I loved along with a brilliant song

New Order - True Faith

Massive Attack's video for Unfinished Sympathy - a one shot classic, 30 odd years before Adolescence came out.

The more laid back amongst us might want to try Ry Cooder doing a chilled studio take on "Prodigal Son."
