Half Time

Post by No Ney Never » Sun Jul 13, 2025 9:58 pm

What do you think are the pros and cons of extending the half time break? How long should the half time break be?

Not as long as tonight's Chelsea match anyway!

From what I read previously, this increases the risk of injury. Due to players cooling down for too long etc. unsure how much merit is in this. Having played in tournaments at amateur level that often ran over a full day, I do really recall any injuries at all in all the time I played (aside from impact injuries).

We have extended from the original 10 going even longer allows "experts" to talk even more bxxxxxxs at half time so definitely not welcome.

Whatever changes are made to the game, it will all be governed by TV, not player welfare.

15 mins is more than enough. Quick fag, can of red bull, quick tinkle, back out there.

10 minutes was great.
Back in the day a 7.30 evening kick-off ended at 9.10 which suited everyone - especially those who had to be at school the following day.
Of course we didn't have VAR and all the other various delaying tactics that we have today, so "added time" was usually minimal.

At half time extension might have a smokescreen of medical reasons for the players but the reason is for clubs to make more money from half time food and drinks sales.

I'd like to reduce it.

Why don't you put quarters in as well?

We will be having a 45 min half time and 5 min breaks after every 15 mins soon. It is coming. More adverts, more money. They want Americans to watch football for whatever reason, and the facts are without lots of adverts, breaks and half time shows American's aren’t interested. They are prepared to lose billions of viewers world wide if it means a few million Americans start watching.

Would you prefer to have a bit more time to get served, enjoy a drink and talk about the 1st half before returning to the stand for the 2nd half?

No. For a good part of the season, the weather is miserable, with freezing temperatures made worse by wind and rain. 10 minutes was fine. They still have that in Scotland.

Indeed. Lots of adverts and quarter time breaks. Probably fair enough since they don't like going for more than 25 minutes without eating.

You say that, but more likely is advertising during the match. Your audience isn't going anywhere during the match, unlike at breaks.

It was already in place for the club world cup

Split-screen (2-box video) ads during key in-game moments

They have adverts on Sky Germany during Bundesliga matches. The main image shrinks slightly and a banner comes round the outside

You say 10 minutes is fine, yet so many people leave their seat well before the half time whistle, why?

Presumably because they are more interested in half-time refreshments than watching the game.
Like the majority I'm there to watch the game and don't want to miss any of it.
I don't leave early either but I can understand why on occasions some do.

Do you think that if the duration of half time was longer than the current 15 minutes, those interested in half time refreshments wouldn't feel the need to leave their seat before the whistle?

It's only an opinion of course, but I'm pretty sure that the same people who are prepared to miss several minutes of the match in order to get to the front of the queue would do the same no matter how long the interval was.

We are already there. They shoehorned it in disguised as VAR!
