A balanced, reflective report - many thanks.
Presages a difficult, painful season ahead but keep the faith.

The speed of thought and action is the difference
The non marking on Richarlison and allowing Johnson to be unchallenged didnt help as did our poor attempts at goal

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Good report.
We all knew it would be tough, and so it proved against Spurs.
Fortunately, it's not the games against the likes of them and the other giants that will determine our season, but the games v the lesser lights, such as the other teams that came up, Brentford, West Ham (both of whom looked really poor) and a few others.
But we simply have to take advantage of our opportunities
when they present themselves.

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Thanks Tony. Sums up my thoughts. There were a few promising signs, but the big difference was that when they got into our penalty area they were clinical, when we got into theirs we weren’t. It’s obviously going to be a struggle to keep out of the bottom three, but we can start by beating Sunderland on Saturday.
On a different note, it was good to bump into three people I haven’t seen in years, Walton, Martin Bell and tybfc. Great to see you, lads, you’re all looking well.

Pleased you had a good day lakedistrict, I randomly thought of Martin Bell recently, hope he's well.
The key take away for me was that you have to get your shot off straight away in this league, Hannibal of course and Laurent in the first half had good opportunities to do this and trouble the keeper.
Decent enough display after a poor start to the game.

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Good heart and passion from the Clarets at Spurs.
We cannot afford poor passes in our defensive areas.
I would like to see us revert to a permanent back 4, as 3 at the back leaves us sooooo open and we're not good enough with that system. Walker was out outstanding player I thought.

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Totally agree. Esteve made that poor pass right in front t of us behind in the corner. Would probably have got away with that last season but not this one.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 18, 2025 9:01 amThe speed of thought and action is the difference

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Like a very bad stomache bug the problem was at both ends with 3 very poor goals to concede and not taking some clear chances.
However, we did look by far the better side for a period of the game and relatively comfortable for most of it, which sounds odd after losing 3-0.
Difficult to know how good Spurs are given their mid week match against PSG, changes and the fact that Richarlison will unlikely find himself unmarked in the box twice in one game.
I felt we would lose 1-0 because we wouldn't score so to lose by 3 in the manner we did was disappointing. On the flip side we also played a more expansive game than I thought we would and created more chances.
Let's hope once we get the new signings integrated some of the defensive errors disappear and we will get more potent up front.

We have had some really good spells v Lazio and Spurs without having everyone available. I think it's quite promising. The worry has to be scoring goals though.
0 v Lazio, 0 v Spurs, 0 v Huddersfield.

0 v Stoke, not Hudds.
Scoring goals is clearly the biggest challenge. No idea where they’re going to come from.

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
I think they mean Stoke.
Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Fair summary. We were not a million miles away, but got punished for the failings that we did have. And badly need to finish off chances or we are going to struggle at this level, we had the same issue in the pre season games. A lot is hanging on Broja to fix that

Re: REPORT: A harsh lesson on opening day
Our success or otherwise will depend on how quickly the players and manager learn and adjust.
I fancy we will see more adjustments than we did 2 seasons ago.
I too saw plenty of positives on Saturday.
