That gash on Tommy Hutchison's shin didn't look good but it was his own fault for not wearing shin pads.

Just a shame they never show old games covered by Match of the Day - our performance in the previous season at Coventry when we won 3-0 was as good as any.

Coventry have had some pretty decent teams and players down the years. Some good wingers too.

Thanks for posting the link CT. When i saw the title of the thread i hoped it was going to be the outstanding 3 - 0 win rather than the slightly fortunate win the following season. I remember the after game analysis showing it should not have been a free kick. What a difference in those two seasons, from being in second place for much of one season to relegation the next and what a long time to get back to the top flight.

As good an away performance as I think I've seen in my time watching us. Everton played Arsenal the same day and had Everton not won we'd have gone top of the league that day. A scintillating first half performance v Liverpool at home followed, the 2nd half nowhere near as good and a resulting 1-1 draw was the beginning of the end for our title ambitions that season.

Got beaten at in the last home match that season by Coventry. We were already relegated, but David Cross was superb: hatrick.

I can remember we were losing to Coventry in that last match of 1975-76 and I was heading for the exit at bottom of Beehole End as game was almost finished. I glanced back and saw David Cross complete his hat-trick with a header and then I immediately went down the steps little thinking that we would not return to the top division until 2009.

I was there and also thought that as a top side we would bounce back up.Not spending the years upto 2009 travelling to football desserts like Maidstone and Yeovil

David Cross used to sit with us at our reserve games a few years ago when we played them at Accrington, He was scouting but we never found out for which club.
