Yeah some interesting stuff in the bowels of the tower. Four big brick ovens as boilers for the heating, carpenter, french polisher, electrician's workshops all with their own apprentice station..... tunnels linking most of the other co-op buildings in the complex, including one of the old ballrooms (Used to be 3, the luftwaffe took one out, one became a server room for the tower, and the co-op New Century Hall is now a dolled up gig venue.
Most tunnels and links are probably bricked up now as the buildings get spun off for different uses.
Wow. I heard there were a series of tunnels but never seen them.
The 23rd and 24th floors with all the board rooms were a thing to behold - it was like going back in time. Very opulent and old fashioned. When the insurance merged with the bank the chief exec one year end purchased a £400k antique violin which was kept on the 24th floor. I was asked to sort out the transaction and it was all to do with saving tax on our profits that year !
Worst bit about working in that building and on the 23rd floor was the fire drills. You had to go down all the flights of stairs and your legs were burning (not literally!) towards the end.
When we first merged with the insurance their staff were on completely different contract and benefits. They all got free food - and we are talking real decent food. So they had to give that to the bank people initially before eventually phasing it out for everyone.

Haha yeah i remember about the grub. I started in 2006 so we were getting free lunch packs (sandwich, crisps apple etc) then the canteen re-opened as chargeable. Also had the mini Co-op shop in the basement too before that got replaced by the meeting rooms / auditorium thing that seemed underused.
The entrance to the bunker etc was just by there actually, you went through a door and had to mind your head as you walked down. They had the gym and several snooker tables on the upper accessible levels

Who said it was a secret ?!!
It's not in the public domain and you can't say what it is? That sounds like a secret to me. But if it's not a secret, what's the reason it can't be bulldozed? Put it into the public domain.

You’re beginning to sound a bit unhinged now !
If it was a secret I wouldn’t know would I ? And neither would the person who told me.
But I was told by someone working on the building now who knows the history of the building and i’m just taking the view that he told me in confidence.
If anyone was to research it enough I’m guessing they would find the reason.

I dare say you're confident in your own mind that "he told me in confidence so I can't tell you" and "He told me it was a secret so I can't tell you" are entirely different things. I don;'t see it, myself.
It's just intriguing. There is apparently a very interesting reason why the building can't be knocked down and you know what it is and aren't saying. I want to know what it is!

Can’t see it being a listed building as the reason it can’t be bulldozed.

I hope the owners aren't the same firm that owns the Adelphi or it'll be just left a vacant shell.

Well they must enjoy wasting money on the scaffolding which I believe is quite expensive.
