They didn’t concede from them last season either…… you know, to give a sense of balance.

He was better at the defensive side than the offensive side that's for sure! It got to the point last season where we might as well have thrown the keeper the ball and given them a goal kick instead of bothering with taking the corner. I've never known us look so impotent from set pieces.

New one already in or on his way?
Re: Set piece coach gone
Yeah, it's not just about attacking set pieces.
I thought we were really well organised, be a shame for him to go

Norwich scored from a corner, just to give a sense of balance.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 12:13 pmThey didn’t concede from them last season either…… you know, to give a sense of balance.

Re: Set piece coach gone
I don't care if our conceded column was minus 20. Nothing excuses the absolutely nonsensical utter non-threat we posed from all but a couple in a full seasons free kicks and corners.

We went several seasons without scoring from many set pieces under Dyche, despite our reputation for being a physical “traditional British” team. Dyche defended it on more than one occasion from memory.

Even without thinking I can remember goals from Keane, Wood and Vokes from corners/set pieces during the Dyche era.agreenwood wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 12:44 pmWe went several seasons without scoring from many set pieces under Dyche, despite our reputation for being a physical “traditional British” team. Re: Set piece coach gone
Yeah. He was our manager for 10 years and we had a few seasons where we scored a decent amount. We also had several seasons where we didn’t, to the extent that he was quizzed about it in press conferences and talked about how statistically unlikely scoring a goal from a corner was.
My point is that having seasons where we aren’t very good at scoring from set pieces isn’t a new phenomenon.

I've mentioned this previously but in what form of employment could doing 50% of one's role well be justified?

You can't be judged as successful if you only do it at one end of the pitch.

With Westwood, Wood, Tarks and Mee in the team, you needed neither a defensive or attacking set piece coach

It depends on what he was told to focus on. As the season went on it seemed to become much more about trying to stay defensively solid that trying to score at the other end.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 2:55 pmYou can't be judged as successful if you only do it at one end of the pitch.

Re: Set piece coach gone
I'd say that was down to the players taking the free kick/ corner.
I just fail to see the coach telling the players to make sure the ball doesn't even go over the first defenders head .

Re: Set piece coach gone
Given our lack of creativity for half a season I would have thought our offensive set pieces would have been a priority. Either or, lets hope we replace him with someone that can do both well.
Re: Set piece coach gone
Defensively brilliant as we were, when it comes to scoring, has there ever been a team as pitiful as we were at corners in the Championship last season?

I recall he started jumping off the bench to 'supervise' throw ins - which was pretty weird.
Some of our corners had an immense comedy value to them, was that his remit?

That soon disappeared when he started taking them

Re: Set piece coach gone
Never mind a set piece coach. What we need is a Westy/McNeil clone to take corners and a Mee/Tarky/O'Shea/Wood clone to head 'em in

I'd be curious what the players could come up with between them tbf. At risk of being reductive, surely any Premier League player should know how to attack / defend a set piece?dougcollins wrote: ↑Sun Jun 29, 2025 12:35 pmI'd save the wage, I'm sure we did better without one.

Re: Set piece coach gone
Movement off the ball, by our front men creates space that the set piece taker needs to utilise for our runners.
Start from there and you can create a dozen different routines. 3 or 4 would be good to start with.
Defensively, we did great, but still need to tighten it up, as opposition will punish any slackness. Can't rest on our laurels.

Jimmy Adamson used to get the maximum out of his teams at set pieces, before it was such a big thing.

We used to have some excellent free kick routines in the early 70's.
We won the Charity Shield at Maine Road with one.

I actually thought our thow-ins needed supervision last season. Dreadful. Although for balance they did get a bit better as the season went on.dougcollins wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 9:26 pmI recall he started jumping off the bench to 'supervise' throw ins - which was pretty weird.

I expect we’ll use them to slow the game down even more this season and probably take longer over them than a free kick!

Re: Set piece coach gone
This just about sums it up for me. Defensively we were very good at defending set pieces both in the second half of the Premier League season (I thought) and last year, but my word our corners and FKs (Flemming bangers aside) we’re a tough watch.
Interestingly, Walker mentioned in his interview the need to score from set pieces so hopefully that’s something Parker has already discussed with him.
